Having just completed the opening of our useful as well, as our ornamental, our plain as well as our
decorated ware, we are now prepared for the trade in all its branches. Buying our goods direct from
the manufacturers, and always paying cash for them, we not only get them at regular trade prices, as
cheap as San Francisco or Portland dealers can buy, but we also et the cash discount; and if any other
dealer thinks he can undersell us. he has only to start in, and we will agree that "the longest pole shall
knock down the persimmons." We guarantee our patrons that for quality and quantity our prices shall be
than any other house in town. Our sales of Christmas goods have been large, for which wc return thanks
to our customers, but we still have a full and varied stock of as unique and beautiful goods as can be
found in town, and as we have said relative to other goods, we will not be undersold.
The expressions of admiration and satisfaction that have been made by those that have examined or
bought from us have been gratifying and assure us that our efforts to please the Astoria public are ap
preciated. We shall continue as in the past to try and merit the generous patronage bestowed upon us.
Call and see our Dinner Sets, Tea Sets, Toilet Sets, in great variety, Crystal Ware of all kinds,
Lamps, either hanging, stand, or hall in large stock, and in short, anything you want to buy.
Remember also that we are still in the grocery and provision trade and are ready to supply you with
anything you want in those lines as cheap as the same quality of goods can be sold by any other dealer.
So remember the place to buy is at

"Watch the Store Account.
Watch closely your transactions
at tne store, mis mine canon n
"running account" is a very la .inq
in affair; and farmers who Wcty .
running account are apt to over
run the amount they take in, and
at settling up they find themselves
considerably behind, or indebted
to the merchant, when they per
haps are solacing themselves that
they were at least even, if not
something to their credit. There
are two reasons for this mistake,
one being that no account is kept
by the farmer; he takes butter,
eggs, etc., to the merchant who
fills whatever order for goods the
farmer wants, charges him for the
tame, aud then allows him for his
produce just whatever he, the
merchant, deems them worth. The
farmer picks up his boxes and
baskets, and drives home, gener
ally without knowing the debit
and credit of the transaction.
Again, when most people have
credit, they often buy compara
tively useless articles, or else
things that could have been dis
pensed with, at least for awhile,
and no one will look as closely to
the kind or qualitv of what he
buys, or be so particular about the-
price, as wheu the cash is to be
counted down. And another im
portant thing about it is, mer
chants, aud especially country
merchants, like the cash; true, we
all do, for that matter, but when
a cash man comes into the store,
he has better goods offered him at
less prices, and often a moderate
discount is made on the bill by the
merchant, all of which makes a
saving to the cash buyer. The
moral then to be drawn from this,
so to express it, is either to keep an
account of all your dealings, both
buying and selling, or sell and buy
on the cash system strictly. Ex.
The real thoughtful wife is now
in a quandary whether to ask her
husband to buy her a sealskin
cloak or a ton of coal.
Ayer's Sarsaparilla braces up
the system; purifies and invigor
ates. Invalids need it.

The Eeturn of the "Wateis.8
A recent phenomenon in central
Illinois puzzles scientific aud oth
er people. After weeks of drought,
the streams and wells becoming
exhausted, abundant water sud
denly appeared, without rain or
other visible source of supply.
"Water flowed freely in the streams,
and even the shallowest wells were
replenished. "Where this water
came from and the cause of its
sudden appearance are mysteries
which no man can find out. Some
religious people believe it was an
answer to prayer. It is probable
that the effect was produced by a
subterranean disturbance similar
to that of an earthquake shock.
