PI KEB Presents Having Pi Us THAT GEAY'S HAEBOE MILL. And the Pacific Pine Lumber Company. Post Intelligencer, 24. A prominent sawmill man on the sound, who was on a visit to Seattle yesterday, in conversation with a reporter, said: c;I notice the Post-Intcllifjcnccr has had considerable to say of late about the Pacific Pine Lumber company and its project to build a larjje mill at Gray's llarbor, and I am glad of it, for when the facts are known the people will sec what we are doing to keep Puget sound in the lead as a lumber producing section. There are some points in regard to this matter that have never been explained in print, and I will tell you what they arc. In the first place, as ou know, the Pacific Pine Lumber company is a corporation organized under the the laws of California for the pur pose of combining and uniting the sawmill interests of Puget sound under one head, and to prevent the mills from cutting one anoth er's throats in the markets of San Francisco. Every large sawmill on Puget sound has a representa tive on the board of directors, and all the lumber cut on Puget sound for the San Francisco market is handled by the Pine Lumber com pany. The statement in this morning's Post-IntclUgcnccr that the Simpsons, who have mills at Gray's Harbor, have refused to join the association, is true, but that is not the worst of it. At present they have the largest mill on Gray's harbor, and get their' logs at from one dollar to a doliar and a half a thousand cheaper than the Puget sound mills. For instauce when we are paying the loggers of Puget sound 7 per thousand the Simpsons are only paying 5.50 per thousand for similar logs i on Gray's harbor, with this ad vantage in their favor they jumped into the San Francisco market and commenced cutting and slashing prices at a great rate. "We saw that the only salvation for the Pu get sound mills was to reduce the price of logs on the Sound or raise the price on Gray's harbor. "We organized a company, backed by ten million dollars if necessary, to build a mill en Gray's harbor, for the purpose of regulating the price How for Hew Year's of logs there to correspond with the price paid on the Sound. We have secured a fine mill site and in the early spring will build a mill with a cutting capacity of at least 200,000 feet per day. When this mill is completed we will issue a notice to all the loggers in tint section of the country that we will pay Puget sound prices for logs, and of course when wc do that the market price is fixed, and the Messrs. Simpson will have to p 13' the same as we do, or else shut down their mills, for loggers are human beings like the rest of us and will sell their timber where l hey can get the highest price for it. My this means we will place the Puget sound mills on an equal footing with any outside concern, and not cut the logger down in his price either. As regards the Simp sons' attempt to get even by send ing a tugboat around to the Sound, that's all moonshine. They are very clever gentlemen, and quite wealthy, but they have no money to throw to the birds. I have no doubt the tug "Wizard is coming, but I do not think the Simpsons have anything to do with her." (The Astoria agents know noth ing of the Wizard's going to the Sound. En. Astobiax.)
