San Diego. Cal., Dec. 6th, 18S7. J Friend Bewen: ' AJ1 my life I have had a desire to see this boasted state of California, I especitilly down here iu the lower part the alleged "Italy of America." Consequently on Kov. Mth I left As toria aud, after 11 brief stay in Port laud, journeyed overland to Sacra mento, where I remained two days, cnllirjff ou Judge Van C eave ot the superior court, an old-time friend. From Sacramento to Los Angeles I crossed as fine a wheat country as you ever saw, but the dust was horri ble and everything seemed bnrniug up. Changing cars at Los Angeles I I came direct here to San Die go and by tho way, let me say, at Colt on the junction of the Santa Fe railroad our train was loaded down with east ern fools, on their way to this land of rocks, hills and sand. Now, then, as to this land of real estate booms. It is one of the most bare-faced, unmitigated swindles ever perpetrated ou au innocent people. The Santa Fe R. It. company is be hind this bunko game with all the available land and when they have unloaded it on the eastern suckers the bottom will drop out of the boom. This country has nothing to back up its boom but climate aud people can't live on that. Back of this town and on all sides, north, east and south, you can see nothing but bald rocks, snow-capped mountains and deserts of 3aud. Hero I see the greasy Mexican living in his floorless adobe, and he is about the only hu man being who speaks well of the country. To-day, the 6th of Dec, while snow is five feet deep in Minne sota, I write here with doors and win dows all open and all about me is a perfect wilderness of flowers. Each day I see hundreds of ladies walking and lonuging in the plaza dressed in white, holding parasols over their heads. These lazy loungers are in the majority here, for they number about ten thousand people wealthy eastern nabobs who came here to speculate and steer clear of the cist ern cold winters. Workingraeu with a trade earn good wages and they are the only ones I cau see who are do ing well. The professions aro .over crowded and mercantile business is but little better than the dullest traf fic in eastern towns. Every other man here is gambling in real estate aud only one in every fifty makes money. In short this is oue of the most overrated places I ever saw and I frankly admit that like uine-tenths of new-comers I was dis gusted at San Diego before I got within one hundred miles of the town. Newspapers here claim 25,000 people; at all events the town is not one bit larger than Astoria, and the boasted population is a floating one, willing to float out just as soon as they can get money to do so. Now, to compare Astoria and your town and adjacent country with lower Cal Cal ieornia: Well, there is no more com parison between these two countries than there is between rock-bound Alaska an 3 Paradise. Clatsop and Pacific counties have as good farm ing land a3 you can find in any east ern state, and the timber lands there are without parallel. That country could back up a boom with resources that are inexhaustible. This country has nothing to back up its booms but climate, salt water, rock and sand, and fit only to spend money in and furnish homes for men of wealth. Every poor man wants to steer clear of this neck of tho woods. Have not seen all of this country not all, of course but have already been in all parts of this county and hobnobbed with the cattle barons and the ranch ers, and taking their views as a basis, can speak with assurance that my statement is a correct one. Now, that I have seen the boomy land of real estate bunko steerers I am satisfied well enough to remain out of tho state all tho rest of my life. I will return by steamer to Astoria as I would rather look at salt water and sea gulls than to again view this land of mountains, rocks, sand and tree less, barren, dreary waste, begging paupers, brass bands and bunko real estate men. Very respectfully, Reeh Kanaoa. In cases of severe and sudden colds, Ayer's Cherry Pectoral, if used according to directions, is a sure cure. Ask for Ayer's Alma nac.
