BUENED ALIVE.
The Horrible Death of Benjanun Sellers.
A man came rushing into Dr.
Fisher's drug store last Monday af
ternoon with the news that Ben
jamin Sellers, an old man em
ployed by the doctor on his ranch
just below town, had been burned
alive, ine doctor, anving uown
to the ranch, found Mr. Sellers
still alive and suffering fearful ag
ony, it seems mai oenera was
employed in burning out stumps
on the place. The usual manner
of doing this is to bore a perpen
dicular hole down into the stump
and then to bore another horizon
tally to meet it. Fire is placed in
the horizontal cavity and the per
pendicular hole acts as a chimney
flue, creating a draft. In this
manner a stump may bo largely
consumed. It appears in this caso
that the fire did not burn actively
enough to suit Mr. Sellers and he
sought to hasten it by pouring
coal oil into the hole. This is
also frequently done, but the oil is
usually poured from an open ves
sel. Sellers, however, used a can
on which the top was tightly
screwed. The flame leaped up
and firing the accumulated gas in
the can the usual explosion fol
lowed, covering the old man with
burningoil. Every stitch of cloth
ing on his back and eyen the hair
on his head was burned to ashes.
No one happened to bo near at
the time of the explosion, but a,
man working at a little distance
heard the explosion and tlio old
man's streams and ran to his as
sistance, but before he could reach
the unfortunate man poor Sollers'
clothes were burned entirely off.
The skin dropped from his body
and limbs in great strips. After
everything possible had been douo
to relieve his suffering, he was
placed upon his bed and taken to
ist. Vincent's hospital where he
died in great agony about mid
night. But little is known of Mr. Sell
ers. An old testament in winch a
letter was found is about the only
elue. Ho was born in iNova bco
tia and was about G3 years of ago.
It was always supposed he had
neither kith nor kin, but the letter
would seem to indicate that he
once had a married daughter iti
Massachubetts. Tbo letter is dated
"Worcester, Mass., Dec. 9, lb7G,"
and is addressed to "Dear Father."
The daughter goes on to express
her desire of coming to the Pacific
coast, speaks of her husband and
son, and signs herself "Jennie
Reed." Albino. Courier, 21.
The Upper Columbia.
The Columbia has begun to rUe
at the Cascades and is coming up
about a foot a day. Fishermen
there are begining to get their
wheels in order and the fishermen
who use dip nets are getting ready
their littlo platforms along the
bluffs at the upper Cascades. Some
blue-black salmon have been
caught in seines, and in a short
time if the warm weather contin
ues the wheels and dip nets will
be going merrily and the little
blue-backs will be thick as spaltor,
in the market. It is probable that
now the. chinook salmon finding
the snow water pouring dowu will
turn their noses up the Columbia
instead of turning, off into the
Willamette as the majority of
them appear to have been doing
so tar tins season,
The shipments of salmon from
Oregon City and the Clackamas
have been unusuallv lanre this
spring and daily large lots of fish
brought from them have been
shipped east from this city. The
eastern people are getting to be
large consumers of Oregon salmon
both fresh and canned. From one
to four car loads of canned salmon
are received here on the Astoria
boats for shipmeut east. A fow
years since about all the canned
salmon was shipped to England,
bnt it now looks as if our eastern
cousins were bound to share the
products of the Columbia with
John Bull. Telegram.

How the Northwest was Saved.
Oregon and Washington territory
are bound to the Union by iron
bands. -More than forty years ago
a statesman came near tradine them
off to Great Britain. The foresight
of a home missionary, Dr. Marcus
Whitman, saved them to the na
tion. Dr. Whitman had crossed the
plains and the mountains to Oregon,
and knew, from a few years' resi
dence, the value of the country.
He also knew that the Hudson bay
company were anxious to obtain
possession of the whole northwest,
and had circulated the report that
it was impossible for emigrants to
cross the mountains in wagons.
At a dinner given in 1S42, where
the doctor and several of the com
pany's chief officers were present,
news was received that a band of
British emigrants had crossed the
mountains. Toasts were drank
in honor of the event. "Now the
Americans may whistle; the coun
try is ours," said one of the Eng
lishmen boastingly.
"God helping me tho country
is not yours:" said the dootor to
himself as ho left the table. The
next day he started for Washing
ton on horseback. He made tho
journey in winter, and with frozen
hmb3 called on Daniel Webster,
the secretary of state. On present
ing his case, he was bluffly told
by Mr. Webster that the country
was worthless.
"Wagons cannot cross tho moun
tains," said the secretary. "'Sir
George Simpson, who is here,
affirms that. I am about trading
that worthless region for some
valuable concessions in relation to
the Newfoundland fisheries."
Finding that a treaty had been ap
proved by the senate, and was
awaiting formal ratification and
the signature of president Tyler,
Dr. Whitman sought the president.
Alter listening to his story, air.
Tyler, said:
Dr. Whitman, your frozen lim!)s
and leather breeches attest your
sincerity. Can you take emigrants
across the mountains in wagous?"
"Give me six months and I will
ke 1000 emigrants across," ans
wered tho doctor.
"Well" replied the president, "If
you take them across, the treaty
shall not be ratified."
"In 1S43, a baud of immigrants
under the guidance of the doctor,
started from Missouri to Oregon,
A deputation from the Hudson
bay company met them on the
plains, who affirmed that it was
impossible to cross the mountains
with the wagons. The emigrants
almost decided to leave their
wagons and finish the journey on
horseback.
An this course would have
ruined Dr. Whitman's plan of sav
ing Oregon to tho United States,
he labored with the leaders of the
land until thoy consented to follow
the doctor's advice and guidance.
The band did cross the moun
tains in their wagons; tho treaty
was not ratified, aud the fertile
northwest was saved to tho nation.

Saturday the O. R. & N., Short
Line .and Union Pacific made a
rate of 40 cents a hundred on lum
ber from Portland to Denver, a re
duction of 15'cents from the old
rate. Heretofore tho rate of 55
cents has been considered very
reasonable, indeed, aud tho mills
of this state have sent largo quan
ties to Denver, Kansas City and
Omaha. It happens that Denver
is the largest and most profitable
market that Oregon has east of tho
Cascades,) and foe a. while it looked
as if Portland would bo shut out.
Completion of the Denver, Tex
as & Gulf railroad about three
weeks ago gave Texas lumber a
market in Denver. The rate in
principal towns in tho Lono Star
state to Denver is 35-cents a hun
dred. With the disadvantage of
twenty cents a r hundred against
them, Portland could not get into
Denver, but the superiority ot Or
egon lumber over the Texas pro
duct equalizes the present differ
ence of five cents in favor of Tex

Queer Fits and Starts.
The fits and starts using these- words in
their literal meaning of the nervous people
often strike the beholder as ludicrous. The
nerves of hearing of such unfortunates aro
painfully acute, and Impigned by abrupt un-exp-cteil
nnlsm. lead them sometimes toper
form antics worthy of a Juu.;i!ng-Jack. At
tho root of nervousness, inmost Instances,
Is non- assimilation of the food, aud conse
quently Innutrition of the nerves as of the
other tissues of the body. This prolonged,
of course, productive of serious nervous dis
ease. The remedy is Eostetter's Stomach
Bitters, that Invigorate the stomach and en
ables It to perform Its functions properlv.
Soon after commencing a course ot it, it will
be found that the nerves grow more tran
quil by day, nightly repose become less in
terrupted, and appetite more vigorous and
satisfying. These aro tho Initial Indications,
followed by the complete restoration of ner
vous vigor. The Bitters also euro fever and
aguo. liver complaint and constipation.
