Having just completed the opening of our useful as well as our ornamental, our plain as well as our
decorated ware, we are now prepared for the trade in all its branches. Buying our goods direct from
the manufacturers, and always paying cash for them, we not only get them at regular trade prices, as
cheap as San Francisco or Portland dealers can buy, but we also get the cash discount; and if any other
dealer thinks he can undersell us. he has only to start in, and we will agree that "the longest pole shall
knock down the persimmons We guarantee our patrons that for quality and quantity our prices shall be

to our customers, but we still have a full and varied stock of as unique and beautiful goods as can be
found in town, and as we have said relative to other goods, we will not be undersold.
The expressions of admiration and satisfaction that have been made by those that have examined or
bought from us have been gratifying and assure us that our efforts to please the Astoria public are ap
preciated. We shall continue as in the past to try and merit the generous patronage bestowed upon us.

principle, that of taxing the gross
earnings of railroads, was formu
lated into a crude law four years
ago. Despite its palpable defects
it put a large sum of monoy into
the treasuries of the territory and
the various counties in whose
limits railroads have been
constructed and operated. One of
the noticeable defects in the law
is that it does not provide that cit
ies through which r.iihoads pass,
and which, therefore, arc put to
more or less expense because of
the roads, shall receive a part of
the revenue paid by the roads.
Another noticpable defect about
which much hue and cry is raised
is the failure of the law to provide
for securing: revenue from lands
owned by railroads. Another de
fect is that the wording of the law
permits owners of logging roads to
escape taxation of large amounts of
property, on the plea that they pay
a tax on their gross earnings. Many
of the defects were called to the at
tention of the legislature of 1885,
but it failed or refused to correct
them, and as a necessary result
the people became more dissatis
tied and more urgent in their de
mand for the repeal of the law.
iug in.it it would not only be un
just to compel them to do so, but
would be giving the Northern Pa
cific a heavy Gnaucial advantage
over them. There is much reason
in the claim. Should the legisla
ture decide that it is best to re
move the objectionublo features
of the gross earnings tax law by
amendments it would be general
ly considered that it had done a
wise thing.
"WHAT THEY AliK GOOD FOK.
Brndreth's Pills are the best
medicine known.
First They are purely vegetable,
in fact a medicated food.
Secvutl The same dose always
produces the same effect, other
purgatives require increased doses
and finallv cease acting.
Thud They purify the blood.
Fourth They invigorate the diges
tion and cleanse the stomach, and
bowels.
Fifth They stimulate the liver and
carry off vitiated bile and other de
praved secretions.
The first two or three doses tell
the story. The skin becomes clear:
the eye bright : the mind active ; di
gestion is restored; costiveness
cured ; the animal vigor is recruited
and all decay arrested.
In the senate Uibt Thursday a
bill was introduced by senator

repeal the gross earnings tax law.
Since then the councilmen have
been studying what to put
in its place. Two bills have been
introduced. One provides a com
mission of five to be appointed by
the governor. The other proposes
that the territorial auditor and
treasurer shall assess the property
of railroad companies. Each pro
poses to tax the right of way and
all superstructures and buildings
on it. Right here is a stumbling
block. The charter of the North
ern Pacific expressly exempts its
right of way in territories from
taxation. Courts hold that if the
right of ;way is exempt, the rails,
ties, station houses, etc., erected
sources 01 masKa, anu open an
overland commercial route between
the United States, Asiatic Russia
and Japan.
Suppression of the Menses may
be relieved by a dose of Ayer's
Pills, which produce the desired
effect through sympathetic action.
It is a settled fact that there are
large deposits of nitre at Lake
Warner, in southern Oregon.
Several persons are now prepar
ing to locate claims there.
Ayer's Sarsaparilla braces up
the system; purifies and invigor
