Loggera and Mills.
Seattle, March 17. There is
good authority for the report that
all Uio logging camps on 1uget
sound will shut down in ton days
or two weeks, in order to meet
the action of Paget sound mill
owners, who met in San Francisco
and formed a society known as
the Puget sound brokerage asso
ciation, tho object of which was to
regulate the price of logs on Puget
sound. The movement was kept
very quiet for a long time, but the
truth coinmpnced to crop out, so
that its methods were beginning
to be felt, and the loggers, as a
matter of self-preservation, have
organized to protect themselves.
All the logging camps Will be shut
down till the loggers can erect
three or four mills of their own.
A prominent logger, replying
to a reporter's inquiry as to how
the brokerage association regulates
the price of logs sail: "I'll tell
you how it is done. In the Grst
place, the members of the compact
have agreed not to bid against
each other for logs. I will give
you an illustratien: Suppose I
have a boom of logs ready for the
market, and go to the mill where
I had been accustomed to sell
my timber. The manager would
say, 'Ihose logs look very well
and T will give you G per thou
sand. Unless I should acrept
that otter immediately the pnoi 1
had been offered wonld bo tele
graphed to every other mill on
tne sound ana the compact re
quires that no othermill shall otter
within 25 cents per 1000 as much
as the first man offered for the logs.
If this were carried out, the price
of loss would co away- down and
the price of lumber away up."
A combination of loggers has
been talked of for some time. A
meeting of loggers will be held
in Seattle on Wednesday, to per
fect organization. Loggers claim
they are in a differant position now
than they were ten years ago,
when they were virtually owned
by the mill companies.
