A Portland real estate agent offers to give away lots 25x100 feet in a California townsite, probably worth what thoy cost. Mrs. Elizabeth Graham, a pioneer of Oregon, died at her husband's res idence at Marshland, Columbia coun ty, on the 1st, of paralysis, in the 84th year of her age. By the floods this week, says the Hist, the loggers on the Cowlitz river have lost over $250,000 worth of logs, which broke the boom and went down the Columbia. The telegraph line is in working or der and we are again in instant com munication with the outside world. The military line between here and Fort Stevens will probably be ready for use to-day. The New Bedford board of trade has forwarded to Capt. Healy, of the revenue cutter Sear, an engrossed document conveying a vote of thanks for services rendered by the captain to the whaling fleet during the past season. R. L. Boyle, agent for the North west Fire and Marine Insurance com pany of Portland, yesterday received instruction from that company to subscribe $50 to the fund now being raised to provide a team of horses for Rescue Engine Co., No. 2. The Vancouver Register says that Mrs. Mat lie A. Bridge, of that city, lost a valuable gold bracelet one year ago last October. Four days ago it was found in the centef of a bail of straw, purchased last week for her son's horse. The bale was chosen bap-hazard from fifty others. W. P. Whitcomb, the popular first officer of the Telephone, and John McGillis, the equally popular stew ard of that boat, have bought Frank Fabre's restaurant from him. He goes to France, which he left forty years since, and the new proprietors propose to run the business in first class style. The passenger steamer Yaquinu City is still ashore at Yaquina. There are two tugs there and a third has been sent for from here. "When all three get a good ready, they will take a long pull, and a strong pull, and a pull altogether, and try to yankher off where she-will float. She lies on a sandy beach four miles southwest of Newport Hon. C. Leinenweber yesterday re ceived a dispatch from Capt Geo. A. Bell, of the steamer A. Ji. Field, from Neah bay, saying that that ves sel was at that place badly damaged. She left Nestucca at three o'clock Sat urday afternoon, and was out in all the recent storm. The dispatch con tained no further particulars. Mr. Iieinenweber will leave for there this morning. Complaint was made yesterday that Mrs. Catherine Turk had inhumanly beaten a little girl that in some way had been left to hei tender mercies. Officer Beasley took the child away from her much against her will and placed her at the hospital. The poor little thing bears marks on her ten der flesh that indicate cruel treat ment by some one. Subsequently Mrs. Turk was arrested and gave bonds to appear before Justice Cleve land at two o'clock this afternoon. B. S. Worsley has made arrange ments with the Western Amateur or chestra and they will provide the music for the soirees of the academy .during the winter. Parties attending the soiree this evening at Liberty hall are guaranteed a Bocial and pleas ant evening's entertainment Mr. Worsley has no superior as a mana ger of social gatherings, as the soi rees given in years past have attested. Ovan Falow sky, a photographer, was arrested here last night on a charge of having obscene pictures in his possession. j A number of pictures found in his gallery were displayed m the justice s court this morning. They included photographs of men, women and chil dren of Chico. in a nude stafe, and also photographs of several young la dies of hitherto respectable standing, in vulgar attitudes. Fallowsky plead ed guilty and was sentenced to six months imprisonment. CRIME IN THE REDWOODS. Napa, Dec. 9. Wm. Taylor has been arrested for manslaughter for killing an Italian named Antone, iu the Redwoods. Last Sunday Taylor and Antone had an altercation, and Taylor went to the latter's cabin and shot him. Taylor and Charles Liuge then concocted a story to tell at the inquest Constable Brown's suspi cions were aroused and he visited the scene of the murder, investigated the matter and secured a confession from witness Lange, resulting in a full dis closure of the plot MOST GETS BXlh. Goblet informed president Carnot that owing to the refusal of several statesmen to join him, he is unable to form a cabinet The president has therefore made another application to M. Falierie.s to undertake the task. TROUBLE IN" HALIFAX. New York, Dec. 9. A Halifax spe cial says an attempt was made hist night to blow up one of the principal forts of the city. Serious damage was done, and the soldiers became greatly