A prominent Portland merchant
writes to a prominent Astoria mer
chant, suggesting that as freights are
as they are, it would be good policy
to buy in Portland. This rather gives
the business away and tends to con
firm the belief that Portland's inter
ests are made paramount in the fix
ing up of the present "protective tar
iff" of freight rates to and from San
Francisco.
The first Protestant house of wor
ship built on this coast is the one in
Oregon City, whioh has been used by
the Methodists for many years and
which is about to give place to a new
building. The subscription paper for
its building fund was dated Decem
ber, 1842. The Presbyterian ennrch
at Clatsop, of whioh the late Alva
Condit and wife, and Father Powers,
and our honored townsman Col. Jas.
Taylor, were founders, is believed to
be next on the list.

There is a case in Umatilla county
that'is attracting considerable atten
tion. The editor of the Long Creek
Eagle said something abont a man
named Williams that Williams didn't
like, and loading his little gun he
shot the editor. This made the ed
itor mad and he had Williams arrest
ed. The Long Creek Eagle man is
acting very unprofessional'' in thus
bothering courts and juries. He'd
ort to have a guardian appointed if
he can't take care of himself without
going into conrt with his little quar
rels.
From J. D. Kama, in charge nf the

est 3G on (he 9th. During the
month the prevailing direction of the
wind was southwest and of that use
ful article 3,920 miles blew by. The
highest velocity was 23 miles au hour.
There were no foggy days in April; 7

The Shasta Cala., Courier says:
Some of the Oregonians are bucking
pretty lively against the idea of
stocking the waters with catfish, and
they are sensible in doing so. The
catfish is a voracious spawneater, and
the streams which are the home of
the trout and salmon should be
guarded against the introduction of
fish so far inferior. Californians
have a right to use expletives against
the introduction of fish commission
ers who defiled her waters by the
planting of the big-monthed bull
pout, and they are the species which
the commissioners at Washington
send out for "catfish."
The Gen. Miles is off for Gray's
harbor with just about enough cargo
to serve for ballast and keep her
steady in the water. A lot of rot is
published about tue necessity for
more vessels, a steam schooner from
Portland, etc., when the cold facts are
that the Astoria service is adequate
and is hardly patronized sufficiently
to justify the attempt to make regu
lar trips. The Miles goes this time
with 100,000 cedar shingles for Aber
deen, and about twenty tons freight.
If she were more liberally patronized
it would be more incentive to effort
at keeping up regular trips than all
this growl from Gray's harbor about
necessity of steamer service. Pat
ronize the line now running sufficient
to make it an object to rnn regularly
before blowing so much about "rival
lines" and new competing steamers.
The Miles is sufficient for all the
traffio and goes and comes with as
much regularity as present business
requires.

A Warning.
The modes ot death a approach are
various, and statistics snow conolu
sively that more persons die from dis
eases of the Throat and Langs than
any other. It is probable that every
one, without'exception, receives vast
numbers of -Tubercle Germs into the
system and where these germs fall
upon suitable soil they .start into life
and develop, at first slowly and is
shown by a slight tickling sensation
in the throat and it allowed to con
tinue their ravages they extend to the
lnngs'producing Consumption and to
the head, causing Catarrh. Now all
this is dangerous and if allowed to
proceed will in time cause death. At
the onset you must act with prompt
ness; allowiug a cold to go without
your attention is dangerous and may
lose you your life. As soon as yon
feel that something is wreni: with
yonr Throat, Lungs or Nostrils, ob
