LOOK
Having just completed the opening of our useful as well as qui ornamental, our plain as well as our
decorated ware, we are now prepared for the trade in all its branches Buying our goods direct from
the manufacturers, and always paying cash for them, we not only get them at regular trade prices, as
cheap as San Francisco or Portland dealers can buy, but we also get the cash disceunt: and if any other
dealer thinks he can undersell us. he has only to start in, and we will agree that "the longest pole shall
knock down the persimmons." We guarantee our patrons that for quality and quantity our prices shall be
than any other house in town. Our sales of Christmas goods have been large, for which we return thanks
to our customers, but we still have a full and varied stock of as unique and beautiful goods as can be
found in town, and as we have said relative to other goods, we will not be undersold.
The expressions of admiration and satisfaction that have been made by those that have examined or
bought from us have been gratifying and assure us that our efforts to please the Astoria public are ap
preciated. We shall continue as in the past to try and merit the generous patronage bestowed upon us.
Call and see our Dinner Sets, Tea Sets, Toilet Sets, in great variety, Crystal Ware of all kinds.
Lamps, either hanging, stand, or hall in large stock, and in short, anything you want to buy.
Remember also that we are still in the grocery and provision trade and are ready to supply you with
anything you want in those lines as cheap as the same quality of goods can.be sold by any other dealer.
So remember the place to buy is at

European "War Eumors.
Paris, Dec. 7. According to
private advices from Warsaw, tin
massing of Russian troops oji m
frontier is attributed to advices u
ceived by Russia of a concerted
plan by Germany and Austria for
uuited action in the event of war
by either of those powers and Rus
sia. In that contingency it was
proposed that Germany and Aus
tria should suddenly invade Rus
sian Poland and occupy "Warsaw,
by using their theater facilities for
mobilizing. In consequence of
the discovery of this project, Rus
sia resolved to compensate for her
slow power of mobilizing by im
mediate increase of her frontier
force. The movement implied no
aggression, but is purely a defen
sive precaution.
Vienna, Dec. ?. The Political
Correspondence officially denies
the report that the parties inter
ested have sent a note to Russia
in reference to the increased forca
on the frontier. The paper says
the Austrian frontier guards will
be completely organized and their
numbers increased.
Vienna, Dec. 7. Emperor
Francis Joseph will be present at
the military council, which is to be
held at the palace to-morrow, for
the purpose of considering what
steps are necessary ia view of the
collection of Russian troops, on
the frontier.
Berlin, Dec. 7. The National
Gazette discussing the Vienna
FremdenblaWs article relative to
the massing of troops on the Rus
sian frontier, says: "It is evident
that the force of Russian troops
now in Poland is not sufficient to
attack two military powers. The
present massing of troops is too
small lor war and too large lor
peace. We must wait and see
how Russia will reconcile herself
with the pacific assurances of the
Journal de St. Petersburg.
The Moscow Gazette says the
future policy of France will decide
whether Germany will be compelled
to watch one or both frontiers.
The paper declares that Russia
must always have a strong fleet in
the Pacific ocean.

IBeet Sugar at Two Gents a Pound.
We have .some interesting fig
ures from Germany, showing at
what price" sugar is now being
manufactured in sixty-four first
class factories, as reported by the
association of Oderbruch and
Poraerania. To think that it is
possible by existing improved ap
pliances to extract 11. ol per cent,
sugar from the beet, and an addi
tional 0.G5 per cent, from the mo
lasses, or a total of 11.90 pounds
per 100 pounds of beets, is calcu
lated to cause a thrill of satisfac
tion in the breasts of Ameri
cans who contend for the best
welfare of their country. The
cost of thi9 sugar was only
two cents per pound. These,
however, are actual facts, and
could, with very little additional
expense, be repeated in the United
States. Unlike sorghum sugar, of
an unknown future, this beet su
gar is placed on the European
market in quantities sufficient for
the entire American consumption.
AVe have only to follow the exam
ple given us, to become the mas
ters and not the slaves of the
world's sugar trade. "Why these
great opportunities are neglected
remains a mystery to those who
have the country's industries truly
at heart. The Sugar Beet.
