"An expert can pack 1U0 boxes in a day of ten hours. Sharp work, that, handling 72,000 pins a day." Clothespins are made in the lum ber regions. They are usually made oi white ash, sometimes of beach, black and white birch and maple. The wood is taken to the factory in logs and cut into lengths of 31 inches by circular saws. These lengths are then cut into blocks and the blocks again cut into sticks. The sticks are placed under another saw and cut into .the required lengths. Next the turn er takes a hand at them, and from there they go to the slotting ma chine. They are plaoed in troughs by the operator, the machino pick ing them up and slotting them. They are then placed in a revolv ing pipe-drier, going thence to tho polishing cylinder and thon to the packer. Each pin passes through eight hands. A single plant con sists of boird saw, gang splitter, gang chunker, turning lathe, dry ing house and polisher, and costs from $7000 to 12,000. Tho ma chines working are verv interes ting. The little blocks of wood 5 inches long are placed on an endless belt which feeds the blocks automarically into tho lathe. As the lathe is turned the pin is taken automatically from tho spindle and placed on a turntable and carried to a circular saw, which whittles out the slot end of the pin. It is then finished and thrown o ut of the turntable by the same appli ance that puts the bins on the ta ble. Falling they are caught, in a basket or barrel and are then tau en to the driving house for ten to twenty-four hours, or until dry. The polishing cylinder or rumbler holds twenty to forty bushels: this is run at a slow speed, about thirty turns a minute, and"Ty simple fric tion and contact they become pol ished. Gener el Wirt Adams; postmaster of this place, and John Martin, editor of the iVeio Mississippian, this after noon fought a street duel, and both men were killed. The general was hit in the head, and Martin was hit twice. Accounts of the tragedy are conflicting, and it cannot be said who fired the first shot. An article published this morning in the New Missis sippian was the immediate cause of the tragedy, though a breach hasl'jugexisted between the men. The Henrietta flour mills'' at Echo burned -yesterday morningabout 1 o'clock, completely destroying the mill and all the contents. The mill was built by J. H. Koontz, in 1886, at a cost, including fixtures, warehouses, etc., of $32,000. Thirty thousand bushels of wheat and a large quantity of flour and chop feed were also bnrned. Tho total loss is over '$60,000. The in suranco on tho mill was 23,000, divided between the Home Mutu al, the Oregon Fire & Marino and the State Investment Insurance companies. The fire is supposed to have originated from sparks from tho engine of the eastbound passenger train, which passed Echo about midnight. L. J. Ward, an employe of the mill, was asleep at tho timo of tho lire, and barely escaped being badly burned. The firo is a great loss to the whole community.
