BACK PAT DEMANDED.
.' Claim of Soldiera that Were Never
Mustered Oat of Service.
Cixcixxati, January 15. There
was a gathering of old soldiers in
Covington, Ky., yesterday with a
a most peculiar object. It was a
meeting of the gallant Forty-first
Kentucky volunteers, to take the
initial measures to be mustered
out of service of the war.
The story is a peculiar one.
During the war a regiment was or
ganized in Uovington composed
mainly ot VJovmgton people.
Thev were sworn in by officers
fully authorized to perform that
duty, and were put under the
command of Captain Amos Shink-
ler. I hey went into the war and
served through it, being known as
the gallant Forty-first Kentucky
volunteers.
It is twenty-three years since
the last gun was fired, and many
of the regiment are numbered
with the dead. Some were killed
in battle, others have died since,
but not a mother's son ol them
was ever mustered out of service,
and no one has any papers to indi
cate that he was discharged.
As a consequence every member
ol the Forty-first Kentucky volun
teers is entitled to pay up to the
present time, and the meeting this
afternoon was for the purpose of
adopting some means to secure
their discharge and pay.
Amos Shinkler. who commanded
the regiment, is still alive, and was
with his men this afternoon.
Should the men's claim prove
valid and be successfully prose
cuted, each man will be entitled
to SC,.")SS counting from the close
of the war.
Opposed to Internal Eevenue.
New Yokk, January 4. The
report of the Union League club's
committee on political reform was
submitted at the annual meeting
last evening. The substance is
embodied in the resolution recom
mended, which says:
Ilenolved, That we deem it wise
Republican statesmanship to abol
ise the internal revenue depart
ment of the United State-, as the
safest and most practicable w.iv :'
reducing the surplus in tho tna
ury and preserving unimpaired tn
great principle of protection in
Ameiican industry, and also to ad
vocate and enforce, wherever the
power exists, rigorous and vigor
ous legislation in the various states
in favor of taxation of the liquor
traffic to the highest degree prac
ticable, to the end that money col
lected from that source may be
applied directly to defray the ex
pense of the pauperism and crime
it entails upon the several states.
The committee was headed by
Whitelaw Reid. The report will
bo called up for action in March.

Indignities to Prisoners.
Dublin, January 14. A Gal
way correspondent of the Evening
Telegram says: "Wilfred Jilnnt
was last evening deprived of his
overcoat by the prison officials,
lie then took off hi prison garb
and demanded his own suit, which
was refused. To-day he staved in
bed. Blunt told :i visiting justice
that Balfour, in recent interviews,
I declared his intention to imprison
six of the physically weakest of
ParnelFs friends, who would bo
unable to survive six months' im
prisonment. The justices have re
fused to receive the written declai
ation, but advised that the prisoner
be removed to a better room and
that his overcoat be restored and
he be supplied with writing inate

Unbelief in Superstition,
New Yor.K, January 14. The
Thirteen club gave one of its unique
dinners last night at the Cafe Mo
relli, only it was a bit more unique
than usual, for it was the occasion
of its annual election. ,
Six long tables, each holding
thirteen guests, filled the dining
hall. Thirteen wax tapers burned
on each table, ine menu was
printed on a gravestone, the wine
list on a coffin-lid. On a silken
banner at the head of the room
blazed the motto of the club:
"Morituri te salutacnus;" but sym
bols of death and the fateful num
ber of 13 were the only things fu
nereal about the dinner.
Merry jest kept pace with the
flow of sparkling wit. "Oh. death,
thou hast no sting, if thou but
come to me at a banquet of the
Thirteen club," was the sentiment
given over brimming bumpers.
At the election olo votes were
cast.
The report of the scribe showed
a membership of 1,300. Dinner
was served at thirteen minutes
past S p. it. There were thirteen
courses, thirteen wines and thir
teen toasts. Telegrams of con
gratulations were sent branch
clubs in as many cities.
It was later than thirteen o'clock
when the club adjourned.
