V" sv l-l-iilTW " To Leave The Oountry. The total depopulation of Ice land appears to be threatened. A scheme has been set afoot in Man itoba to transport thither the 75, 000 Icelanders still remaining in their native country, together with their flocks and herds. This would be an exodus as complete as was that of the children of Israel from Egypt. There has been a steady flow of Icelandic emigration to Canada for the last fifteen years, yet tho population is said to be still large for the resources ol the island. The wiping out of so interesting a people would be a matter o'f uni versal regret; but Iceland, although the conditions of life are hard, will doubtless continue to have attrac tions forra'.substantial "remant, es pecially when the supernuous.pop ulation" is drawn off. Such' at least is the opinion of the, St. James Budget. The Icelanders settled in Manitoba have grown so numer ous and prosperous that they are able to support several newspa pers printed in their own language. The colonies of Gimli, Thingvalla and New Iceland are in a most flourishinp- condition and are al ready sending offshoots into other parts of the Canadian northwest under the auspices of the Icelandic society. Much of the so-called ivory now in use is simply potato. A good, sound potato washed in diluted sulphuric acid, then boiled in the same dilution, und then slowly dried, is all ready to he turned in to buttons, poker chips and in numerable other things that ivory was used for once upon a time. Science is a big tiling. It made whisky from the potato long ago; now it comes np wih billiard bails and poker chips from the same old potato. The Atlanta Constitution has the following on the spring style of mertgages: "Mortgages are signed by two witnesses, the same as last year, and are folded so as to fit the side coat pocket. The back taxes are combed forward and parted on the side nearest the mortgage. In this climate mort gages generally mature in the win ter season." Bneklen's Amlcii Salvo.
