CAPTAIN HOOPER'S FRIENDS.
They Present Him With a Curious Pa
risian Clock.
Captain 0. F. Hooper, of the United
States revenue cotter Coricin, will
leave this city to-day for Astoria.
Becoming acquainted with his in
tended departure, a number of friends
determined to show their apprecia
tion of his high qualities as a genial
gentlemen and officer, by giving him
a token of their regard. Yesterday
afternoon, accordingly, these friends
gathered at the Baldwin hotel and
presented the captain with a clock
one of a pattern not seen in this city
before. A short speech of presenta
tion was made by Judgo Walter Levy,
and Captain Hooper responded in a
few well-chosen words of thanks. A
reception then took place, at which
the following well known gentlemen
were present: Israel Lawton, W. D.
English, J. H. McElrath, Judge Wal
ter Levy, General R, P. Hammond,
Jr., W. W. Foote, Thomas J. Clunie,
J. W. Taber, Lieut. W. D. Lawton,
Judge Sullivan, Major M. E. Joyce
and Dr. G. W. Handy.
Tho clock is a beautiful piece of
Parisian workmanship, and its sup
port, from which it is suspended by
chains, is a representation of the cut
ter Corwirfs stern and quarter-deck,
as seen from the stern. This is
where the curious part of the article
occurs, for ranged upon the deck are
all the things a sailor needs to guide
his ship at sea and guess at the
weather. On the top of the miniature
smokestack is the compass a curi
ous place for a compass to be and
the barometer is slung over one side,
a thermometer being on the other.
The propeller of the miniature steam
er is so arranged by a natty bit of
machinery as to be always in motion,
giving a charming realistic effect to
the whole. The clock is twenty-four
inches high and eighteen inches wide.
Captain Hooper was much touched
by the gift. 8. F. Chronicle, Dec. 29.
Says the S. F. Herald of Trade of
the 29th ult: Canned salmon holds
very strong, with a slight advance in
quotations reported for round par
cels. The probable shortage this
year, as compared with last, will be
150,000 cases as far as returns show.
But it must be recollected that this
shortage is in comparison with the
shortage of last year, and would show
a much greater shortage as compar
ed with the pack of 1885. The de
mand continues strong from all
quarters, especially Australia. The
home retail trade is only fairly stock
ed. The London Grocer of Dec. 10th,
says: New salmon of 1S37 pack is ex
pected to arrive here about the be
ginning of January, and sales have al
ready been made of Columbia river
fish at 28s Gd. c. f. and i., for Londen:
but we hear that merchants will not
go on at these term3, as it is general
ly admitted that best brands will not
open at less than 30s per case, and
transactions in tho interval have been
reported at 29s Gd on the spot for best
quality in tall tins. A public sale by
the Hudson's Bay Co. on Wednes
day passed off with some spirit as fol fel fol
eows: 1,760 doz. tius preserved salm
on, ex-Labrador, which went at Gs 3d
to 7s 3d per doz.; also 659 casks salt
ted, salmon, per same ship, tierces
weighing on the average 433 lbs. each
at 121s to 1233, ditto averaging 475 lbs.
each at 983 to 105s, and inferior (477
lbs. each) at 91s to 93s per cask, be
sides a few lots of low quality and
smaller packages at W9 down to 80s
and 27s; but another parcel of 599
bbls salted salmon, "Inverness" brand,
from the Skeena river. British Col
umbia, packed in 18S6, and import
ed per Amberlemo from Victoria, of
fered by a private firm, met no ade
quate bids, and was withdrawn.
As a home remedy for throat and
lung diseases, Ayer's Cherry Pec
toral is invaluable. Druggists
now have Ayer's Almanac.
A remarkable fact, says the S. F.
Commercial-News, just transpired in
reference to a message from the sea
which was picked up at Skerries, on
the Shetland coast. The message, a
scrip of paper in a bottle, in a bottle,
was as follews: "Findhorn tell my
mother we war drowned at see."
From the curious phraseology em
ployed and the fact that there was no
vessel ot the name Findhorn, the
message was generally regarded os a
hoax; but it now appears that the
writing oc the paper has been identi
fied by the writer's mother, who re
sides at Findhorn, Forres, as that ot
her son who, in February, 1885, left
Sunderland for -the Moray Firth on
board the Milina, of Peterhead. The
vessel was never heard of again, and
was generally supposed to have
foundered during a gale of the
21st February, 18S5, somewhere near
the Shetland coast The remarkable
thing is that the bottle has apparently
drifted about for more than two years
and a half, and was at last driven
ashore near where the vessel sup
posed to have foundered.
Ayer's Sarsaprilla stops the nau
seous discharges of catarrh, and
cures the complaint.

A Eunaway Train.
Butte, Mont, Jan. 1. A re
markable and terrible accident oc
curred at 5:1,5 ,o'clock yesterday
morning on thq Utah & Northern
railway, three miles this side of
Dillon. At 3:lf a. m. eleven coal
cars, part empty and part loaded,
got loose at Spring Hill, 57 miles
south of Dillon, and started this
way. It is down grade from
Spring Hill clear to the foot of
Apex bill, three miles this side of
Dillon, a distance of sixty miles.
The cars were missed a few min
utes after they started and the en
gine was sent in pursuit, but grade
was steep all the way to Dillon
and the runaways went like wind.
The operator at Dillon was notified
to side track and ditch them, but a
moment after receiving his instruc
tions they dashed past the station
and continued on their wild course.
At the foot of Apex hill they met
a double-header freight which was
running down grade at the rate of
forty miles per hour. The collis
ion resulted in the runaways be
ing knocked to-pieces and the
front of the engine of the freight
train badly wrecked. Fireman
McShane was thrown under the
wreck and instantly killed, his head
being crnshed under the wheels of
the second engine. Engineer
Sweeney was badly scalded and
lies in a precarious condition at
Dillon. Nearly all the cars in the
freight train were more or less
damaged.
