While at Chewala recently, says a correspondent of the Birming ham JTerald, I metNancy McKen zie, a noted half-breed woman, who i9 known throughout the far northwest from Montana to Puget sound. She is a large-framed, tall woman, about GO years of age, who takes more after her Indian mother than her Scotch father, who was an enlisted man m tho service of the Hudson Bay company, left his homo in the Orkney islands about seventy-five years ago, and sought wealth and adventure in tho un trodden and unknown regions of the northwest. Nancy grew to womanhood under his tutelage and around his camp fire, following him in his migrations from tho buffalo-hunting grounds of Montana to the salmon creeks that empty their waters into tho great Colum bia and to ruget sound, where the wandering tribes of savages would congregate at certain seasons to enjoy a time of indolenco and mirth living on the water fowl with which tho inlets of the Sound abounded, the salt water fish that could almost bo had for the pick ing up, and tho clams that were then and are still to be found in ureat shoals on every sand beach. In her younger days she must doubtless have been a model for the sculptor in physical develop ment, for though aged and wrin kled, she is still nearly six feet in height and straight as the t3-pical Indian, with strong and deeply penciled features. I was told a little story concern ing her by a physician who lives near by. He said that a few days before he was out in tho swamp back of his house hunting pheas ants, when he heard the sharp crack of a rifle near at hand. Thinking it was one of his neigJiltor3 who had scared up a deer in theswamp he hastened to tho spot, and found Nancy McKenzie with a smoking gun m hand peering townrd tho roots of an upturned fir trep. On asking her what sl.o had shot she replied in French for she only speaks Indian and French that she had shot a bear standing against tho root of the tree, atri was not certain whether or not s!k had killed him. The doctor a mittcd that his knees smote toi tit or a little when ho looked in the direction indicated and saw acrcit sliriggy object rolling about on the ground. Nancy said she was out of ammunition and asked him to give bruin a parting shot. Tho doctor was a frank man and he again admitted that he shot and that the bear died, but on ex amination it was found that he had not touched a hair. Oar Enemies. In one of the public schools the other day, while the teacher was instructing the scholars on the folly of intemperance, she com menced by saying that liquor was man's greatest enemy. A oung Hiberian, fresh from the Emerald Isle, who was listening with much attention, said that wc should love our enemies, a statement which the teacher thought was right, but was much perplexed by the witty remark. "But," continued the boy, with a good-natured smile, and relieving ethe embarrassment of the teacher, "wc shouldn't swaiiow mem. j onuuia, ..izi'., Arrfiis. A Fact Worth Knowing Xo mere cathartic can exert any aclltm upon the Liver, yet many persons of a bllioui habit aro continually dosing themselves to produce actions which only weaken tho bowols and aegravato the evil. Augustus Charles Hobart Hamp den, third son of the late Earl of Buckinhamshire, a lineal descen dant of John Hampden, whose name he assumed, was born on April 1st, 1822. He entered the navy at an early age. and his first experiences were of the rudest. The description of the midship men's berth to which be was intro duced might be compared with those of "Midshipman Easy" or "Peter Simple," and his captain, though his cousin, is represented as an odious tyrant. Some of the stori es told of this man are well nigh incredible. "I have seen," says Hobart, "a captain order his steward to be flogged almost to death because his pea soup was not hot. I have seen an officer from twenty to twenty-five years of age made to stand between two guns, with a sentry over him, be cause he had neglected to see and salute the tyrant who had come on deck in the dark." Such tyrrany is by no means without a parallel, aud, as Hobart says he saw it, there is no reason to doubt the correctness ot the story. One more extraodinary is this. "On one occasion the captain of whom I have been writing invited a friend to breakfast with him, and there being, I suppose, a slight monot ony in the conversation, he asked his guest whether ho would like, by way of diversion, to see a man flogged. The amusement was ac cepted and a man was flogged." Longman's Magazine. A flockmaster declares that sheep will restore tho worst of worn out ranges to a better state than iw original fertility. The stones will remain; but if bushes are cut, sheep will prevent their growth again; briers and black berry bushes, if mowed, will soon disappear from the soil, together with all vanettcs of noxious weeds.
