Actiug manager Mathews of the Grand opera house, has traveled ex tensively throughout the United Stales with iheatrical companies. He says; "In my trips through the west I have frequently had to stop at some of the larger hotels for a week at a time, and until the last two or three trips invariably had trouble in obtain ing good attendance from the waiters in tho hotel resturant Formerly I feed them at the first meal, and was liberal, but I found that toward tho middle of the week their attentions would grow beaulifnlly less, until fin ally I would have to wait upon my self. I have at last discovered a rem edy for the evil and think seriously of having it patented. "At the be ginning of the first meal, should the attentions of the waiter prove satis factory, I quietly take a five-dollar bill from my pocket, crease it across tho center and with a penknife cut it into two pieces. At the end of the meal I present the waiter with one half, plac ing the other in my pocketbook, with the remark that if his attentions con tinue satisfactory I will at the end of the week present him with tho other half. This scheme works like a charm." Worth Knowing. Mr. W. II. Morgan, merchant.
