The favorite'.dress of the. United States senator is a black broadcloth double breasted frock coat, high standing collar open at the neck, and boots. Business suits are, however, fast creeping in, and now about one third of the senators wear cut-awny coats. A Georgia negro, having hurl his leg, treated the wound with mud from the Ocala swamp, and found when he removed the bandage that the wound was healed and that the leg had turned almost white. The result is that the negroes of the vicinity are flocking to tho swamp and covering themselves with the mud, hoping that it will turn them white. The following, according to tho London Slavtlird, is a boy's compo sition about "Clumbus": '-Clnmbus was a man v. ho could make an egg stand on end without breaking it. Tho king or Spain said to Clumbus: 'Can you discover America?' 'Yes,' said Clumbu", 'if you will give mo a ship.' So he got a fchip and sailed over the sea in the direction where he thought America ought to be found. Tho sailors quarreled, and said they believed there was no such place. But after many days the pilot came to him and said; 'Clumbus, I seo land.' 'Then, that is America,' said Clumbus "When the ship got near, tho land was full of black men. Clumbus said: 'Is this America'' 'Yes. it is', said they. Then the chief said: 'I suppose yon are Clumbusr' 'Ton are right,' said lie. Then tho chief turned to his men and said 'There is no help for it; wo are dis covered at last' " Home Again. Secretary of state Goo. TV. McBride, aud his private secretary, Ed. A Heavy Blow at the Silver Miner. Washington. AnrilS. Representa tive Woodburn of Nevada says that ono of tho moat important objections to the Mills tarili bill seems to have been overlooked, even by the oppo nents of that measure. It is proposed to reduce the duty on lead from S-0 to 810 per ton. Woodburn says if this reduction should go into effect it would mean the shutting down of scores of silver mines in Nevada, Colorado and Montana, Idaho, Ari zona and Washington territories. The value of lead in low-grade silver ores now pays, uuder a protective tariff, tho cost of mining. It this pro tection is reduced one-half the mining of these ores will bo no longer profi table, and the mines must shut down. St. John anil Miller at Kujene. Euoexu City, Or., April 11.
