pj lite Siuty gtftomn. ASTORIA. OREGON: FRIDAY. -ArHII. 27. 1888. ET TU, BRUTE! The prohibition state central com mittee has sent a challenge to Hon. Binger Hermann to divide time with Hon. G. M. Miller, in a canvass of the state We hope the Republican nom inee will not show the white feather that is, not until toward the end. Pacific Express. Thus sayeth the exponent of the Prohibition party in this state. On the third page of the same paper it indirectly announces itself as the champion of morality and reform. Morality and reform are needed ele ments, and if the Express can aid in the work, its services are gladly welcomed. But in a proper spirit of humility The Astorian ven tures to respectfully ask the Express if the above from its columns of the 26th inst, is to bo considered a sam ple? Ungodly and unregenerate peo ple are to be converted; tho duty of the Express is believed to be to aid in the conversion. Are sneers consid ered most efficacious? A sneer like the above extract quoted is believed to be unworthy of a high moral paper like the Express. A paper groveling in the low pool of party politics might be Euiltv of such contemptible prac tice as unjust misrepresentation, but an utterance from the serene and unini passioned heights of such "a high moral-toned family newspaper" should be devoid of an implication as unde served as it is unjust Whether Republican or Democrat, the place for Oregon's congressman during a congressional session is on the floor of the house. Tho people elect a congressman for that purpose. There are now and will be till after the June election measures pending that are of great importance to this state. The Oregon congressman's voice and vote nro needed just where he is. la doing what he is doing he is fill ing his duty to the best of his ability. And it ill becomes a newspaper, even the "high moral toned" Express, to sneer at him for doing what upon reflection it mnst see is his duty. There is nothing so cheap as a sneer and it is always worth its face value. If congressman Hermann were to come back here and electioneer in Oregon for a re-election, while the river and harbor bill, and other meas ures were pending in congress, he would deserve to be beaten. And if he were to come back and try to use his personal presence as a means of aid in his re-election, the Express would be the first one to jump him and point out what a bad, corrupt politician he was, to neglect his duties in a mad effort to be reelected. It ihe Express wants to help elect Mr. Gearin to succeed Mr. Hermann it has a perfect right to do so. If it wants to aid Pref: Miller, n most worthy gentleman, in his canvass, the right is conceded. But it should be willing to con cede to others the same meed of sin cerity it claims for itself. Such contemptible flings as the ex ample we place at the head of this article are unworthy of the Exprets and its avowed mission. This is not a question of party. It is one of justice, of manliness, of truth. Surely the moral perceptions of the editor of our esteemed contemporary are not already so blunted by contact with the carnal minds of bad political newspaper men as to be incapable of perceiving this! The demand for the division of Dakota, admitting the south half into the Union as a state and leaving the north half in a territorial condition for the present, is based upon the fact that it is too big for ono state. The area of tho present territory of Da kota is as large as all of the New En gland states and the states of New York and New Jersey combined, and tho south half, which it is proposed to admit as a state, now has a larger population than any new state ever had before on being admitted. i A fusver named Lathrop and his wife and three children were driven from their home on the banks of the Wolf river in northern Wisconsin Thursday night by an overflow of the river, and trusted themselves to a hastily constructed plank raft, which the current tore to pieces and the whole family was drowned. The farmers on the border of Kansas, Texas and Indian territory have nearly exterminated a desperate gang of horsethieves in that section. The farmers organized and sought the thieves. Finding them in a deeD ra vine a battle commenced, which ended in the lulling of all the gang but three. New York is trying to get up a centennial celebration on April 30, 1889, of Washington's first inaugura tion there as president, but it Ls not yet known whether the rest of the country will contribute enough money to make it a success. All the railroads between Chicago and the Missouri river have aureed to drop freight rates between all points east of the Missouri river 30 per cent SOME QUESTIONS ANSWERED. The spring immigration from Eu rope has opened upon a scale that leads to the opinion that the rush to our shores this year will be unparal leled. Every ship that reaches our port is crowded from stem to stem, and Castle Garden is constantly swarming with the hopeful myriads who have come here to improve their condition in life. Last year the arri vals there reached the enormous ag gregate of 450,845, or 83,591 more than in the preceding year, and the officials have computed that this year's immi gration will be over half a million. A large proportion of the whole are al ways bound for the northwestern states, which still offer them cheap land and welcome. But several states of the southwest, especially Missis sippi, Arkansas and Texas, are also offering inducements which are sure to give them a share of the new-comers who will aid in the developing of their abounding resources. The total number of bills and resolutions introduced in the senate and house up to this date is 12,568, exceeding by more than 2,000 the number presented in the first 100 days of the last congress.
