ASTORIA. OREGON:
SATUISDAT
JANUARY SI. IShS
Fob the first time in the history of
tb.it section, a raaa froze to death last
Tuesday near Austin, Texas.
The January docket of the inter
state commerce hearing fixes the 31st
as the dato for hearing the Oregon
wool case.
During the year 18S7 1C0.S51.C15
bushels of grain were received and
marketed in Chicago; also 2,379,435
head of cattle, 5,470,711 hogs and 1,
830,000,000 feet of lumber.
Tun party that can intorest the real
independents can carry elections, and
the party that show tho broadest com
prehension of national and state affairs
will get the independent voters.
T .
In the several carpet mills of New
York there are 2,700 girls employed,
who avcrago' S3 per week. They all
belong to Assembly No. 12G. They
are said to bo about tho bost-dresscd
working women in thecity.
Tnn Cantdian Pacific railroad
company will build at its shops this
winter 5,000 freight cars, 2,000 flat cars
and 200 locomotives. Largo shops
are to be erected at Montreal and
additional labor is to bo employed.
Entomologists show that tho bee
invented the canning business. When
a bee hai filled a cell with honey and
put the cap on, ho punctures the cap
with his stinger and deposits inside a
drop of formic acid, which preserves
the honey.
Since tho treaty with Great Britain
was signed in 1SSG fitty-threo embez
zlers have fled to Canada and their
embezzlements amount to S 1,000,009.
If tho last three ciphers were left off
it would bo plain "stealing." Funny
what three 0's will do.
Another presidential election in
tho United States approaches and the
Cobdcn clnb sends out to its members
and friends an appeal for subscriptions
to another "publication fund.' Brit
ish journals state that the fijnd raised
two years ago is exhausted, and that
numerous publications by the club are
now delayed by lack of funds. At the
last meeting of the club it was stated
with proper prido that over twelve
million leaflets, beside books and pam
phlets in largo number, had been is
sned and circulated from the fund
raised in 1855.
Throughout the present detention
Tnn Astorian has, to the extent of its
ability, supplied Astorians with tele
graphic news from the outside world,
and is glad to know that its efforts to
other papers have been appreciated. It
take the place of the Oreyonian and
improves the occasion to passingly re
mark that if halt the money that is
sent away to support other newspapers
was used to fittingly patronize the
local press, the result would bo better
all around. It costs money to run a
newspaper that gives the news and
it is cnablcdt o supply its patrons
with the news in exact ratio with their
patronage.
A. L. Eives, Superintendent of the
Panama Itailway company, has re
turned from Aspinwall to New York
for the first time since ho went to tho
Isthmus six months ago. Tho roports
which ho brings of tho Panama rail
way and Da Lesseps canal aro en
couraging to those interested in both
entsrpnses. "Great injustice," said
superintendent Rivc3, "!ia3 beendono
the D3 Lesseps enterpriso by most of
tho United States papers. Unfavor
ablo reports, I believe, have been act
uated partly by those financially op
posed to tho schemo and partly by
thoso who do not liko tho idea of the
Preach peoplo controlling this great
work on -tho American continent The
air ought to be cleared of tho idea
that tho French government has any
control over the canal."
The London Ironmonger, after not
ing that "tin, copper, speller and
quicksilver have been taken in hand
by the speculators" and that "values
have been rushed up to abnormal and,
wo may say, absurd figures," adds that
"tho latest rumor is that a syndicate
is being formed, or has been formed,
for the purpose of 'booming' iron. It
is not stated by whom the operation
is to be performed. They ought to bo
strong men, both as to will and fianan
ces, for to successfully send up iron is
a task requiring herculean energies.
To movo tin or copper is mere child's
play compared with tho lifting of iron
prices. "What will tho syndicate do
with the surplus stocks? "What will
they do with regard to current pro
duction, and the -100 idle blastfur
naces? Unless they are prepared with
a perfect schemo they must fail, and
unless thoy aro strong enough to take
the Glasgow stocks out to sea and
throw them overboard, it is certain
that they will .fail."
SOME REMARKS ON ADVERTISING.
At tho beginning of the year, says
the Tacoma News, business firms and
corporations usually renew or make
fresh contracts for annual advertis
ments in the newspapers "which, they
have chosen us tho medium of con
stant communication between them
selves and the public; others slide
along and advertise in a desultory
sort of way until they find it becomes
necessary to make some big announce
ment in order to catch up the
over moving current of trade. There
