" 'Twas tho night before Christmas,
and all through the hou3e not a
creature was stirring, not even a
meuse: the stockings were hung by
the chimney with care, in hopes that
St. Nicholas soon would be there."
To-night the good old practice of
hanging up tho stocking for bounti

gifts will be observed, and bitterly
disappointed, indeed, will bo the boy

A physician in extensive practice

should you say, of those people who
send a servant flying to your office
with, 'come right away!' or make the
telephone jingle with, 'Come as quick
as you can!' are suffering chieflv from
fear nnd imagination." Stroking his
beard, the learned medicine replied
"Well I might eafely put it at two-
thirds. When I arrive, tho mere an
nouncement that it is nothing serious
allays the fear. While I am writing
the prescription and chatting pleas
antly on some other topic, the last
stage of convalescence has been near
ly reached, and when I say, in an as
suring tone, Take this and you will
be all right in tho morning,' tho case
is settled."

New York, Dec. 23. James Miller
a real estate dealer, 50 years old, was
found lying dead this morning on
the floor of his room. Beside him
lay his wife, unconscious and dying.
On her face and head were several
deep gashes. It is snpposed that the
couple were attacked and beaten by
robbers. The discovery was mado by
the letter carrier who knocked at
their door. He received no answer,
but heard labored breathing from
within that caused him to think that
something was wrong. He called a
policeman who broke open the door.
The furniture of the room and tho
kitchen utensils and crockery were
broken and fragments were strewn
over the floor in every direction.
Miller was wealthy and the deed was
evidently prompted by cupidity.

CAUSED BY BAD DRAINAGE.
New York, Dec. 23. A Washing

Albany stato that the illness of ex
secretary Manning was caused in a
great measure by bad drainage in tho
