Swear ofL We are having a fine winter. New Year's calls on Monday. Astoria-needs a coal mine or two. The public schools re-open nest Tuesday. Serg't Griffin's new flagpole is all right for '88. New Year's cards printed at The Astorian job office. For low prices and good work, pat ronize The Astorian job office. It is still $20 on the steamer (oSan Francisco and will be for somo weeks yet. Pay your debts: don't go around with other people's money in your pocket The Willamette and the schooners Excelsior and Zampa, came in yes terday. The Pythian Land aud Building association will meet at their hall at 2 this afternoon. Twelve years from to-day Decem ber 31st, 1,900, will bo the last day of the nineteenth century. The recent petition in district No. One to have the teachers' salaries raised was unsuccessful. The highest temperature at any point in the United States last Thurs day was at San Francisco. The loss by fire in Astoria in '87 is gratifyingly small; the least in the aggregate for several years. Eead The Astorian for the news. The line's up again, and our custom ary dispatches appear this morning. In the Congregational church, to morrow evening there will be a lec ture entitled, "Ring out the false, ring in the true. Roses are blooming in the open air and fragrant flowers fre3hfrom the gardens will adorn Astoria's New Year dinner tables. This has, in general, been a pros perous year with Astoria merchants and business men, and the coming year is bright with promise. At the New York Novelty store to night those handsome bisque figures will be presented to patrons. They are worth $50. Be on hand. The case of the Ecclefeclian, li beled by the tug Donald, was dis missed last FrHay by Judge Deady in the United States district court. Small pox is spreading in San Fran cisco, and the health officers are adopting strict quarantine measures. It is also reported to be epidemic in Seattle. Coal is $10 a ton in Seattle, right where they dig it out of the ground, and everybody is mad about it, ex cept the chaps that sell the dusky diamonds. Capt Powell built a railroad, with a locomotive on it, in Clatsop county, in '85. Mayor Trullinger built an other in '87. Wonder who'll build a third, a broad gauge, in '83! Nelson Bennett has sued the Ore gon Pacific railroad company for $551,825, damages, for alleged failure on the part of the company to keep ' its contract with him for railroad work. At a special meeting of the North ern Pacific directors in New York last Thursday, several hours were spent in discussion of the O. R. & N. lease, but no definite action was taken. 1 Up at Walla Walla, last Thursday night, Bob McKenny, a petty larceny thief, kicked a hole through the wall , of Walla Walla's now $26,000 jail and went over to the garrison to get somo supper. Under date ofthe28th insL, CoL J. H. Woodard telegraphs from San Francisco that ho and his associates were delayed by the storm; they will start in a few days, and 'will, proba bly, be here next week. ' m The German Evangelical Reformed congregation will celebrate the holy communion to-morrow at 2 r. m., and the preparation service for it this evening at 730, at the Baptist church, John Gantenbein, pastor. What are you going to do for Asto ria, for the city of your residence, in '88? Make up your mind to do some thing for it You needn't die for it: live for it, talk for it, help it every way you can, and begin now. Rev. E. Howe, late of Iowa, will hold divine service in the Swedish church, upper Astoria, January, 1st, 1888, at 2 p. m., in the Norwegian lan guage. It is interesting to hear him, for those that understand the lan guage. Daring December eighteen' vessels have cleared foreign, grain-laden from this port, fifteen with wheat and three with flour. The wheat cargoes aggre gated 1,040,340 bus., worth 8761,348; the flour cargoes, 44,753 bbls., worth S154,215, a total for the month of S915.563. The Astoria Street Railway com pany has lumber hauled on the ground, and material on the way from Pittsburg and San Francisco. Grad ing, etc., will shortly begin. Cars and rails of the most approved pattern will be used and the work will be put through in good shape. And now we have a coal famine; no coal for sale; very little on hand, and the little that is on hand or foot or dock held for contracts. The O. R. & N. have some, but it is for the tugs; the Manzanita could get none yesterday, and Capt. Flavel has none to sell. Well, there's plenty of wood in the country and no one need go cold, if he can get credit for an ax. The Astorian desires to return its appreciative thanks to the several city and county officials for their kind ness in the matter of furnishing in formation and items during the year now closing. None of them have ever been too busy to give information to the seeker after news, and their uni form courtesy is cordially appreci ated. The new steamer that was recently bnilt at Hood river to ply the Colum bia in opposition to the O. R. & N. Co., is now tied up at The Dalles. In earJy spring, however, the owners ex pect to start it and offer to contract to carry freight from Portland to The D!les at half the rates now being cnarged by the O.R.&N. Co. It is believed, says the Iietister. that J. Kamm will put steamers on this line in connection with the new opposi- ir'u uoat on iuo miauio river. There were four clearances at the custom house yesterday. The Brit ish ship Clan Buchanan cleared for Havre, France, with 117,997 bus. wheat, worth S84.700; theBritishbark QlamUt cleared for Bristol, England, with 61,040 bus. wheat, valned at $43,774; the British ship Thessalus for Queenstowu, with 91,500 bus. wheat, valued at $66,000, and the Brit ish bark Margaret Ifeald for Queens torvn, carrying 10,740 bbls. flour, worth S37,590 a total of foreign clearances for one day of S232.064. Before justice Cleveland yesterday appeared a practical philanthropist named Charles Thompson. He was in Geo. Hill's the other night and saw John Klutten sleeping on a bench. To guard against John's losing $45 that he had in his inside pocket, Charles took it, and in a fit of abstraction abstracted the purse, spending a part of the contents in hilarity at an adjacent bar. The jus tice thought Charles had acted very unpretty and held him in $200 bonds to see what the next grand jury had to say about it. m m i The Manzahita goes to Tillamook rock this morning. She takes out an expert on heating apparatus. The current of air on the rock makes down through the funnels near the lighthouse roof and smokes out the five occupants. A new radiator will be rigged so that the seagirt occu pants can warm themselves without being suffocated. To do that will take ten days. When that is done the Manzanita will steam away for San Francisco, where she will go into the dry dock for general overhauling and repairs to her hull and machin ery. PERSONAL MENTION. Sam'l Arndt returned from Port land, yesterday. Sheriff Ross is confined to his room by serious illness. G. N. Barrows, of Knappton, wa3 in the city yesterday. J. J. The Misi says there is a bus picion of foul play, as he was known to have about $200 in his possession. Dr. A. L. Fulton has changed his place of residence. He now lives where his brother, C. W., formerly lived, on the south side of Court street, west of Olney, two doors from the southwest corner of those streets. Biiclilcn's Arnica Salve.
