Editor Asterian: The time is now at hand when it might be well to say something about the maintenance of the horses now in Rescue's engine house. They should be maintained out of the general taxes of the city. They are a valuable adjunct to the depart ment, and will greatly increase its efficiency. Property owners do not at present receive equal protection from fire. The two engines are as they should be iu the heart of the city where there is most danger. Yet property such as the Clatsop and West Shore mills and numerous canneries representing a great amount of capi tal while they pay the same rate of taxation upou their property for the support of the fire department do not receive equal protection. Distance is an element in the efficiency of the department and the time has come when this disadvantage should be overcome by means of horses. Tiie property on the outskirts of town de serve this. The city should either purchase another enginoand re-district their location or rote the funds necessary to keep up the present ar rangement Looking matters square in the face we must confess that sooner or later under the old organ ization of the department there will be a "big fire on the outskirts nnd much property destroyed, nil of which a few minutes of time in the arrival of an engine might have been pre vented. Dear Sir: I obtained your name by mere accident, and thinking you were in a position to handle some of my hardware, I have taken the liberty to write you, trusting yon will not bo tray the confidence I place in you. I have sent some of these articles through our banks and passed them on our most expert business men, nnd I tell yon, there has not been one com plaint. I am dealing with about eight people in the south and west, and they speak highly of the goods, and the best proof is that one partv in Colorado has used 814,000 in three months. I intend to sell to not more than two or three men in each state. Our alloy and metal is as fine as gold has the same weight and ring, and will stand any test ot the most power ful acids known to science. My part ner, 26 years in the different coining mints of Europe, and was employed 10 years in the California mint, and was discharged because he would not give his valuable secrets to the Gov ernment for a paltry sum, 815,000. Bear in mind, I ask no money in advance, not even if you were willing to send it, I want you to examine them and convince yourself, and if all is not as I tell you then, before God I will pay all your expenses to and from home, this I promise you on my oath. These are one hundred times safer than paper money, and as there is so much paper money sold in the country to-day it is dangerous to use it. Be guided by me and don't buy any from anyone offering to sell it to you. There are but few people in the United States or Canada handling my stock, and those whom I take in my confidence can rest assured ot certain safety, and make from S20.000 to 810,000 in six months. I will promise this on my Bolemn oath, and time will prove my words true. I will expect tho retnrn of this letter. It will prove you mean no harm. I will reply to no letter un less it is returned at once. The government cannot prosecute any person using them', unless they can prove they are base coins, which they cannot do. My terms are as fol fel fol eows: S500 will buy S12.000. 88G0 will buy 820,000. 81,200 will buy 833,000. I will expect my price in green backs, as I do not care for gold coin, as I can furnish an article just as fine and safe as the best gold coin in use, for, should you bring gold with you, some of it is liable to be my own man ufacture, as the case has often hap pened. A Warqins. The modes of death's approach are various, and statistics show conclu sively that more persons die from dis eases of tho Throat and Lungs than any other.
