Note the adv't of the fancy goods store of Miss Nora Rappleyea. Miss Emma Warren's private school will reopen on Tuesday January 3rd. The Idaho arrived from Alaska yesterday; the Columbia sailed for San Francisco. A merry crowd went over on the Electric last evening to dance at Hi ram Gray's at Skipanon. C. Leinenweber returned from Port land yesterday, having adjusted the insurance business in connection with the A. B. Field. The battalion in charge at Fort Oanbywill leave for San Francisco next Tuesday. After that it will be entirely deserted. Send The Astokiax for '83 to your friends and acquaintances. It will cost you but $2 for the entire year, and will save you writing many a let ter. That salvation army cornet player is getting wuss and wuss. Zetterman has the drum down fine and will soon graduate. We could better spare a better crowd. Our readers will elsewhere find the complete returns of the recent spe cial election in convenient shape for reference. It is official and worthy of preservation. The British ship Abercom is due. She has several hundred tons steel rails aboard, which, when received, will be used in laying track around the Albina car shops. At the open meeting of the Eescue club to-morrow ovening some of the best musical talent in the city will as sist in making the entertainment pleasing and attractive. Peter Johnson made a holy show of himself at the O. B. & N. dock and elsewhere yesterday, and when brought before Judge Jewett in the afternoon it was found necessary to fine him S3(X Since seeing "Vim" presented by Neil Burgess the other night, 'tis said that thero'are three mothers-in-law in town who have, in the language of the ancient Athenians, "taken a tum ble to themselves." W. E. Harris, advance agent of the Koyce & Lansing Musical Comedy company and Swiss bell ringers, was in town yesterday. The company that he represents will be hero Janu ary 6th and 7th, and are said to be very good. From Long Beach come reports of a big tide there last Tuesday, which covered the camping ground and knocked things galley west, so to speak. The water came up the shore as far as Tinker's hotel, and out to sea the ocean was foaming at a great rate. P. H. Harris died at his home in Cheney, W. T., last Friday, at the age of 84 years. Deceased wt?s born in Philadelphia in 1803, and afterward moved to Ohio, where he resided un til 1851, when he moved to Oregon. He had many friends throughout the state, to whom his death will be a source of regret. Frank Lewis, of Corvallis, the cele brated foot-racer, at whose marriage in California, some months ago, an irate father and a shotgun were prom inent, was in Portland last week. He left his wife in California, and she fol lowed him, when he disappeared, leaving her in Portland without monev or friends. At a meeting at the Y. M. C. A. rooms last evening resolutions were adopted endorsing the general secre tary, Mr. G. A. Charnock, thanking him for his labors on behalf of the as sociation, tendering him a call to re main as general secretary of the asso ciation at a salary of $900 a year, and promising to aid him by prayer, help and counsel. The arrival of the expected railroad gentlemen appears to be delayed, it being probable that, having left San Francisco according to programme, they are traveling leisurely and view ing the country. By special appoint ment yesterday was a perfect day, a small segment of summer having been secured. It is to be hoped that when they do arrive the weather will be equally gracious. Some big swans are appearing in the market and find ready sale. Swans and salmon bellies are very filling at the price. Geese continue comparatively scarce, and ducks are at a premium. Oysters have "riz" in price and, like eggs, can only be in dulged in by the wealthy. Soup bones and sausage are steady at usual quo tations, and potatoes and turnips are procurable at former rates. Articles incorporating the North Pacific Lumber company were filed last Monday with the Multnomah county olerk by Donald Mackay, N. Versteeg, Robert D. Inman, John Paulson, Si L. Therkelson. The cap ital stock is 8250,000. The objects of the company aro to engage in sawing and manufacturing lumber, making boxes, sash, door and blinds, building of vessels and saw mills, etc. The Seattle l'orst Intelligencer hears that Capt. Woody Spraguo is coming around here with the tug Mogul to tow on the Columbia river bar. The reporter quotes Capt. Gil- more as saying that Sprague told him that as soon as he heard of tne Wiz ards leaving here to go to the Sound he would start for the Columbia right away. As the WizanVs agents hero have so far heard nothing of her go ing away, the matter is at present somewhat indefinite. J. V. Hamilton and Frank Dav, late editors of the Garfield, W. TM Enterprise, are pronounced by that paper as boss bilks, smart and un principled, and everyone is cautioned to look out for them. They appear to be around taking a census of the fools. By the way, talking of bilks, while in Seattle last week we saw Jas. Cook. He is a good specimen of that kind of men who bring disci edit on the newspaper business. He is smooth, tricky, and a third-class fraud. The mendacious correspondent from Port Townsend for the Portland Journal of Commerce has the same dish of lies from that place in the San Francisco Daily Commercial News, of the 25th, asserting that the Carrie is. Lake was wrecked near the entrance to the Columbia river, and the captain and crew murdered. The S. F. paper has wide circulation and as a matter of simple justice The Astorian asks it to give emphatic and unequivocal denial to that state ment. Wo assert it to be a lie, a ma licious and malignant lie, and no re spectable newspaper should retain the creature who wrote it in any capacity. Capt TJ. B. Scott has sixteen men at work building a steamer to take the place of the TelepJione. The work is being done at Smith Bros.' yard under the personal supervision of Capt Scott The burned steamer was 170 feet long and 28 feet beam. Capt Scott tells an Orcgonian re porter that the new boat will have more power, more speed, a larger cabin and larger state rooms thau the old Telephone, and will not "take dust" from anybody's boat She will be finished about the middle of March. The alterations made in the steam er Umatilla