It may not be generally known that hatching-machines have re cently been invented in the Paris lying-in hospitals for the saving of lufants prematurely born or other wise deficient in vitality. Thesys tem appears to have been emi nently successful. The object of the machine is to supply the weak little things with tbe heat neces sar' to attain to strength and ma turity. New-born babies, weigh ing from two to two and a half pounds, the average weight, and which were condemned to early death, have been placed in these machines, and' in a short time have come out strong ind healthy. The apparatus is similar to the egg hatching machine. It is in the form of a large wooden box, and is divided into two compartments; one is filled with warm water, and the other contains a basket that is lined with wadding, into which the infant is deposited. The lid is supplied with a glass pane to al low the movements of the little in mate to be watched. The ma chine is under the constant sur veillance of a nurse, who reports to the medical director the various phases of incubation. Dr. Pinard, of the Lariboisere hospital, and Dr. Tarnier, of the Maternite, have several of these machines working under their care at the present mo ment.
