"nr &gn i-3?tm?&Zfi& tfwi'i mjiimajwH" pj gutty gstoriatt. ASTORIA. OREGON: SATURDAY- .FEBRUARY 11. 1SS8 THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. The chamber of. commerce con vened last evening, Judge Bowlby presiding, E. O. Holden, secretary. A large representation of the member ship was present. After the reading ot the minutes and passing of bills, a communication was read from rep resentative Hermann; also from D. Hagerty, actingjassistant postmaster general, in reply to the remonstrance of the chamber against the miserable mail service rendered by the con tractor ot mail ronte from Oyster ville to "Willapa. Mr. Hagerty, in his letter, stated: "For every failure to perform proper service fines are im posed on the contractor, and because of the repeated failures the postmas ter at Uysterville -was instructed to employ service." The secretary was instructed to communicate to repre sentative Hermann the fact that the mail between these two points was again suspended because the depart ment refused to pay the cost of car rying. A committee report was made re specting the building, by the gov ernment, of a railroad to n stone quarry to facilitate the construction of the jetty at the mouth of tho Columbia river. It having been as certained that a bill recommending an appropriation for that purpose had been presented in congress, the secretary was instructed to write to our representatives urging them to use their influence to secure the ap propriation desired. Information having been received that, owing to the increased and in creasing work required from the in spector of this light house district, a wharf was needed for light house pur poses at Astoria, seperate and dis tinct from the buoy depot at Tongue Jfomt, and that application had been made to tho department for an appro priation for that purpose, on motion, the secretary was instructed to com municate to our representative in congress the request of the Chamber tiiot they secure, it possible, tne needed appropriation. The subject of increased trade and travel between Astoria and Gray's Harbor and adjacent points, was brought before the Chamber and free ly discussed. A committee of three, Messrs. Gordon, Devlin and J. W. "Welch, was appointed to confer with the Hwaco Steam Navigation compa ny as to ways and means to perma nently provide extended facilities for travel and transportation to those points. Attention was called to a telegram sent to the New York Daily Sun, and reprinted, with fitting comment, in The Daily Astorian, in which were many false statements representing disasters to shipping at the mouth of the Columbia river on January 26th, and the president and secretary were instructed to forward to New York papers a denial of the truth ot any of the statements of said telegram. The chamber then adjourned. Another Protest Against Bar Charges. Portland, Feb. 9, 18Sa To the Editor of The Oregenian: As bearing on tho important sub ject of port charges, a vessel of 800 and one of 1500 tons register have just had to pay S1000 each for towage in and out over the bar! This is more than double what the service has usually been done for and is rea sonably worth. This piratical style of business on the part of the tug own ers will naturally have the effect in time of reducing competition, but in the meantime it is doing incalculable damage to the reputation of the port damage which is not measured bv the actual dollars and cents extorted, but by the reputation the port gets of being subject to such extortionate treatment. It sais little for the in telligence and public spirit of our leaing men that this evil 13 not coped with and subdned. Ship owners and shipping men can stand it; they can protect themselves in their liauraius. The sufferers are the landowners and business men of Portland :: 1 the farming community of the vahtarnd eastern uregon. llow lo.ig are tlwy going to stand it? X. WortH Iiiioivln. Mr. V. II.
