THE LATEST 00AL PIND. riattering Reports from Green Moun tain, Washington Oonntj. Hillsboeo, April 10. Since notifying you of the find of stone coal near Green mountain, on the head waters of Dairy creek, above the old Quick mill, Mr. S. J. Raffety says that the whole of Long mountain seems to bo large ly composed of coal, as it crops out and can be easily traced on both sides of the mountain. The lurgest prospect yet found is where it crops out on the north side in a canyon tributary of Peb ble creek, near the old Meacham road, croppings show a surface of hve feet deep and loo broad. Of course the water prohibited the digging down to see how deep the ledge does go. Persons claiming to be experts declare the coal to be first class, and from overy indi cation, taking the miles of out- croppings, there can be no ques tion of quantity. Settlers living in the vicinity say that u railroad running up by the old Quick mill would have as level a country to cross as anywhere out on the plain?, and only two and a-half miles of mountains to cross that would'give any trouble, and none of this any worse than the road on the west side coming out from Portland; that a detour of one and a quarter miles around the end of Long mountain would give nn easy grade, and that the whole route presents no obstacles worse than trees, brush and logs, the surface of the route being good, but looks terrific on account of these last named obstacles. Settlers aro fast taking up this mountain coun try, until now there is almost a continuous settlement from the plains to Pebble creek and the Ne haleni river valley. A railroad lrom JinisDoro run ning to Astoria could be built as cheaply as the same number of miles of road en the O. O. R. R. west side from Portland out, and would pay more clear profit. The immense coal deposits and mag nificent timber interests are equal to any on the Sound or any other place, while these commodities could find shipment at Astora for California and other ports; while Portland would be the central de pot for the whole eastern market; while the quantity of wheat shipped to Astoria to load and fin ish loading would bo as largo as the amount shipped to Portland, and the Portland road would gain by the amount of coal and lum ber sent to Portland for the east of the mountains trade. Cars loaded with coal or lumber at the mills or coal mines, with the com pletion of the railroad bridge at Portland, would not have to be unloaded until they reach their destination, if it was across the continent.