are merchants who will tell you that
because business has slackened down
somewhat from one cause or another
they will not advertise for awhile, just
as if the every day wants of the com
munity took 'a rest at times and
toe peoplo were overstocked with the
necessaries of life. That any mer
chant who expects to keep pace with
his competitors can afford to ignore
newspaper advertising is an exploded
idea. Onco in a great while it is pos
sible to find some antiquated' candi
date for tho fossil department of a
museum who will argue against'all
kinds of advertising, but the species
is rapidly becoming extinct and spec
imens are already regarded as curios
ities in business circles.
Merchants of experience make it a
point to keep their business constant
ly before the public, and tho best
manner of accomplishing this is by
using the columns of tho daily press.
Those who make annual contracts
secure the advantage of cheaper
rates, and their announcements are
read in every household in tho com
munity; the name and location of the
business house becomes familiar to
every member ot tue family ana tno
canny housewife is not blind to the
advertisements in a newspaper, it
others are. Let a man be taken with
a pain under his vest, however and he
is pretty sure to be reminded of
something ho has read which will fit
his trouble, and he forthwith looks it
up in his paper.
The great point in advertising is to
reach the greatest number of people
at the smallest expense. To every
bona fide subscriber to a daily news
paper there is an average of at least
iivo readers in the residential por
tions of n city, in business circles the
average is larger. No merchant can
afford to neglect or ignore auy first
class newspaper as an advertising
medium, from difference of opinion,
prejudico or any other cause. The
newspaper has a large constituency
of its own, and its readers aro con
sumers and purchasers. Wo have
heard business men say, "Wo prefor
such and such a paper it voices our
sentiments, etc." Now a business
man who'' talks in that strain
might bo expected to stand in his
doorway and ask a customer his re
ligion or politics before offering to
show him his goods. "It is your
duty to snpport your paper,'' is a
worn out poverty howl. It is your
duty to your own business to adver
tise it and your duty to your city to
aJvertisa abroad by your enterprise
and liberality that tho community
von livo in is wide awake and pro
gressive. A city is judged by its news
papers, to a greater degree tnan oy
any one kind of enterprise it possess
es. Every business house should bo
represented in the newspapers of the
place. Tho advertisements comprise
an exhaustive index to tho commerce,
trade and industrial features of the
city, and aro so regarded by the visi
tor, the stranger and tue correspond
ent. Aside from thi3 view of the case,
however, "it pays to advertise,' and
it pays to advertise constantly. No
one is asleep these days, and no mer
chant has such a wonderful pull on
tho public that his place will be
sought out whether he announces his
attractions or not. Tho merchant
who gives up his advertising for a
month or two to savo a few dollars,
might as well pull down his blinds to
keep his goods from getting sun
burnt, or close up an hour earlier
every day to save gas. Tho business
enterprise of to-day will allow no man
to rest upon his oars, and the public
must know that his boat is moving
with tho others every day or he is
sooa-ont of the race and dis'anced.
R-r-r-ats ! !
Tho poetess sings: "I'm haunted
ofttimes by a song unsung. It has
clutched my brain, and my heart has
wrung." Nonsense. Tha't's not an
unsnng song. That's a case of able
bodied nightmare, 1G hands high, and
fearless of steam whistles the result
of eating too much cake just before
retiring. If a song unsung would
clutch the brain and wring the heart,
fancy the d evastation it would cause i f
somebody went tq sing it. It would
paralyze a man kill him so dead that
he would die on tho spot.

New Yobk, Jan. 20. General F. F.

tract with the government of Venez
uela to take out the greatest number
ot emigrants possible. They will be
citizens of the government of Venez
uela from the time of their arrival

tary service for ten years. The gov
ernment promises to pay the passage
of all emigrants over six years of nge
and nnder fifty, but when they reach
there thoy must accept an order to

A UNIONIST BOYCOTT.
London, Jan. 20. A manifesto has
been issued by William Crawford,
who is a Gladstonian and a member of
parliament for Mid-Durham, in which
he advised the Durham miners con
cerning their treatment of unionists
as follews: "Don't drink, eat or sit
in a chapel with them. Regard them
as unfit companions for yourselves,
and their sons unfit husbands for
your daughters. Brand them with
the curse of Cain." This ha created
a sensation. Crawford is secretary of
