EAHK0AD TIMBER.
James Fiaser, the South V.'ater
street lumber commission dealer, of
this city, says the Chicago j orth
iccstcrn Lumberman, has for the
past year been mnn-ed in hand-
ling iir timber from Portland,
Oregon, to poinls on the Atchison, j
Topeka & Santa Fe s-stem of rail
ways, between the south Pacific
coast and Missouri river, lie lin?
carried on this operation in con
nection with a St. Louis railway
supply and contracting fiiin.
During the year he has delivered
f"" 15,010 "to 17,000 pieces, a
huge proportion going to Kansas
City, or other points accessible to
the Santa Fe svstem in Kansas.
These timber are G.1G 30 and 32
or 7xlG 30 and 32, with a propor
tion of 12x12. An immense
amount of such timber is used in
the eotibtruelinn of railways in the
mountain reiusis. of New Mexico,
Arizona and California by the
Santa Fe sys-tem, as well as by the
Union Pacific and other systems
farther north. In building rail
ways among the maintains, an im
mense amount of trestle work has
to be constructed for the purpose
of obviating excavation, filling and
blasting.
Mr. Fraser was led to embark in
the work of supplying Pacific coast
nr iiinucr to railroads east ot tne
Rocky mountains by the difficulty
of procuring Norway or white pine
in sufficient quantities to fill his
contracts. In 1SS3 SG he had
contiacts for 10,000 pieces of rail
way timber. After n hard tussle
he was able to get only 2,000
pieces. I lie trouble was to get
enough that was of the requisite
size and lenscth that would nispe
as good as the contractors wanted.
Last winter ho resolved to keek a
field of more ample supply, and
visited Oregon and Washington
for the purpose of investigating
the fir timber in those regions.
The result was highly satisfactory,
lie found that he could lay down
fir timber at Kansas points for
about 621 a thousand. White pine
and Norway timber of tiie re
quired size and length on dock or
j"o tfcj Hrttf 4"tct CVi n ii I SJ"
S.o .a tliou-
sand. So it was
strated that there
ciearry ttetnou
was an advati-
tage in handling fir, if only the
cost was considered. But he found
that he could rct anv miantitv of
fir timber, and that it was so uni
formly perfect that it scarcely
needed any inspection. It could
be had of any size or length re
sired. Ie also found that, as a
timber of tensile strength, it was
much preferable to Pine or Nor
way. He says that it has been
demonstrated that fir timber will
bear more strain without, breaking
than oak. Neither does it rot easi
ly, like the yellow pine of the
South, when exposed to dampness.
1 hus his investigations demon
strated to him that the fir of the
North Pacific coast was the timber
resource that he desired, and he
embarked in the enterprise of pur
chasing and forwarding it, and has
made a success of the undertaking.
He now contracts for the delivery
of 5000 pieces next year.
Two cargoes of timber handled
the past season were sent down
the coast to San Diego, Cal., to be
thence distributed on the Sant Fe
system. These cargoes go from
Puget sound mills. All other han
dled by Mr. Fraser was shipped
eastward from Portland, Or., and
was out from Columbia river tim
ber. Mr. Fraser, as a pioneer in this
eastward timber movement, has
studiod the North Pacific coast
lumber questicn with much inter
est. He has reached the conclu
sion that the time is near at hand
when lumber from Oregon and
Washington will not only be large
ly shipped into the trans-Missouri
country, but into this city" and all
the surrounding region. He says
that fir, when dry, is a lighter
wood than pine and is thus well
adapted to long distance shipment.
The railroads extending to the
North Pacific coast are certain to
make rates that will encourage
eastern shipments of lumber. The
white pine manufacturers need not
greatly fear this rivalry. It will
take a long time to overcome the
prejudice of consumers in favor of
the soft wood of Michigan, Wis
consin and Minnesota. Yet it has
hereafter to encounter more oppo
sition in the markets of the west
than hitherto. Even while white
pine is struggling for the mainten
ance of its position in the South
west against the inroads of yellow
pine, poplar and cypress, Oregon
fir and cedar are coming over the
mountains to Denver, Omaha and
Kansas City in largo quantity.
The loss of demand by this compe
tition of southern and far western
woods will be partly compensated
by the increase of the general con
sumptive requirements throughout
the country; but for all that, it is
probable that the supply of -white
pine will last much longer, than
some have predicted, by reason of
rising tide in the manufacture and
dibtribution of the fir, cedar and the
spruce ot tnenorin iracinc cua&i,
the reiHvqpa ot uamornia, anu inc
yellow pine, poplar and cypress ol
the b.iuth.

The Destruction of Elk's Antlers.
Some months since the question
of what become of antlers shed
yearly by elk and deer, was dis
cussed at great length. Several
theories to account for their dis
appearance were given, but now
comes Captain J. H. Smith, of the
Ninteenth U. S. infantry, who has
l new theory. This agent, he says,
is the larva; of a small insect,
which attacks the horn as soon as
it falls and destroys it by burrow
ing into its substance. He says
that he has often observed this
and has obtained numerous speci
mens at such times which were
perfectly "riddled" by the larva?,
until the horns were ready to fall
to pieces almost by their own
weight.
If Capt. Smith is correct in his
observations for the region where
he made them there mus-t be more
than one species of insects con
cerned in the .destruction of the
horns of the cervida?, because it is
not to be expected that any one
species could have the full range
of climate and wide geographical
distrbution which that family of
mammals has. Orcfonian.
