PJ Wt &mH gisiodaw. ASTOKIA. OREGON: THURSDAY. JANUAKY 19. 1SS8 Kansas has a new postoffice named Zero. The namo would apply to the whole state just now. The state of Missouri bra recently placed a loan of S2,500,CC0 with a Boston house at 3J per cent. These is alarm in Mexico over the growth of American interests there and the great number of Yankee resi dents. Tun Chinese government has just appointed Henry Merrill chief com missioner of customs at Corea, at a ealary of ?12,000. Theei: citizens of Scott county, Kan., made up a purse of $700 for the purchase of counterfeit money and re ceived a brick in return. AcARloadotbean3 for use in Wis consin logging camp3 has been re ceived at Grceu Bay, direct from Cali fornia. The freight bill wa3 $300. Two Seventh-day Advcntists are on trial at Halifax, Nova Scotia, for per forming labor on Sunday. Their de fense is that Saturday and not Sun day is " the Sabbath of the Lord." ,- M - - The South Carolina legislature managed to place two hundred and thirty-sir laws and thirty-two joint resolutions on tho statute books dur ing a session of twenty-seven days. The discovery that a history of tho United States from which all mention of the rebellion is omitted, is in use in tho public schools of Omaha, has led to a sharp fight in tho board of edu cation. The year's return of failures re ported to P.. G. Dun & Co. shows a decrease of two hundred in number for the year 1837, but a largo increase of fifty-three million dollars in liabil ities. Bostoii has felt well enough tho last sis months to put about fifteen million dollars into a few western en terprises, and has money enough left to pay her debts and lay up something for a rainy day. There are now published in the City of Mexico eight or ten papera de voted exclusively to bull fights. On the other hand there arc but four or five papers which serve as organs of tho working people. " That's good; threo years will just give me time to learn a trade," said Benjamin French in Roanoko court the other day when tho judge had sen tenced him to a threo years' term in the penitentiary. I ! AsmrjiENT of five young Indian girls from Alaska arrived in Massa chusetts a fow days since. They a:.. to be educated and returned to their native land to earn- on tho work of civilizing their people. Among the 325 members of the hotiso of representatives there aro C phy sicians, 2 druggists, 3 clergymen and 21G lawyers. One hundred and seventy-eight are college bred men. Twentv-seven are foreign born. St. Paul, Minn., claims to have spent eleven million dollars in build ings this year. Minneapolis, which held her claim back to see what St. Paul had to say, spent eleven million fivo hundred dollars, as nearly as can be estimated. It is proposed to construct a canal from Dnluth to a point on tho Red river of 11:3 North, and to extend steamboat navigation 1,000 miles west ward from Lake Winncpeg, whore it is possibie to develop wheat lands of COJ.OOO square miles. Each senator and representative at Washington i3 allowed stationery to the value of ono hundred dollars. Those vho do not draw their fnll sup ply can draw in cash what is to their credit. They say that some of them bay cheap stationery and pocket (ho balance. Tnn women of Lag03and Wseoku ta, Africa, sent to queen Victoria a gold calabash as a jubilee present, and, as it was manufactured out of England, her majesty had to pay a duty of SL37 on it before she could get it out of tho custom house. Tho queen is now in favor of free trade. The docks in Portland aro jammed with wheat; of course nothing is mov ing in the way of shipping, for vessels cannot get through ono hundred miles ot ice. No ice troubles Astoria to the sea, and vessels hero have been able to safely depart, tho bar being smooth enough to permit several vessels to sail in. Mbs. Elizabeth Thojipso:?, tho phi lanthropist, never goes to tho theater and has read but two novels. Her tastes aro perfectly simple. It is doubtful if society ever heard of her, but she is the only woman who has the freedom of the floor of the house, n right which even the president's wife doe3 not have. Women aro steadily forcing their way in tho industrial world. The South Brooklyn Ferry company has substituted women for men as collect ors on both sides of the river. They work ten hours a day and receive a salary of SCO per month. They have not only proved themselves as efficient as men, but rnoro honest Secketat.y Batakd says there is no warrant for tho newspaper statements that the government is disposed to re cede from the position which it has always held on tho fishery question, Tho negotiations have not yet suffi ciently progressed to indicate the basis of a settlement, but