(II vr him ' 'ini n VOL. XXIX, NO. i:K ASTORIA, OREGON. SUNDAY, DECEMBER II, 1887. PRICE IVE CENTS. Jr " , -. r , LOOK N Having just completed the opening of our useful as well as our ornamental, our plain as well as our decorated ware, we are now prepared for the trade in all its branches. Buying our, goods direct from the manufacturers, and always paying cash for them, we not only get them at regular trade prices, as cheap as San Francisco or Portland dealers can buy, but we also get the cash discount; and if any other dealer thinks he can undersell us. he has only to start in, and we will agree that "the longest pole shall knock down the persimmons." We guarantee our patrons that for quality and quantity our prices shall be than any other house in town. Our sales of Christmas goods have been large, for which we return thanks to our customers, but we still have a full and varied stock of as unique and beautiful goods as can be found in town, and as we have said relative to other goods, we will not be undersold. The expressions of admiration and satisfaction that have been made by those that have examined or bought from us haye been gratifying and assure us that our efforts to please the Astoria public are ap preciated. We shall continue as in the past to try and merit the generous patronage bestowed upon us. Call and see our Dinner Sets, Tea Sets, Toilet Sets, in great variety, Crystal Ware of all kinds, Lamps either hanging, stand, or hall in large stock, and in short, anything jou want to buy. Kemember also that we are still in the grocery and provision trade and are 'ready to supply you with anything you want in those lines as cheap as the same quality of goods call be sold by any other dealer. So remember the place' to buy is at BUSINESS CAEDS. JOHN a. SMITH. ATTORNEY AT LAW. Office, Room 4 and 5. over City Book Store. G KO. XOLAXD, ATTORNEY AT LAW. Some grave philosopher many years ago said that a convincing proof of the wisdom of an over ruling Providence was found in the fact that the great rivers were placed in proximity to the great centers of population. Speaker Carlisle appears to be imbued with the spirit of this back handed philosophy, and to carry it out in his appointment of the house com mittee on rivers and harbors. The last committee of his appointment, consisting of fifteen members, em braced but one representative from the whole Pacific coast, as against fourteen from the cast, south and west. When the length of the Pacific coast line is considered and the importance to the entire United States of its rivers and harbors, the injustice of the composition of that committee in the last congress is apparent. Our harbors are al most in a state of nature, our riv ers especially need care and labor bestowed upon them, and our whole seacoast requires much to be done in its behalf; and yet the po sitions on this committee go to members from Kentucky and "West Virginia and Iowa and Ohio and other fresh water states, and our whole coast gets but one rep resentative on the committee. The rivers and harbors of the east, west and south, and particu larly the east, have had large sums of government mony spent on them to improve them, and yet they are constantly crying for more. The representatives of those interests do not seem witling that California and Oregon should share in the distribution of the public money, or that our industrial or commercial facilities should be in creased in any appreciable amount. It is perfectly clear that the ques tion of population is not the only thing to be considered in the for mation of this committee, but that geographical considerations should be given the weight to which they are justly entitled. There is a chance that this coast may be considered of more impor tance now than it ever has before, for several reasens: Chiefly, the enormous immigration here from the older states, and the coming presidential campaign. These two THIS ! ! things may cause the Pacific states to be more thought of and consid ered, and we think that our dele gations can be trusted to &ee that ilue weiffht is given to these fac tor?. When Mr. Carlisle and his advisers think of our increase of population, and, more especially, of our electoral vote, they may be disposed to do justice to the Pa cific coast; not because it is jus tice, but because it will be policy. Still, if we can get what we so much need we will not quarrel with the manner in which we get it. This coast demands at least two members of the river and harbor committee and will be satisfied with nothing less. The importance of our maritime, commercial and industrial interests justifies the de mand, which is certainly not an unreasonable one, and it is to be hoped that our delegations will make a united effort to secure the rightful claims to the Pacific coast in this respect.
