ASTORIA. OREGON:
SATUKDAY.
riUL 14. 18i8
The Emperor "William during his
lite-time saw disappear from the scene
six popes, eight emperors, fifty-two
kings, six sultans and twenty-one
presidents. Four ot thepe are still
alive, but the remaining eighty-nine
are dead.
A trust is a conspiracy to "comer"'
the neccessaries of life and to increase
the cost to consumers. No trusts are
formed in high-price champagnes, in
diamonds or in silk worth 83 a yard.
The trusts are created to take advant
age of the poor.
Oxe of the most astonishing delu
sions that are recorded in the world's
history is that which really prevails
to some extent in this country to the
effect that over S100,000,000 of super
fluous taxation may be raised and the
people not feel the burden of it
Nothing could possibly be more irra
tional, unless it be the companion as
sumption that taxation is a benefit to
a nation.
On the outside page is a thoughtful
letter on the great value of the tim
ber region to tne southeast, that is
commended to the attention of our
readers, as illustrative of what prom
ise the future holds in store. How
near that future may be made depends
largely upon Astoria. Astoria has
shown its ability to raise a $150,000
subsidy. God aids thoso who aid
themselves. In the meantime, the
way to do a thing is to do it

Col. S. W. Blasdell, an old time Ne
vadan, and of late years prominent in
the business and politics of this state,
was in the Republican state conven
tion this week, from Baker county.
CoL Blasdell is enthusiastic about
Baker county and eastern Oregon.
He and his associates have proved
their faith by investing 8300,000 in
mines in that vicinity and are devel
oping that section. CoL Blasdell will
be remembered by many Astorians,
he having successfully negotiated the
placing of the electric light system by
ex-Mayor Trullinger in this city. He
is a shrewd business man and an act
ive man in party councils, being al
ways in the front rank. It is not im
probable that he will be heard from
politically in the near future.

NOTICE TO MARINERS.
This office is in receipt of advanced
sheets of the latest publication of
the coast and geodetio survey, giv
ing notice to mariners of chart cor

relating to this coast is that of the
discovery at tho mouth of Coquille
river, of a daneerons sunken rock.
It has been reported as lying about
2.2 miles W. N. V. , W. from Tup
per's Rock. This discovery affects
coast survey chart No. 602.
The coast survey has suspended
the publication of chart C3G relating

Tho spelling adopted by the survey
for C003 Bay is Koos Bay.
Superintendent KM. Thorn of the
coast survey gives notice that a new
catalogue of charts and other publi
cations of the coast and geodetic
survey will be ready for distribution
about April 20tb, and will be sent free
on application.
The coast survey charts are cor
rected for all important inform Jtion
received at office to date of issue. To
assist users of charts in keeping np
to date, corrections to be applied are
published monthly in "Notice to Mar
iners." These can be obtained free
of charce. on aDDlication. from the
agents of tho survey. Pilots and
masters of vessels vie earnestly re
quested to send information of dan
gers, changes in aids to navigation,
notices of new shoals and channels,
facts of interest to mariners, and sug
gestions for increasing the usefulness
of charts, to the "Superintendent
of Coast and Geodetic Survey, Wash
ington, D. C."
A limited 'number of index maps,
indicating the outlines of C. and G.
S. charts, will be sent from Washing
ton free ot charge to any adress,
These maps for the Pacific coast are:
