Annual Meeting. milE ANNUAL MEETING OF THE JL stockholders of the Astoria Bulldingand Loan Association will be held Tuesday, Jlay 8th,lS3S, from 2 P.M. until 8 P. m, for the purpose of electing directors for the ensu ing year. By order of the president. W L.P.OBB. Secretary. Tie On States THE CODFISH MDUSTBY. Codfishing is now the greatest industry in the shape of deep sea fishing: ever carried on by man. It is comparatively modern, and dates from the time ot tne mscov ery of America by Columbus, thoup-h some say that Breton and Basque fisherman had before that time made voyages to tne oanns of Newfoundland. As far as is know, there are only two great series of cod batiks in the world those of the Atlantic and those of the Pacific. The former, though by much the smaller, employ a great army of men belonging to many nations. The right of fish ing on these banks has been esteemed as much as that of the acquisition of so much territory, and they take a conspicuous place in many treaties between the great nations" of the world. The Atlan tic fisheries are said to employ 250, 000 men, the result of whose in dustry is an annual catch valued at one hundred millions of dollars. The total area of Atlantic fisheries does not exceed 70,000 square miles. Those of the Pacific, as tor as kuown, have an area of G80,000 square miles, or nearly ten times, those of the Atlantic. If, there fore, the fisheries of the Pacific were as industriously worked as arethose of the Atlantic, an im mense army of two and a half millions of men would be employed while the result of their labors would be equal in value to a thou sand million dollars yearly. No matter what may happen, the cod fishing never can fail, for as many as nine million eggs have been found in the roe of a single cod and the abundance of the fishing never fails. The discovery of. the codfishing banks of the Pacific was a pare accident. The Tilmandra, in 1SG.V, was becalmed in the sea of Okhotsk, when returning from a trading voyage to the Amoor river. Here her sailors fished for pastime and the result was a catch of 30 tons of cod; then the business was inaugurated. The catch was dried on Yerba Buena or Goat Island and sold at 14 cents per pound. This led to the fitting out of seven vessels in 1SG5, which , returned with 700 tons of fish. From this time on, till 1870, there waa a steady increase in the eaten and in the number of vessels. In that year, twenty-one vessels were employed and 1S50 tons wore caught. This was too much for the market, the result being that next year both the number of ves sels and the catch fell off nearly one-half. The year following, in 1812, it was worse, for only live vessels went out, while the catch did not exceed 470 tons. Next year there was a revival, but 1874 was almost as bad as 1872. Now, however, there was an increase again, aud year after year matters, improved, till IS 9 saw thirteen vessels out and the catch 2330 tons. This was I he largest yet. Again, how ever, there was a falling off, till 1SS1, when seven vessels caught l."i00 tons. The next two years witnessed a rapid revival and in 1SS3 sixteen vessels were employed while the catch was 2700 tons or 1,720,000 cod. In 18S1, seven teen vessels made a smaller catch. Since then, the catch declined un til last year only eight veols ware out and it was less than in 1S7S. Of the total catch, over onehalf was made at the Choumagin Is lands, where the water is shallower than in the Okhotsk sea, not ex ceeding forty fathoms, and being as low as twenty fathoms, the Okhotsk produces the next largest qualify and Behring's sea least of all, because it is not as accessible as the others. Of course the busi ness is yet in its infancy, but we may expect a great development of it in years to come. The Safest Medicine To have about the house at all times is Simmons Liver Regulator. Once there lived a man of honor in the balmy, days of old, who be lieved that right was better than a world of shining gold; through the sombre world he journeyed. i - ,-...- aoing gooa on every nana; widows blessed him, orphans loved him, and his fame spread through the land. Kindly words he ever ut tered to the weary and distressed, ever was his pocket open to the famished and distressed; never was he deaf to pleading, to the wailing voice of woe but the turf is heaped above him for he died long years ago. Once there was a humble brakeman, who was pleas ant and polite, with the bearing of a courtier and the graces of a knight; when he called the names of stations every one could under stand, for he did not howl the lan guage of some Asiatic land. He would answer all the questions that were asked him on the train, all the sights that were of interest he would cheerfully explain; he would beg the trav'ler's pardon if the train was running slow, but his beaming face is missing, for he died long years ago. Once there was a country lawyer in the silent, vanished years, who had never in his lifetime moved the jurymen to tears; neither eloquent nor able, calmly he, from day to day, moved along in peace, obscurely, in the tenor of his wa3'. He had never saved a villain from a fate that he deserved, from the strictest paths of duty he had ne'er two inches swerved; he had never caused a heartache in this weary world be low, but his office now is empty for he died some years ago. Once there was a famous singer who had never caught a cold, who would sing for love of in us ic, never for the love of gold. When they asked him if he'd warble he vould do as they desiVed, never making stale excuses when excuses weren't required. He would never speak unkindly of another singer's pow er, and he made the world about him like a gladsome summer bow er; shall we never other singers like this gentle singer know? "Would that he again were with us! But he died some years ago. Once there was a daily paper and the owner would admit that his circulation hadn't in a decade grown a bit; that it didn't hold a candle to the sheet across the way, and he often used to wonder that it lived from day to day. He'd advise the advertisers not to patronize his sheet, for it had no circulation in the mails or on the street; now he twangs a harp se renely where subscribers seldom go, for too good for earthly labors, ah he died Ion years aq;o. There have been, ala-,, o many, who have crowns upon il'oir brow, if they left behind defendants. where are those descendants now? In the eager rush for lucre, tliev are crowding side by side, full of strife and selfish longings, eager, wild ami evil-eyed; Inr the' say the world was better when our gray-haired sires were young, braketnen always did their duty, lawyeis worked and singers sung; would that we could all be wafted bsckward from these days of woe, to the time of which they tell ns, in the dusk of lon aro. Blasting Gelatine 92 parts of nitro-glycerinc and S of gun-cotton. It will be noticed that nearly all the above explosives are composed principally of nitro-glycerinc; aud it is probable that in most cases the other ingredients only act as absorbents of this liquid, and really add nothing to the explosive powder.
