Well, gentlemen of the council, a large and cheerful constituency want to know what are you going to do about the roadway? Elsewhere is published a notice given by request of a number of Col umbia river cannerymon. The close season begins to-day and extends through the month. The Yamhill county ns3essmeut roll has at last been filed with the secre tary of state, who has forwarded blank assessment rolls for '88, to the different county clerks. There cleared foreign last month, from the Columbia; sixteen vessels, carrying 772,302 bushels wheat, worth 8561,756, and 72,408 bbls. flour, worth 3253,630; a total of S815.386. Secretary Reed, of the Astoria Land and Building Association hears from desiring investors as far away as Deadwood, Dakota, wanting to put some money in Astoria real estate. The treasury department ha3 jus tified the action of the collector of customs at Port Townsend in admit ting without the production of con sular invoice canned salmon for im mediate exportation. It is understood that, purely in the interests of economy, the city council will, at its next session, have laid be fore it a resolution, introduced by its most economical member, instructing the council to advertise for proposals to kill dogs. The current price is or was 82 a dog some dogs. There is nn effort in Portland to have the time of the next firemen's tournament changed from June, the date the board of directors set it, to September. September would suit our boys just as well, but whether it be June or September, or the 4th of July, they will be up and dressed when the time comes. Deep River that saved the lives of all who reached shore in safety. Had that boat not been there, not one would have escaped. There was a 8200 net in the boat at the time, which was flung overboard to make room for the survivors. It 13 under stood that the owner of that net, who isa poor man, has not been paid for his property. If so, such injustice should not continue, and it is very probable that if the attention of those whose lives were saved by that boats' presence is directed to the matter, they will certainly chip in and replace the man's net, being actuated by the ordinary feelings of gratitude toward a preserver. Briscoe of Oysterville, was in the city yesterday, lie esti mates his loss by Monday's fire at 8600, and thinks it was undoubtedly of incendiary origin, it being the cul mination ot a series of assaults upon his property. Typhoid Fever. Referring to the typhoid fevor in the vicinity of the Clatsop mill, and the water supply of the families there about, W. W. Parker, in n communi cation, says: "There havo been only four cases of so-called typhoid fever in that vi cinity, comprising over one hundred people. "The water used by tho persons who have been sick does not flow from a spring, but comes down a steep hillside ravine or gully, enough of it to run a water saw mill during all the time they were sick and for more than n month pre ceding the first sickness. Among ten families in the five houses where they were sick, there is only one tank and that is in the Chinese wash house, used exclusively by the Chinese, and fed by a pipe from tho hillside brook. All the five houses are supplied with water by iron pipes taken from the same brook, from a cask in it, up the hill five hundred feet from the beach and over a hundred feet above any house in that settlement. He Spoiled Their Fan. At 10 o'clock this morning E. C. Holden will sell at his auction rooms, to the highest bidder without reserve under chattel mortgage, the furni ture of tho Astoria Bakery, consist ing of show cases, candy jara, count ers and counter scales, wardrobe, kitchen cupboard, cooking stove and a large lot ot sundries. There are four or five residents of the Second ward who have not yet been nominated to fill the vacancy in the council from that ward, and in justice to those gentlemen, they should be given the compliment of a nomination. In the meantime the great question remains unselved: "Is three a majority of six?" This seems to be the era of fool naDers. and the biggest fool paper re ceived for a long time is The Big Sandy, printed at Chntwood, Va. It has a funny idea ot news, and runs the Lord's Prayer, the Ten Command ments, and the Apostle's Creed in its local column. Probably all these, however, are news to its proprietors. The duty on the railroad iron in the hold of the Martha Fisher ag crecates 317.723. The duty is S16 a ton. Railroad iron is now sold in this country for 828 a ton. It used to be 3120, but since American railroad iron mills have been "protected", tho price has dropped to S28 and even lower. The men who bnild railroads are not kicking. J. A. Thompson, a writer of power ful prohibition editorials in this city, last fall, is wanted in Tacoma on a charge of forging the name of Mike DeYoung; ot the Chronicle for S10. Woolley, the electri cian of this city, was dining in the Superior house in Cleveland and it so happened that the only other occu pants of tho table with him were a bevy of lady telegraph operators. Mr. Woolley has been very successful in his business and is able to gratify a strong penchant that he has for dia monds, and he generally wears ono or two of startling proportions. He is also an expert telegraph operator. As soon as they were seated, one of the young ladies began to size him up; then placing her knife-blade between the tines of her fork, she imitated a telegraph sounder and telegranhe a to her companiens: "Uet onto his nobs with the bie diamond." Woolley caught on at once, nnd as soon as all the girls had turned their attention to mm, be, 111 the same man ner, telegraphed: "Ah, there! Are you all on?" The St Louis, Arkansas & Texas express train was robbed at Kingsland, Arkansas, early this morning. The express messen ger locked the doors, but the robbers smashed them in and secured two thousand dollars. Later dispatches give further de tails. At one o'clock this morning, when tho north-bound express train was about a mile from Kingsland, the train suddenly came to a stand-still and the conductor stepped to the door to see what was wrong. As ho opened the door a bullet whistled by his head and ho at once returned in side the car where he remained dur ing the trouble. The robbers went to work in a cool, determined, system atic way. They boarded the engine and commanded the engineer and fireman to get down from the box. Taking the fireman and engineer with them tho robbers ordered them to call on the messenger to open the car. They did as ordered, but he refused to show up. Then began a fusilade from their guns, which lasted while attempts were being made to force their way into the car. The fireman was told to take a slash bar from the engine and break open tho doorof the car. He obeyed, but as he could not get in, after a few minutes' delay, tho robbers proceeded to set the car on fire. This forced the messenger to open the door and tho engineer and fireman were made ta get in first, thus protecting the robbers as they climbed in. Tho messenger opened the safe without any further trouble, and the contents were quickly trans ferred to the robbers' sack. The exact amonnt secured is not known, though late reports state that between 85,000 and S10.000 were taken. Some place tho loss much higher. The sheriff and posse are in pursuit of tho robbers. Tho passengers and mail car were not molested. TO BE niXQED APBID 13TH. Los Angeles, Feb. 20. Pittsburg, Feb. 29. The Knights of Labor and the engineers ot the Reading railroad have clearly out lined their policy, according to an in terview with one of the engineers this afternoon. They will not take tho places ot the Burlington strikers and will promise ohief Arthur, of the BrotherhoodofLocomotiveeugineers, to return to their homes, if he calh his engineers off the Reading and Brooklyn roads. Five carloads of engineers nnd firemen passed through tho city this morning en route to Chicago. There were 200 in ono party and they wore nearly all Knights of .Labor and. mostly former employes of the Read ing railroad. A CLOSE SQUEEZE. New Yore, Feb. 29. It is under stood on excellont authority that the grand jury decided yesterday by a vole ot 18 to 5 to find no indictment against Jay Gould and Russell Sage. The merits of tho case and the question of tho guilt or innocence of Gould and Sage were not considered. Tho question was simply a point whether or not the prosecution was debarred by the lapso of tho year. corcoran's will. Washington, Feb, 2S. The will -.f the late Wm.
