Whitcly, who was sent to this coast in July by the fishermen smack owners of Newfoundland to examine the possible advantages that might ensue to people whom he represented by migrating from their homes in Newfoundland and Labrador to the Pacific coast, has returned from British Columbia, having completed his examination, lie says: "I visited Victoria, Van couver Island, and i hence went to every point of advantage by team er and sailing crafts. The points which 1 have selected for locations of future villages are. on (ueen Charlotte islands. The group consists of Graham, Morsel y and Provost islands. Their coast line extends about two degrees of latitude, and as there are numerous inlets that afford shelter, f consider the group a splendid place for our men. The main point that mg.iged my at tention was ;h' fishing prospects. I was fairly astounded at the quan tity of fish. The waters fairly teem with them, and although my investigations were confined to the east side of Queen Charlotte isl ands, I am informed that on their west coast fish are just as abun dant." In New York on Thanksgiving day a clothing firm gave away 1,000 overcoats to poor boys. Forty policemen were necessary to keep back the great crowd of lads that surged in billows against the big plate-glass windows. One little chap handed a floor-walker ;i dingy note, saying that the bearer was the son of a widow. "Who wrote this?" inquired the floor walker. "Me fadder,"' innocently replied the bo; but he got the coat just the same. The 1,000 overcoats melted before that army like snowflakes on an oven.
