Czj ggitgidtimtittdmkmamaimtBmmmkimmi fec gUg gwrtodau. ASTORIA. OREGON: SATURDAY.. .DECEMBER 21. 18S7 ASTORIA'S NEEDS. The needs ol Astoria are many and manifest; they are mental and ma terial First among her mental needs stand. faith. "We have too many croatera, men whose intestines are tied in knoLs, and who are chronic prowlers. If a man is enterprising they discourage him: if ho reaches out they sit down on him, and if he fails, their judgment is confirmed, and they croak "I told you so." "We need more men with faith to stand these eff: men who have abiding confidence in Asto ria's future: men who can realize her coming greatness, and who can grand ly hasten that future's splendid reali zation. It's a slow process waiting for funerals. "The good die young, but they whose hearts are dry as sum mer's dust, burn to the socket" There's nothing good or bad, in this world, but thinking makes it so, and if Astorians, old and young, one and all, would but think how grand a fu ture can bo ours, and work for that and with that intent, it could and would be ours. Another mental need is confidence and mutual aid. There is a lack of fellowship, of public spirit Purely as a matter of cold business it pays to bo sociable, to stand in with one another, to work together for the common good, tho city's interest, the mutual prosperity of tho community. In help ing others you help yourself. In aid ing your neighbor you are aidingyour own fortune to a greater degree than you would by freezing him out, or try ing to build your prosperity on the ruins of his. Even selfish, scheming men seo this and aro willing to help their neighbors a hundred dollars' worth if by doing that they help them selves a thousand dollars' worth. We aro not preaching flabby senti ment, nor goody-goody gush, but ar guing that Astoria's needs require mu tual support, public spirit, neighborly aid and co-oporativo effort, and in this we are either right or wrong, tho facts being as they are. Self assertion, individual effort, are not to be decried; at best or worst, life is "every man for himself," and we would not give a cent a dozen for men who find it necessary to lean for support on others. That is not tho point Tho thing is to talk for tho town, to have a good word in place of a bad one for it, to show a ready spirit of assistance to any one and every thing that will help the town to grow and improve, and in each one doing all he can in that direction lies tho fulfillment of one of Astoria's greatest needs. Wo need waking up. However un welcome, it is evident that Astoria is not up with her sister cities in the race for supremacy, in the honorable contest and generous rivalry for ad vancement in wealth and greatness. Astoria is off the line. The tide of travel sweeps by. "Where hundreds and thousands of busy strangers, pros pective investors, wealthy home seek ers throng the streets of contiguous cities, scarcely any come here. It is our own fault that such a state of af fairs obtains. To allow this to con tinue is to admit that we want noth ing better, and are content with the little we have. Astoria must awake to a realization of her position, her possibilities and tho necessary means of getting what all agree to bo desira ble. Tho first requisites are harmony, unity, public spirit and a settled pur pose to help tho town by talking for it and spreading in every possible way tho true, reliable statement of the advantages, attractions and re sources that wo possess. Those who won't do that aro afraid of compe tition and look at every new comer as a possible competitor and disturber of their slumbrous content This In a Fn-t. In P. J. Goodman'. Sergt Griffin, of the sigual Fcrvice, called for bids this week for the re pair of the cablo across the river, the 22nd inst being set as the date on which bids would have to be in. Tho meagerness of the amount appropri ated S500 wonld not permit of any one doing the work, and consequent ly there was not one bid put in. If a bidder could make an attempt wiMi a steamboat and necessary apparatus, and be paid for what was done, prob ably bids would bo put in: but the contract calls for the party doing the work to put the cablo in" successful and satisfactory operation, and this no one could think of doing for S50J. The cable is at present useless be tween Forts Stevens and Canby. The importance of the service was con ceded years befoio being tardily ac knowledged by the government in building tho line, and for nearly two years it has been out of use by reason of a break some distance from shore. ' Every dictate of justice demands that the cable be put in working trim, and while economy is a good thing, such niggardly miserliness as the government in this case evinces is contemptible. Gen. Greely. of the signal Fervice, has done all be can, the Astoria cham ber of commerce and Sergt. Griflin have made suitable representation of tho needs, and there tho matter stands. A Gold Find in New Hrnnirk. One day last week, says a Halifax dispatch, while William MeConnick was wandering on tho beach at St. Martins, N. B., ho stumbled over a piece of metal resembling a pot, from which the action of tho sea had re moved some stones. On digging down his eyes wero rewarded with the sparkle of goid. Ho carried tbe prize home. It is alleged that the total value of tbe find is S-J0.0GU. On ly two perfons are acquainted with the location of the treasure. One of these said it was in tho shape of Spanish guineas, bearing dato of 17G5.
