Joseph Wood, says the Chehalis Yidctle, gathered his cattle in from the woods two weeks ago, owing to the danger from falling limbs and trees, and was somewhat surprised to find them beef fat. These cattle were in much better condition than those which had been running on clover pasttir all summer, which may be partly ac counted for from the fact that the past season has been rather dry. The wood pasture is in excellent condition and would keep the stock in good flesh throughout the winter without feeding a particle of hay, wore it not for the dan ger arising from the falling of trees. It is difficult for east ern people to understind this, and yet similar reports have been brought to us from other farmers in this section, all prosperous and reliable men. We would not pub lish a report like the above did it not come from a reliable source. Brown was abusing Smith vio lently on the sidewalk one night. 'Jones, who was Smith's friend, heard it from an upper Avindow anu yeneu to amttli, "Kiiock mm down!" The next day Jones and Smith met. "Why "didn't you knock that man down?'' asked Jones. "I hollered to you to do it." "Yes," replied Smith, "and I would have hollered the same thing had I been up where j'ou were.' The money-lenders of Sacramen to must be a very bad lot, the local papers asserting that thev require a man to relinquish all hopes of heaven, mortgage his wife and chil dren, and give the lender the earth, with a barbed-wire fence around it.
