The human race instinctively mores south and west. Tho Pheuiciau mer chants, two thousand years ago, sailed their vessels west. Commercfl, t population and power followed in tneir track. Tho groas Alexander with his army, with a following of merchants, took an eastward courae, but it was to open a channel for the merchandise of the east to find its way westward. Ancient Phoenicia, as a commercial power, reached its limit auu laded out as a commercial cen ter. Carthnrjo absorbed her depart ing vigor, aud in the lapse of time she passed the sway of trade to Ten ice and Genoa, and their wind com ing to and end, Holland occupied the the seat of honor and power; thence to England, the present controlling power of the world in trade and finance. Where next? As a reply we will accept the prophecy of King George the III., in 1775. In a meet ing of his cabinet to discuss the hos tile attitude of the AmerioaR colo nies, he said that 'if the colonies, were allowed their independence, they would, in the lapse of time, un dermine Great Britain. If the phi losophy of shift and drift, history vouches for iu the past, is to hold the sway of tho world, King George tho III. was a true prophet, and En gland must pass tho honors of con trolling the commerce and finance of the world to tho United States. To-day our Nation's growth and rapid advancement is a philosophical wonder, and to tho American citizen a matter of pride. From the dawn of man s history to tho present day, his present imnulso has been t work from coarse to fine, from few to many, to prenaro the earth for a great place on which to build a groat em pire. English statisticians inform us that tho United States can support sixteen million people. Should this point ever bo reached, and wo bnild rail roads in tho proportion of to-day, wo should havo threo million and three hundred thousand miles of railroad, and their roadbed wonld subtract from agricultural uses as much land as somo of tho kingdoms of Enropo contain. Our continent perpetuates tho westward bent of its citizens similarly to that of Europe. Our census informs us how many and lho speed that marks this immense march to the Pacific: a genial climate. fertile roil, vast rivers, tho finest mountain scenery in tho world, with the persuasive allurements of the Pa cific ocoau and the island, far beyond, of spico aud poetry; and teeming isl auds are irresisttblo attractions to our own continent and that of Eu rope. We feal quite sure of a popula tion of five hundred million, not many generations in adTauco. Of this num ber wo should allot at least a hun dred aud fifty million from Alaska to lower California, beyond tho moun tains The fignres amazo us, but the realities of a national growth agitato the mind beyond any of tho functions of the imagination. In thisgreat.be wildering fntura who knows bnt?hat moro steamers will be found on the Pacific than th Atlantic, and that tho simmering procsas of mixtures of Asia and America in kinship will not come in. Look at Europe. The ice man and the spica men mat and im proved tho whole. Tho earth and the racas are a parpotual wonderment. a noth about othbu MATrnns. It is Boston's social period. Wealth, alucatiou and tasto contribute to the happiness of Boaton folks. Our city is so compaot and small in area that the room is scant for much mischief. In religion wa once thought strongly, but are much altered now; ia politics, an elevated observation above un Bound arguments, and bad voting, the the city is partial to. Our schools stand in the foreground of shows. Wo mean that truth and right shall be tho base of our structure; indeed, truth and justice ara tsa preponder ant of the world. W. S. In cases of severe and sudden colds, Aycr's Cherry Pectoral, if used according to directions, is a sure cure. Ask for Ayer's Alma nac.
