What Not to Say.
"Stopping," for slaying. As,
"He is stopping with us," for "He
is staying with us."
"Right away," for immediately.
"Come right away" shonld be
"come at once," or immediately.
"Some," for about or probably.
"It is some five miles to town,"
should be, "it is about five miles,"
etc.
"Storms," for rains or snows.
Storm is an atmospherical disturb
ance and has reference to air and
wind.
"Nice," for prettv, prood. "That
is nice, ho is a nice boy, isn't she
nice?" etc. Something nice is
delicate, exact, as a nice point in
a discussion.
"Try and come, do write," etc.,
for trv to come, to do so, to w rite,"
etc. "I shall trv and come to see
you soon," should be "I shall try
to come," etc.
"Posted," for informed. As "he
is not posted on that matter; post
him on the subject." Post moans
to put up a sign or to drop a letter in
the postoflice.
"Guess," for suppose or think.
"I guess this is right," should be
"I think," etc. Guess means to
"hit at random, as "I can't guess
how many cents you have."
"Party," for person. Party is
a gathering of people, not an in
dividual. "Who is that party?"
when one is meant, should be,
"who is that person or individ
ual?" "Funny," for odd or strange.
As, "it seems very funny to me
that he does not come, "should be,
"it seems very strange," etc.
Funny is something amusing, full
of fun.
The Youngest Senator.
The new senator from West
Virginia, Mr. Faulkner, is the
youngest man in the bod3, being
six months the junior of his col
league, Mr. Kenns, and nine
months younger thin Mr. Spooner
of Wisconsin. He will be forty
years old in March. The young
est man ever admitted to the sen
ate was Stephen W. Dorsey, who
was thirty-six years old when he
was sworn in. There have been
a number of senators who were
lets than forty-one when they were
sworn in, but the average as! in
that body was never so low a-,
now. Mr. Frye, of Maine, is tin
youngest looking man in the sen
ate, although he is nearly sixty,
and is the grandfather of nine
healthy youngsters. He has not a
rrrow nuiF rr nio hnnrl Hie nmii.
wi "" v nd iiLuiA J.-1.10 v-vti-
plexion is as fresh as it was forty
years age, and he doesnot look
more than thirty-five. The oldest
looking man is Mr. Edmunds, who
would be taken for a hundred at
least. Mr. Evarts is a bundle of
wrinkles, and Mr. Merrill, the
man who carries the greatest num
ber of years, looks fully as old as
he is seventy-eight. Washing
ton Special.
"Papa," she said as the old man
came in late, "young Mr. Samp
son offered himself to me to-night
and I refused him. And oh, papa,
I am afraid his heart is broken."
"He told me about it," said the
old man. "Then you met him."
"Yes; he is down at the Eagle
playing billiards." JV. Y. Sun.

He Was Like the Moon,
A plain spoken country preacher
in Texasw as called upon to make
a few remarks at the grave of a
man who was somewhat unpopular,
and who during his life was much
addicted to drink. The preacher
fulfilled his task in the following
werds: "With what shall I com
pare the deceased remains? Shall
I compare him with the sun? No,
never. The sun blinds people with
its brilliancy. The deceased never
blinded any body with his brillian
cy. Shall I compare him with the
stars? No not with the stars that
can only be seen by night. Our
late friend could be seen both day
and night at the saloons. I think,
on the whole, we had better com
pare him with the moon. The
moon gets full every once in a
while, and so did the deceased.
I've heard that the moon borrows
its light, and so did the remains,
for he smoked a great deal and
was always letting his cigar go out.
Peace to his ashes."
A very natural mistake: Uncle
Mose, entering the house of judge
Pennybunker, was astounded at
bearing a parrot exclaim: "Take
off your hat!" He complied at
once, ejaculating with chattering
teeth: "'Scuse me, boss; 'fore
God, I mistuck ye for a bird. I
did, euah." Texas Sifting.
The further a man gets away
from a dollar the bigger it looks.
