C'J ASTORIA, OREGON, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 2, 1887. VOL. XXIX, NO. 145. PRICE MVE CENTS. 1887. Cash, and One Price. 1888. i- LOOK Having just completed the opening of our useful as well as our ornamental, our plain as well as our decorated ware, we are now prepared for the trade in all its branches. Buying our goods direct from the manufacturers, and always paying cash for them, we not only get them at regular trade prices, as cheap as San Francisco or Portland dealers can buy, but we also get the cash discount; and if any other dealer thinks he can undersell us. he has only to start in, and we will agree that "the longest pole shall knock down the persimmons." We guarantee our patrons that for quality and quantity our prices shall be than any other house in town. Our sales of Christmas goods have been large, for which we return thanks to our customers, but we still have a full and varied stock of as unique and beautiful goods as can be found in town, and as we have said relative to other goods, we will not be undersold. The expressions of admiration and satisfaction that have been made by those that -have examined or bought from us have been gratifying and assure us that our efforts to please the Astoria public are ap preciated. We shall continue as in the past to try and merit the generous patronage bestowed upon us. Call and see our Dinner Sets, Tea Sets, Toilet Sets; in great variety, Crystal Ware of all kinds, Lamps, either hanging, stand, or hall in large stock, and in short, anything you want to buy. Remember also that we are still in the grocery and provision trade and arc ready to supply you with anything you want in those lines as cheap as the same quality of goods can be sold by any other dealer. Manu facturers of lumber on thp Parilir coast have sent to member ut 'In Pacific coast delegation one of t Li ablest statements received from any part ol the country against re duction of the tariff on lumber. The petition says that if lumber is placed on the free trade list it will at once most unfavorably affect the prosperity of the Pacific coast, and be just so much an increase to that of British Columbia where lumber lands are given to mills at the rate of 20 cents per acre, and which are more accessible to wa ter, and where labor is cheaper, owing to large employment of Chinese. There are in California, "Washington and Oregon lflO saw mills, employing over 3.500 men, without counting the crews of the many vessels engaged in freight ing lumber. The petitioners state that taking the tariff off of lumber would at once give the entire bus iness to British Columbia. The petition also recites that if the tariff is taken off of lumber all the citizens in the trade of the Pacific coast, employers and em ployes, will demand in justice, that the duty on iron, cordage and other things which go to make up the cost of manufacturing lumber be also repealed, in order that if the lumber interest is to be placed in full and open competition with the mills in Canada, the conditions of cost and manufacture ma' be also equalized. Richard K. Fox refuses to have the Kilrain-Smith contest a draw after 106 rounds, and says: "The fight must be finished. If Smith refuses I shall claim the belt, the world's championship and the stakes for Kilrain." Also the fol lowing to his representative, Wm. E. Harding: "A draw won't do. Ihe men must meet to a finish. If Smith refuses, I shall claim the belt, the world's championship and the stakes for Kilrain. I am will ing to back Jack against John L. Sullivan after this is settled for from $5,000 to 10,000 and the belt." Ayer's Sarsaparilla braces up the system; purifies and invigor ates. Invalids need it. THIS ! ! . L. I don't tuink the new railroad hurts us as Orecon is devel oping rapidly, and there is room lor both, with the Southern ra cific new arrangements about freight going into effect January 1, the reduction of freight will not be much, as freights are now very low.
