-0 VOL. XXIX, NO. 141. ASTORIA, OREGON, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 15, J387. PRICE blVE CENTS. 1887. Cash, and One Price. 1888. LOOK Having just completed the opening of our useful as well as our ornamental, our plain as well as our decorated ware, we are now prepared for the trade in all its branches. Buying our goods direct from the manufacturers, and always paying cash for them, we not only get them at regular trade prices, as cheap as San Francisco or Portland dealers can buy, but we also get the cash discount; and if any other dealer thinks he can undersell us. he has only. to start in, and we will agree that "the longest pole shall knock down the persimmons. We guarantee our patrons that for quality and quantity our prices shall be than any other house in town. Our sales of Christmas goods have been large, for which we return thanks to our customers, but we still have a full and varied stock of as unique and beautiful goods as can be found in town, and as we have said relative to other goods, we will not be undersold. The expressions of admiration and satisfaction that have been made by those that have examined or bought from us have been gratifying and assure us that our efforts to please the Astoria public are ap preciated. We shall continue as in the past to try and merit the generous patronage bestowed upon us. Call and see our Dinner Sets, Tea Sets, Toilet Sets, in great variety, Crystal Ware of all kinds, Lamps, either hanging, stand, or hall in large stock, and in short, anything you want to buy. Remember also that we are still in the grocery and provision trade and are ready to supply you with anything you want in those lines as cheap as the same quality of goods can be sold by any other dealer. So remember the place to buy is at BUSINESS CARDS. TOU.Y H. SMITH. ATTOItNEY AT LAW. Office, Room 1 and 5, m er City JJook Store. G' KO. The rivers and harbors of the .state have icceivcd but little aid from congress, and the possibilities, of the tjtate are almost beyond com putation if their obstructions to navigation were removed. The Columbia river, the great channel of commerce for the northwest, is rendered unnavigable by obstruc tions at the Cascades, above The Dalles, and at Priest rapids. The removal of these would make this grand waterway the artery which would float to the sea the rich agricultural products of a region of country unexcelled by any on the continent and within the last few years settled by an industrious class or farmers. The mouth of the river also needs aid from con gress, for it is the natural outlet of Oregon, "Washington and a por tion of Idaho. The entrances to our harbors should receive atten tion, for, in the near future, as the interior becomes developed, these will become important as shipping points for our products. There is a large surplus in the treasury, and the money could not be ex pended in a more desirable manner than by sending it in circulation among the citizens of the republic. This would be the means of quiet ing the unrest among our labor ing population, and would greatly enhance the substantial wealth of the nation. "We have two compe tent senators in the upper house, and no one doubts the ability and energy of Mr. Hermann in the lower house. It may be expected that the east will almost stand sol id against appropriations in the river and harbor bill; but this ses sion is on the eve ol a presidential contest, and the west and south may be able to bring considerable pressure to bear upon their oppo nents. If corporate influence had less power at "Washington City, the present session of congress might be expected to do some thing to develop the resources of the country and relieve the press ure of hard times; but like the old East India company of England, corporations in this era of our his- THIS ! ! Second The same dose always produces the same effect, other purgatives require increased doses and finally cease acting. Third They purify the blood. The first two or three doses tell the story. The skin becomes clear; the eye bright : the mind active ; di gestion is restored; costiveness cured ; the animal vijjor is recruited and all decay arrested.