tho disposi tion of the negotiators is such that American fishermen will secure all material points. The people of tho United States aio looking forward to the census of 1800 with great expectations. Mr. Cox will be chairman of the census committee in tho house of representatives, and the chances are that he will not so burden tho work with details that the publication of tho returns will bo de layed, as those of 1880 were, til! thir usefulness has gone. The great Singer sewing machine company has one factory in this coun try at Elizabeth, N. J., and another in Great Britain, at Glasgow. Though the Scotch establishment employs one-third more hands than tho Ameri can, its weekly pay-roll is only half 33 large, the figures being $18,000 and $35,000 respectively. With sensible, practical workingmen and women such hard facts as these will outweigh all free trade theories. The great ice carnival, which has now become a distinctive feature of tho Minnesota winter, is announced to open in St Paul on the 25th of Jan uary, on which day the Ice King will arrive from Manitoba "by rail." Eleven days are to be devoted to the festivities, which consist of parades of snow-shoo and toboggan clubs, tho storming of tho ice palace by the Fire King, its defense by the Ice King, and thn fiiml rnnfft n? 11m Firo TCimf'fl forces. Houston, Texas, threatens to sur render its charter rather than pay the bonds issued under a carpet-bag gov ernment Four hundred thousand dollars' worth of bonds were issued by the ring that controlled the city twenty years ago, for the erection of a market house, which burned down somo years later, and was rebuilt from tho same plans by tho insurance com panies for less than SU0,d00. The rest of the debt comes from equally expensive improvements. Our dispatches this morning give a brief but vivid account of the terrible loss of life in the states of Minnesota and Kansas and tho territory of Dako ta. Those of us who have dwelt in that part of tho northern Mississippi valley know what it is. When the sun is obscured by pearl-colored mist, when tho breath congeals and tho fro3t strikes the vitals, when to pause means death, and life is a struggle for existence, when to venture from shel ter is a risk, and when the very trees split with the cold. Such an experi ence has been had by many there since New Years, and when tho snow melts next April, hundreds of bodies of those now missing will be found. It is officially announced that tho Dominion government is abont to carry into effect tho pet hobby of pre mier Macdonald to provide a fast lino of ocean steamers to cross the Atlantic in conjunction with tho Canadian Pa cific railway. This will abolish tho existing subsidies and faeilitato travel and the transfer of freight, so that by this plan travelers and mails leaving Liverpool will be in Chicago by tho time tho New York peoplo aro being landed there. Tho government, in company with an English syndicate, will put on five steamers of 7,000 gross tons register and of 13,000 horse power, with a capacity of carrying 425 saloon and intermediate and 1,000 third-class passengers. They will have a maximum speed of twenty knots, draw twenty-seven feet loaded, with a lifting capacity of 13,000 tons. Thoy are to carry no heavy freight, but will have accommodations for light and perishablo produce. It is estimated that tho establishment of this service would entail an expenditure of SG,000, 000, and that each round trip would cost from $55,000 to 875,000. . . While Examining Hli Cltr Property He is Attacked bj a Bear. Three or four of them, says the S. F. Examiner, were sitting with their feet propped on the big stoTe at the Brooklyn. The man from Nevada had told a thrill ing tale of a midnight encounter with gray wolves in the llnmboldt Basin in 'GO. Tom Flynn, the Arizona pioneer, had recounted a tragic story of life omong the Apaches, and the man from Wind river told the story of tho vioious wild dogs. "Let mo give you a uiain. unvarnished tale of a man cad a bear," said the man from "Washington Territory, as he reacnea ror a match to light tho long pipe ho had jtut iillod. "In '81, just as the golden spike was being driven to connect the two end) of the Northern Pacifio at the big Mullen tunnel, mere was a mighty boom in fort land. Thousands upon thousand of people had congregated there from all quartors of the earth. The hotels, boarding-houses and residences coaldn't hold them. Property rose in valae to phenom enal figures. Additions were laid off in the woods. Speculators had great colored maps and otmrts in all their ofSce3, cir culars were scattered far and near. AH kinds of real-estate schomes were pro jected to rake in the