have proved so satisfac tory to the Oregon Improvement company that the sister ship Walla Walla will be remodeled into a pas senger steamer. She will be practic ally rebuilt from the water line; cab ins of elegant finish constructed, nn other deck built on her, and will be, when finished, in all respeots the eqnal of the Umatilla, which is re garded as one of the finest passenger steamer on the Pacific. The Walla Walla's engines and boilers will re ceive attention, and she will leave the works a first-class steamer. Last Evenins'fi Ball and Festival. Though a new organization, the Scandinavian Benevolent society is second to none in zeal and efficiency and the members have made a suc cess of all that they have hitherto un dertaken. Yesterday afternoon they had a Christmas festival and ball at Boss' opera house. The children's part of it was from four in the afternoon to eight in the evening, during which time the large and beautiful Christ mas tree, beautifully lighted and splendidly covered with appropriate fruit, was the center of attraction. Every child attending received a gift, and many juveniles were the happy recipients of gifts from off the tree. In the evening there was a grand ball, the Western Amateur band or chestra furnishing the music and all present enjoying themselves to the utmost Praise is duo tho committe of ar rangements, consisting of Aug. Dan ielson, M. Olsen, Erick Johnson, Frank Eklund, and J. M. Olsen, for their untiring efforts to make tho en tiro entertainment a success. Last "Wednesday Evening's Social. There was considerable fun at tho social at Mrs. E. C. Holden's last Wednesday evening, principally caused by the praiseworthy efforts of the attendant gentlemen to finish hemming the aprons which fell to their lot to sew. Tho first prize was awarded to Mr. J. T. Boss, the one farthest from the first to Mr. Barker, after which Mr. E. C. Holden sold tho completed aprons, the one made by the prettiest girl in the room bringing S4. A handsome supper was served and all present had an enjoyable time. The Sale at the Fort. Tho forage, fuel and a lot of accu mulated truck was sold at auction by E. C. Holden at Fort Canby yester day afternoon. The bidding was spir ited and the stuff realized about $1,250. Lieut. Eastman put in all that was saleable, and there is little left besido the guns and quarters. The fort is now thoroughly disman tled and after Tuesday next will be entirely deserted. ffoticc To all members of Beaver Lodge No. 33 I. O. O. F., and sojourning Brothers. The Final Trip Over the Siskiyous Hade: History of the 0. & V. Coaches. The last trip of the stages on tho line between Ashland and Siskiyou was made Friday, and the veteran driver, Dan Cawley, who drove tho first coach of tho old lino over the Siskiyous, claimed the honor of com ing into Ashland with the last conch, says the Ashland Tidings. The other drivers of the trip were Messrs. A. Smith, Charlie Laird and Frank Ho vey. The first stage wa3 run between Yreka and Jacksonville in 185G, mak ing three trips per week. Tho Cali fornia Stage Co. (Geo. Thomas, Supt) were its proprietors and Dan Cawley was its first driver. For a year after the stage started the mail was carried on horseback by other parties, and arrived at Jacksonville only once every two weeks. In 1858 a daily stage wa3 run through from Portland to Sacramento. In 1872, Barlow, San derson & Co. secured the mail con tract on the route between the C. & O. and O. & C. railroads, and Col. W. S. Stone assumed the superintenden cy of the line, with headquarters at Yreka. Col. Stone has had the man agement of tho business dur ing the past few months and will wind up its affairs here. Dan Caw ley has been driving at different times on the line, mostly south of Yreka of late years, and since March last has been one of the regular driv ers coming into Ashland from the C. fc O. terminus. As the six-horse stage coach, im posing in its day, crowded off the trail the saddle-horse and pack-mule conveyance, it in turn is driven off tne biskiyou route by the big engines and sumptuous palace cars of the Southern Pacific railroad. The trip over the mountains between Califor nia and Oregon will no longer bo in vested with a romantic flavor of ex citing rides down the steep grades, stories and scenes of highway robbery and views of grizzly bear tracks in the road. But threo dollars of tho coinage of 1801 are known to be in existence. Two are accounted for, and the other ono is missing. Tho value of the missing coin, according to the last numismatic circular, is oouu. oo val uable a chain cannot remain long out ol existence, anu n is turning up in several adjacent towns. One was re cently received here, but not genuine. A stranger arrived in town, putnp at a leading hotel, and, after a few days' visit, got hard up. He had the miss ing dollar of 1801, and was willing to part with it at a sacriGce. A mer chant gave him $100 for it, and then sent it to tho treasury department at "Washington. The officials there dis covered what the purchaser hadn't that tho dollar had been coined in 1S01 and tho date altered. JV. Y. JIail and Express. Two Boys and a Bear. Two bad sons of Farmer Peck, who lives on the upper Hornet, creek I. T., went hunting on a recent Sunday. They found a bear cub and shot it Then they came upon a full-grown cin namon bear and Grcd at and missed it. The bear started for the boys, and the eldest, aged 1G years, stood his ground and with a second shot broke bruin's leg. Tho animal didn't stop. The boy clubbed his gun and tried to strike tho bear, who knocked the gun from his hands and caught his arm in hi3 mouth. Then the younger bov, aged 12 years, ran up, and, putting his gun to tho bear s ear, blew his brains out and saved his brother's life. Why 31 rs. WhilHkcns Thought So. "I do believe,'' said Mrs. Whilli kens, as she laid down the paper after carelessly glancing over the social column; "I do believe that this writ ing up every littlo party is abomin able. Here's a column about the the reception at Mrs. Wheedle's last week, all the names and everything. It's simply disgusting." Afer she goes her lady friend takes up the paper and also looks carelessly at the social column. "Yes. There it is. I thought so. Every name of every woman who was ther-e.vecept Mrs. Whilhkens."
