The queen of Roumania has written a Christmas story for one of the newspapers published in her capital. Two Indian philologists are ex pected shortly in St. Petersburg for the purpose of compiling a "Russo-lndian dictionaTT," to be published at Constantinople. The recently discovered petty cash book kept by Dickens during his term of service with Mr. Black more shows that his salary of 13s 6d a week was raided on the 1st of August, 182S, to 15s a week. Lord Tenn3'son receives an in come of from 20,000 to 25,000 a year from the sale ol his books, but not a cent of it comes from an American publisher, despite the fact that his poetry is nearly as popular here as in England. Frank R. Stockton's litera' ca reer is very encouraging to young authors who feel that they are not appreciated. It is said that for a long time Stockton's productions were a standing joke in the pub lishers' houses. His manuscript was known to publishers a long while before his delicious humor had a chance to reach the public. He was persevering and hopeful, however, and at last the magazines began to print his productions. A correspondent writes to the New York Tribune'. "I notice that Dr. S. T. Smith, the author of 'My Country, 5Tis of Thee,' not long ago read a poem at the cele bration of the 100th birthday of Seth Davis, the veteran schoolmas ter of Newton, Mass. The inci dent reminds one of another which may interest your readers. Some years ago I had the pleasure of lunching with Oliver "Wendell Holmes. He was in full flow of spirits, and, I need not say, enter tained the company to the top of their bent. Suddenly he remarked with earnestness: 'I was dining last evening with a party of old college friends, and among them was the man who wrote tho most popular poem ever produced in America, and yet I don't believe you can tell me to whom I refer.' Whereupon one of the company quoted from one of the doctor's own famous after-dinuer poems these lines: Here comes a young fellow of excellent pith. Fate tried to conceal hira by naming him Smith. "Whereupon tho doctor laughed and owned up. Smith, tho author of 'My Country, 'Tis of Thee,' was one of his classmates. And now pray tell me why have we heard so little of Smith? Is that immor tal patriotic lyric all that he has done that is worth while? When he penned it did he strike twelve?"
