H9I B SUPEEIOS SHINGLES The Mississippi Valley Lum berman says: "borne of the Wash ington Territory manufacturers have recently placed representives in this and the Uhicazo markot, who are enrraffed in laying partic ular stress upon tho merits of Puget Sound codar. shingles. These are undoubtedly of a very superior quality, and under the .prevailing 60 cent rate the 18-inch butt, Iso. 1 sbmele, is being laid down in Chicago, Kansas City, St. Paul and Minneapolis for $3.35 to $3.50 a thousand. Under the pe culiar conditions prevailing in the shingle market this season it is altogether probable that the west ern manufactuaers of cedar shin gles will bo able to introduce a good many of their goods. A wager was laid recently that 13 inch white pine shingles would sell as high as $5 in Michigan be fore May, and it is stated in proof of the confidence in this figure, that from the Straits of Mackinaw to Port Huron on the Michigan Huron shore, there were only 193 000 shingles on hand at the close of the season, and thero were less that 1,000,000 in the Saginaw val ley, and those were all disposed of. The figures printed in the Lumberman two weeks ago show ed that in the territory covered Minnesota, the Mississippi valley and Western Wisconsin the stock of shingles was found to be 70,000,000 less than it was a year ago, and the shortage in other lo calities is even more marked. Under these circumstances an ad vance in price?, temporarily at least, need not be unexpected, which will admit of the Oregon and Washington Territory shingle makers' selling their goods in the eastern markets. But the cedar shingle is a much better shingle, as a rule, than the white pine shingle, though buyers are slow to appreciate this fact, and prefer to pay the lower price generally pre vailing for the white pine shingle. The cedar shingle is making con stant head way, however, and it is not too much to expect that the very superior article made by the Oregon and Washington Territory manufacturers will find a perma nent place in all tho eastern mar kets. The shingles are so tig'1 that the sixty per cent, rate ':t- -not add rapidly to the cost of t goirds, and therefore iheau.it;: ui the western mill men to get their first productions through this med ium to the eastern dealers. The lingo so fashionable nowa days that steam has driven senti ment and humanity off the ocean has been triumphantly refuted by the events of the past year. The life boat, the pilot boat, the sail vessel and the steamer, the masters and crews of each actuated by the sacred desire to aid tliBir fellow men in distress have made a glo rious record during the year past. Those who perished in that endeav or are worthy of immortality, and thoso who unselfishly gave their labor, time and means, without hope oE reward, will hereafter bo regarded as heroes. All honor to them, living or dead! John Ek went into a grocery at Rib Lake, Wis., the other day, with the tips of his fingers frozen, and the proprietor advised him to thaw out his fingers by holding his hands in an open barrel of kero sene which stood just outside the door. Ek did so, and when he withdrew his bands a few moments later found that thev were frozen soldid. As a to'let luxury, Ayer's Hair Vigor cannot ber equaled. It is highly perfumed, and keeps the icalp dean and cool. Good News Por England Englishmen have a peculiar in terest in tho results of the great Democratic conference which has just concluded in Pennsylvania. Had Randall's party triumphed, the policy of president Cleveland, as regards tariff, would have been upset: first, because it would have stood condemned at the first Dem ocratic convention held after its announcement; and, second, be cause tho Democrats of congress, whose word makes the president's propositions law or overthrows them, would have been divided in opinion, and failed to carry a tar iff reduction. Mr. Ran'dall if the American papers to hand this morning be correct, has left no stone unturned to defeat a free trade policy; he has made all sorts of propositions, some of them in volving extravagant expenditure of the public money, in order to do away with the reduction of cus toms duties. Ho has, it is solemn ly asserted, intrigued with the friends of president Cleveland to overthrow him, and even won over to his side governor Hill, of New York state, an old friend of Mr. Cleveland. But the Democratic confeaenco has resulted in his ut ter defeat, and it is now seen that the party has resolved to support the reduction of the tariff. This is good news for England, for it means an increased wool, iron and steel trade. More than that, it is the beginning of an enlightened policy which will be of great value to both nations. The Pennsylva nia Democrats have inaugurated an enlightened and beneficial pol icy. London Echo.