excited. HOW MUCH DOES TIIAT MEAN? St. Patersburo, Dec 9. Tho czar gave a banquet last night to Knights order of St George, and offered a toast to the health of Emperor Will iam, who is the oldest chevalier of the order. The band played the national Prussian anthem when the czar offered the toast. CONSIDERABLE EFFORT WASTED. Boston? Dec. 9. The citizens of Enterprise landing and Neer City, says the Jlist, have pushed their Nehalem road nearly to completion, they having less than three miles to finish. They expect, with the aid of the Nehalem settlers, the entire road to bo opened before spring. By this route it will be only eighteen miles from the Nehalem to the Columbia river, with a good nat ural route and excellent farming lands adjoining; it is destined to be one of the main thoroughfares of the county in the near future. Ross' opera house was filled last evening, the occasion being a Demo cratic mass convention to nominate a ticket to bo voted for at next Wednes day's election. Dr. Alfred Kinney, chairman of the Democratic county central committee, called tho meet ing to order. On motion he was elected permanent chairman, and R. L. Boyle secretary. The secretary read some suggestions relative to or der of nominations, which were laid on the table. It was, on motion, de cided that the usual order of making nominations bo proceeded with. A resolution was read and unani mously adopted, pledging all who voted to support and work and vote for the nominees of the convention. The chairman declared nominations in order, and C. J. Trenchard nomi nated Judge C. H. Page for mayor. C. J. Curtis moved that the nomina tions close, and that tho secretary be instructed to cast tho unanimous ballot of the convention for Judge C. II. Page for mayor, which was done. Nominations for street superni tendeut being next in order, Thos. Logan, Jacob Gnstafson, J. A. Kin ney, Jno. Wirt, C. H. Bain and J. T. Leasy were placed in nomination. The chair appointed O. Sovey aud H. McCormack judges, and J. T. Ross clerk. The ballot box was placed on a ta ble where the orchestra usually sit, aud a passage way being made, all who were entitled to vote were asked to file in ou the left cast their bal lots and move out to tho right This was done, the casting of the ballots being somewhat slow; it taking half an hour. The ballot ou street superintendent resulted as follows, there being a very long wait while the votes were being counted on tho stage: Thos. Logan, 153; Jacob Gustafson, 19G; J. T. Leasy, 49; J. A. Kinney, 11; Jno. Wirt, 8. It was nino o'clock when the vote was anneunced: no nomina tion. J. T. Leasy withdrew in fa vor of Thos. Logan. Motion that the resolution passed previously be withdrawn; passed: motion that the candidate receiving highest number of votes bo declared the nom inee; carried. John Wirt and J. A. Kinney withdrew in favor of Thomas Logan. The second ballot was an nounced at 9:45, the vote being: Gns tafson, 242; Logan, 219; Gustafson's majority, 23. Nominations for chief of police be ing next in order, the natnes of II. A. Smith, Martin Carlson, A. V. Pendle ton and W. P. Whitcomb were placed in nomination. Voting went on as before, beginning at 10:10, and clos ing at , when the following re sult was auneunced: H. A- Smith, 2S1; Martin Carlson, 70; W. H. Whit comb, 37; A. V. Pendleton, 1G; Smith's majority over all, 115. Nominations for auditor and police judge began at eleven o'clock; tho following were placed in nominatien: Geo. H. Rowe, Wm. Pohl, R. L. Boyle, E. H. Brodie; the vote now thinued out a little, aud by 11:45 the tired judges and clerks were able to give the result of tho vote as follews: Boyle, 114; Pohl, 107; Rowe, 97, Brodie, 1. R. L. Boyle wjis declared tho nominee. For city attorney Geo Noland re ceived tho unanimous nomination by acclamation; in tho same way, John P. Dickinson received the unanimous ! nomination for city assessor; Jo'in i F. McGovern for city treasnrer ro-1 ceived the unanimous nominal nu; N. D. Raymond, for city surveyor, H. A. Snow, for harbor master. For councilman from the first ward, councilman Bergman, the pres ent president of the council, received the unanimous nomination, and from the second ward F. R. Stokes re ceived the unanimous nomination for councilman. It was now midnight, aud but few remaining, chairman Kinney said that a central committee was next in order, and the following were chesen: Dr. Alfred Kinney, W. G. Ross, C. J. Trenchard and R. L. Boyle. Judge Page, the nomiuee for may or, was then called and made a brief speech. He was followed by Messrs. Boyle, Noland, Smith, Gustafson, Bergman, Dickinson and Curtis.
