For the last year I could not take a drink of cold water nor eat .any meat without vomiting it up. My life was a misery. I had had recommended Simmons Liver Regulator, of which I am now taking the second bottle, and the fact is that words cannot express the relief I feel. My appetite is very good, and I digest everything thoroughly. I sleep well now, and I used to be very restless. I am flesh ing up fast; good strong food and Simmons Liver Regulator have done it all. I write this in hopes of bene fiting some one who has suffered as I did, and would take oath to these slate- ments if desired." E. S. BALLOT:, Syracuse, iW&. J. H. Salem, January 30. Additional particulars of the tragedy at Inde pendence Sunday morning only add to the intensity of the horror and the revulsion occasioned by the receipt of the first information of the event. Front an examination of physi cians, and partial testimony of the mother of tlte murdered girl, Sym tnic Antle, it is learned that for vears the brutal stepfather, Win. Landrcdtl), has made her the vic tim of his bestial passion, and there is little doubt that the motive of the awful crime was the fear that his stepdaughter would become a mother, or would soon divulge the terrifying secret which was the burden of her existence. The murder was as fiendish in conception as it was horrible in execution. With a fourteen inch knife the inhuman wn-tch entered Sy m mie's room Sunday morming, and notwithstanding her most piercing screams and desperate re sistance delibeiately butchered her by htriking fourteen blows upon the body and head. Any one of fniir wounds would have been fa tal. Probably the last entered the head just forward of the right ear and penetrated five inches, pass ing almost through. The mother and two of the boys were aroused and interfered, but too late to prevent the accomplish ment of the deed. One of the boys, Wilburn, aped 13, picked up a loaded shotgun, and while a struggle was in progress between his father, mother and brother, watched his chance to shoot the unnatural father. Landredth fled, and the older brother disarmed Wilburn before lie could accom plish his purpose. The manner of his flight and the capture of the murderer have already been de tailed. Last night marshal Bohauon and deputy Williams, mindful of the Ke'.ty lynching which took place six months since, discreetly con veyed Landreth to the farm of Ly man Dayman, four miles houtli west of town. The precaution was probably well taken, fur the the feeling of the people was high, and another lynching might haw occurred. This morning lie was brought back to town and his e.auii!i:it.:i occurred at 1 o'clock, district :it toinej' Belt appearing for the pios ecution, and Benj. Hayden for the defense. The testimony of the mother, the boj- Willis, and the daughter Lizzie, elicited no specially new information. Mrs. Landreth, over powered with grief and evidently dazed by the awful events of the day before, gave her evidence in a hesitating and confused manner, but from the partial statement she made it was apparent that the un fortunate girl had for years been used as a means of satisfying the step-father's lust. Defense waived examination, and was bouud over to await the actiou of the grand jury, which convenes next June. Sheriff Groves, marshal Bohau on and a deputy immediately brought the prisoner to Salem and lodged him in jail here for safe keeping. Landreth is G3 years old, coarse appearing, and of almost herculean strength. Ho was once a mer chant at Coburg, Yamhill county lie assigns no cause for his horri ble deed other than the "daughter was trying to injure him." Symmie was between 18 and 19, was very pretty, and notwithstand ing her unfavorable surroundings was rather of a refined disposition. This is the fourth miirber which has occurred in Polk county in seven months. Startling Discovery. One Hundred Miles of Blockade. San Fkancisco, Jan. 30. Ow ing to storms which have prevailed along the line of the California & Oregon road, railroad officials have given orders to discontinue the sale of tickets north of Delta, and have transmitted an order to Port land preventing the sale of tickets south of Ashland. It is thought the road will be clear in four days. Rain continued to fall yesterday and it seemed, in the language of a railroad official, "as if the whole country had let go and piled down upon the track." In Sacramento cam'on masses of earth and rock were heaped upon the track in such a way as to bury it for long distances, but in the country above Mount Shasta, and especial ly in the Siskiyous, slides were of such an extont as to discourage the working force in its efforts to clear away the debris. The situa tion this morning was far front en couraging. A heavy rain was fall ing and more slides occurred. General superintendent J. A. Fill more, of the Southern Pacific company, said the track was blocked by these slides for a dist ance of about 100 miles. "The worst trouble," said he, "is between Delta and the eighteenth crossing of the Sacramento river and be tween Coles and Ashland. All the way through the Siskiyous wher ever there was a chance for a slide the track is covered with debris. You sec the extent of the country covered by the landslides is such as to prevent us from getting around. Tne stage road is in a bad condition, having been neg lected since the opening of the railroad, and I don't believe that a six horse teim could draw a stage coach over the road empty, let alone hauling passengers and mail." "Have you any available work ing force Dcsules that now -on t!id grade?"' 'Yi'!-, I think we will ger about 100 men together bv to-iiH-now from here and Sacramento. Tliev will be able to get to woik Wed nesday morning. That will givi us ; foice of 430 men. If it atop raining -.vis cm have the track all clear in a very few day?, but if it continues to lain it will lie .i verv hard matter to tell when wc will open up the line again. The trou ble i as in most new roads. I he cuts are not sloped back as thi'y should be. I his, ol course, will be done Liter. Fills, too, are not solid enough to stand ballasting, but they will' no doubt, settle and when properly ballasted there will be no more trouble from that source." Prophylactic Fluid. It is invaluable, in scarlet fever, diph theria, small-pox, cholera, yellow, tj nhoiil and other feveis. For sick-rooms, to prevent the spread of contagion, it is the best disinleetant known. Hon. Alex. II, Stephens, or Ga. Daibvs Prophylactic Fluid is aitiele of little cost, but great value. Its do mestic as well as medicinal uses arc numerous while its specialities are most wondei ful. No head of a family should ever bo without it. Reported Favorably. Washington, Jan. 30. Sena tor Stanford to day reported fa vorably from the senate committee on public buildings and grounds, a bill approptating 500,000 for the construction of public buildings at Portland, Or. It is a fact worth knowing that, as a household remedy, for chil dren and adults, Ayer's Pills are invaluable. Since congressman Herman dis tinguished himself by introducing more bills in the house of repre sentatives in one day than any congressman did before the Ore yon Jler inter speaks of him irrever ently as "Bill" Herman.
