CV the g&Ujj IMiomu; ASTORIA. OREGON: SATURDAY .....DECEMBER 17, 1S87 WHY, OF COURSE. 'Wheat is worth more at Tacotaa, be cause it is all 5 conU por CGntnl nearer the British market. This nearness can bo overcome by a redaction of port charges and expenses here, by a deeper river chaunol and by better transporta tion facilities from the interior. But if these thines are not provided the port is Roinc to losa business, and lose it rap idly." The above cxcerpi, from a dis discussionof the -wheat situation, in tho commercial column of the Orego nian of the ICth, shows by applica tion some good reasons wliy Astoria is the proper and natural point from which to sliip the exports foreign, from the Columbia river basin, and it shows plainly the folly of trying to drag ships one hundred miles inland against a strong current and over bars and shoals to get a cargo that could be floated down to them -without delay and trouble. If Portland merchants arc afraid they are going to "lose business, and lose it rapidly,'' by competition with the Sound, they had bettor arrange to load flour and wheat on ships at Astoria, the natural seaport, which they can do, and place it on board cheaper than cmx possibly bo done over the Xorthern Pacific railroad to the Sound, and thu3 keep tho commerce in the Columbia river where it belongs. Shipmasters, if given their choice, would certainly prefer to come to As toria where disasters to shipping so rarely occur. Let tho effort and ex pense that is now spent in trying to take the ocean to Portland be spent in establishing the cheapest means of taking her commerce to tho ocean at Astoria. Then Portland will real izo a reasonable percentage of tho benefits derived as compared with tho hopeless futility of her present effort, and there need be no fear of ruinous rivalrv from the Sound. Senator Fabwelii's bill to regu late immigration provides that any immigrant who shall come from a foreign port to any port within the United States shall before being per mitted to land exhibit a certificate from the United States consul for the port of clearance of said vessel, slat ing that said immigrant is not a pau per, idiot, or insane person, and that he is possessed of sufficient means to support himself for a period of six months. Any master of any vessel who shall attempt to land any immi grant who has not first procured the certificate herein provided for shall be guilty of misdemeanor and upon con viction be punished by a fine not exceeding $1,000 for each person so found without such certificate, and may also be imprisoned for a term not exceeding one year. It is said of Mrs. John Jacob Astor, who died last Monday night in New York, that her end was peaceful and painless. She had always regarded wealth as a trust. Her chanties were numerous and unostentatious, and their full extent will probably never be known. All of the interest of her own fortune and much of the princi pal she devoted to charitable work. There is some opposition at "Wash ington to any proposed tinkering with the Allen land act, but the almost unanimous demand of governors of territories in their reports this year for an exception in favor of allowing aliens to invest in mines will probably have some effect on congress. If the commerce of the Columbia goes down the river to deep water at Astoria, and is there loaded on ships. Portland will get some benefit; but if diverted from its natural channel and taken to the Sound, Portland will get no benefit, and she will ' lose busi ness' all of it Astoria is ''nearer the British market" than any port on the Sound, and Sound ports are admitted to be "five cents per cental nearer the Brit ish market" than Portland. Three hundred persons have bought their holdings of the Duke of Aber corn's estate in Tyrone and Donegal, Ireland, on the basis of twenty years' rent. The amount involved is 300, 000, and the sale reduced the Aber corn estate one-third. St. Jomf remarks that the prohibi tionists will go into the next presiden tial campaign with ardent spirits. Tonne Men of To-day May do XAke wise If They Follow Advice Given. General B. F. Butler being asked for some suggestions on gaining sue cess, stated that when he was a younf lawyer, practicing in Lowell, Mass., a bank president advised, him to take his little deposit and buy real estate, from which he could be deriving some revenue. The general said that he had but little money and was uncer tain as to his future. " Never mind," said the bank president," go to the next public auction of real estate, bid off a lot with a building of some kind on it, pay down what money ytu have and give your promissory notes for the balance. You will come out all right." General Butler says this advice was good. When a man lias obli gated himself, by his notes, to pay money at a certain time, it inclines him to economy. He followed the advice, and in lime became the owner of several parcels of valuable real estate in Lowell. Two classes will not be likely to heed such advice the improvident and the over-cautious. The latter will be apt to say: "It would be all right but for those dreadful prom issory notes. They are always run ning on and if a man falls sick they do not wait for him to get well." There is this danger, of course, but one can make no business ven ture without some risk, and with the knowledge acquired by recent investigations of the cause of most or dinary ailments, and the means ol cure, "one runs little risk from that source. It is now known that most ol the common ailmentshave their origin in deranged kidneys. They are the chief blood purifiers of the system and when disordered a breaking down somewhere is soon inevitable, be cause the poison, which in then healthy condition is eliminated, is carried through the entire system. Put them in order and "health returns. C. D. Dewey, a successful man, president of the Johnston Harvester Company, Batavia, N. Y., gives his experience as follows : In 1882 my health was failing, my head pained me constantly, my ap petite was uncertain, I could not sleep soundly. I attributed this to the extreme pressure of business cares, but I grew worse, and finally was confined to my bed for two months. It seemed as though I would "never recover" my former health. Under the aid of stimulantE I gradually gained strength, so that in a few months I was able to attend to business, but I could walk only with the assistance of a cane, and then in a slow and unsteady manner. I continued somewhat in the same condition until February last, when I used Warner's safe cure. It has cured me. I consider it a valuable remedy and can highly recommend it. Young men have but to use ordi nary prudence, and when any de rangement occurs if they use the same means as did this successful business man, they may feel a con stant assurance of their ability to carry to succeesful conclusion all or dinary business projects including the care of their promissory notes when due.
