THE KELLY FAMILY.
The Imitators of the Kansas Benders
Bun to Earth.
A Desperate Defense Mother and Son
Killed.
Wichita, Kan., Jan. 4. The
Kelly family, whose atrocious
crimes startled the entire west,
and whose record was published
several days ago, have all been run
down and killed, except old man
Kelly. Charles Duncan, a cattle
man, reached this city late last
night and gives a sequel to the
horrible crimes of the family. Af
ter the Kellys left their ranch
near Oak City, in "No Man's
Land," they went fifty miles south
into Texas, where they were dis
covered by a posse of citizens.
Mr. Duncan happened in that
country shortly after the discovery
of the bodies, and while the cow
boys and friends of the murdered
men were still out on a hunt after
these people. The excitement was
intense and if any of the family
had been captured and brought
into town, he would have been
torn limb from limb and the pieces
thrown to dogs. The searchers
failed to find any of the fugitives
and came back to town cursing
thoir luck.
Some friends of a merchant
named Johnson, who had been
killed by the Kellys, then con
cluded to catch the fiends if possi
ble. There were just seven in the
party. They had gone about fifty
miles from the starting point and
were preparing to camp near a
small creek when one of the party
noticed a dugout that seemed to
have been newly made a short dis
tance up the stream. He started
toward it, calling to his compan
ions to come and see if the' could
learn anything of the Kellys. The
next instant the sharp report of a
rifle broke the stillness, and a bul
let whistled past the ear of the
man in advance. This proved
that their prey had been run to
earth, and the whole party beat .1
retreat so as to form a plan to cap
ture the gang. It was finally de
cided that three of the party
should advance and dig down into
the place through the roof, while
the other four covered the house
with their guns. The three dele
gated for the hazardous tusk ;ul
vanced and mounted the roof. A
hole was fiualiy made in the top,
when a rapid fusilade began from
within, and one of the attacking
party was shot through the heart.
Nothing daunted, the others
hauled up an old wagon, partly
loaded with dry hay, and set it on
fire right over the hole amid a per
fect rain of bullets. The smoke
poured into the house, as did the
hot coals, but no one of the family
appeared.
Getting tired of waiting, the
avengers closed up the place, and
getting to the entrance, a desper
ate fight took place. The whole
interior of the dug-out was liter
ally flooded with bullets, while
cries and curses came from within.
At last the son of Bill Kelly stag
gered from the place, a horrible
looking sight. His hair was on
fire and one arm broken in two
places. Following him came the
mother, flourishing a big knife in
one hand and trying to shoot from
a revolver with the other. One of
the attacking party, taking delib
erate aim, killed her, just as her
cowardly husband came running
out with both hands up and beg
ging piteously that his life be
spared.
To capture both son and father
required but an instant, '
The prisoners were tortured in
every conceivable manner, while
the son boasted of his wicked
deeds. The latter was finally
hitched to a lariat and dragged to
death over the prairie by a man on
horseback.
The whole party was so inter
ested in watching this death scene
that the old man was forgotten,
and it was now dusk. He suc
ceeded in mounting a horse and
getting a start before his flight
was discovered. There was mount
ing in haste and a stern chase, but
all to no purpose, and the cow
ardly murderer succeeded in es
caping. The man who had been drag
ging young Bill around joined in
the chase, and when it was ended
he-found his victim had been torn
to pieces by the sharp rocks and
hard ground.

Ages of Birds.
Among the candidates for the
prize of longevity, says tin; JZlcv
eur, must be cited the eagle, the
swan and the raven, which live for
over a century. The paroquet, as
well as the heron, is content to be
come a sexagenarian. The sparrow
hawk lives to the age of forty,
which is the age likewise reached
by the duck and pelican. The
pea-fowl lives to be twenty-five,
the pigeon twenty, the crane
twenty-lour, the linnet twenty-five,
the gold-finch fifteen, the lark
thirteen, the black-headed warbler
fifteen, the blackbird twelve, the

The smallest regularly incor
porated railroad in this country is
said to be the New York Central,
Hudson River and Fort Orange
railroad, built for the purpose of
carrying freight to and from the
Fort Orange Paper company's
works. The main track is but
3,lG8"feet in length, and the roll
ing stock consists of a locomotive
and one passenger coach. The
road, however, has a full set of
officers and a board of directors,
and issues a ye lrly official report.
The gross earnings of the road
amount to nearly sd.UUU a year,
but all of this, except about SCO or
so, is consumed in paying the ex
penses of the road.