ready dollar. In Morrison street, near the postoflice, was an unscrupulous pair of skinflints. They had on one side of their hole-in-the-wall office a highly colored map of a rising town on Gray's harbor. Here was marked tho big wharf which was just completed, there was the hotel, schoolhoase, the site of the two churches for which lumber was now being delivered, the large busi ness houses, and so on. In a week's time, too, a myriad of other things were to be commenced and poshed forword to im mediate completion. "llany people boaght the lots that wore for sale. They were not overhigh, con sidering tho mighty projects were under way and the hum of busy life as they were Dortraved bv the agents. Thev jnst nipped them up and didn't go down to see them. One day along came a man jnst arrived, and, having a fow hundred dol lars and a family, and seeing from the stories that were told him that Metropo lisville was to be a great place, he at once bought four lots at $150 apiece, and planked down tho G00 for them. He was afraid that by the time he got down to see them they would all be gone. So be took them first, and the next day shippad on the Fleetwood to make ar rangements for building. At Astoria he took the Gen. Canby for tho lcoath of tho harbor. Arriving there in the even ing ho took the up-river boat for tho new town, twenty miles beyond. "Ho was somewhat surprised to bs told by the captain that the boat did not touch nt Jletropolisville, as no landing placo was there. In fact, the captain bad considerable difficulty in recollecting that there was any such place at all. He consented, however, finally, to pat off the man at the given point, and after several hoars awoko him from a sleep and put him ashore. "Tho tugboat had scarcely gone when the man began to yell for it to stop. He had discovered that he was in tho deep woods. liat the boat was too iar away, and he could not make the captain hear. He floundered out farther, thinking he might find a house, and getting into the undtrbrush, a big black bear jumped on him, toro hi3 coat and breeches, and nearly scared the life out of him. Ho wandered around all night, nearly freez ing to death, and at length, after two or three days, managed to get back to Port land about as near dead as he could be, glad to be able to get about at all. Im mediately armed himself with a big re peater and went to tho real-estate office. The amiable agents were not in, but tho man was not to be pat off that way. Ho laid for them and made them fork over, not only the original $C0O, bat 100 for expensas. "There was sack a laugh raised against the firm and so much sympathy for the man, that they daro not prosocato, and finally, amid tue general derision, thev re tired from business altogether. Thoy couldn't do any inoro business in the town. A more disgruntled man I sup pose you never saw when, where he ex pected to find a live town, he was ran out of the woods by a black bear." A married man refused to go with his wife to a social the other night, saying that ho had to attend an im portant meeting, so the woman stayed at home, but the man went to the so cial just tho same and got home abont 2 o'clock in the morning, and stealthily crept into the house and to the bcilside whero his wife was sleep ing. After getting his clothing off, ready for bed, ho imagined that his wife was waking up, so he began rocking the cradle, which stood near the bed, as though he had just got up out of bed for that purpose. His wife, after be had been rocking about five minutes, raised tip in bed and said: "You infernal old fool, come to bed. I have the baby here." Ho went. Notice. Tennant's Nautical Almanac. One of Holmes' (Jems. Ofttimcs I have seen a tall ship glide by against the tide as it drawn by somo invisible towline with a hun dred strong arms pnlling it. Her sails unfilled, her streamers droonlng, she had neither side wheel nor stern wheel; still she moved on stately, in serene triumph with her own life. But I knew that on the other side of tho ship, hidden beneath the great bnlk that swam so majestically, there was a little toilsome steam tug, with a heart of fire and arms ot iron, that was tugging it bravely on, and 1 knew if the little steam tug untwined her arm aud left the ship, it would wal low and roll about, and drift hither anu muuer, and go off with the re fluent tide, no mau knows whither. And so I have known more than one genius, high-decked, full-freighted, idle-sailed, gay-pennoned, bat that for the bare, toiling arms and brave, wnrm-beating heart of the faithful little wife, that nestles close to him, so that no wind or wave could part them, he would have gone down with the stream and been heard of no more.
