There is a corresponding reduction to other Pacific coast points. Sometime ago there came on the Rosie Olsen from Tillamook 1,132 boxes of apples. Some hitch between the producers and the Portland pur chaser resulted in two or three at tachments being levied on the porno logical cargo upon its arrival bere, and resulted in the sale of the entire lot yesterday at public auction by con stable Beasley. R & N. Co. has promised to send a guarantee that they will perform ser vice on the night boat without extra expense to the department, and as soon as that guarantee was received and'endorsed by the general superin tendent, he will order the service, so that as soon as that is dono we will get our mail considerably ahead of the present schedule. A man who has been up and down to and from San Francisco as many times as he has fingers and toes, and been seasick each time except the las'), explains the exception as fol fel fol eows: "I took a rubber bag with me, some twelve inches long and four inohes wide, with an iron clamp to close the mouth of the bag, and filled ik with small pieces of ice every morn - 4ng (the steward brought me the ice in' a bowl), and applied it on the spine at the base of the brain, down between my shoulders, for say half to three-quarters of an hour; or rath er I lay on it, pressing it against the gpine. Fosberg, T. Bracker, H. G. Smith. The contest was on chief of police, around wnicn all tno interest cen tered: there was little or no attention paid to the presumed preference of any one of the men on any one of the tickets for mayor or councilman or any one else except chief of police. The two principal competitors on the Republican side for that office, W. J. Barry and Thos. Linville had a friendly contest for tho nomination for that office, with the result as giv on above. The first six names in the First ward delegates aud the first three names in the Second ward del egates were on both tickets. CapL Allen Noyes, who is in tho citv surveving the British ship Bryn hiida, lying at the O. B. & N. dock, and about ready for sea, has taken, for years, considerable interest iu matters relating to the loading of vessels, their depth of draught when loaded, freeboard, etc., and iu the course of his researches has found it necessary to make frequent and con tinued experiments as to the specific gravity of the water. As is well known, the water in the stream at Astoria varies, being at times absolutely fresh, and again decidedly sally. Taking the standard of fresh water at 1,000, at 60' F., a cubic foot of water weighing 62J pounds, and a cubic foot of salt water weighing 64 pounds, the spe cific gravity of the water iu the Co lumbia at Astoria at hieh tide may oo set down at 1,020. In the ocean it is nominally 1,026: that is what is what it is off Cape Hern: in the English channel it ia l,027:on Pugetsouud it is 1,023, theamonutof evaporation there being apparently in excess of tho amount of fresh water emptying into iL On tho 29th of last month, from ob servations made by Capt. Noyes at high water, ho found tho specific gravity on the surface to be 1,010: teu feet below the surface, 1,023: 15 feet below, 1,026, and 21 feet below, 1,027, the deeper, colder aud denser water being more saline. At half tide, in vestigation showed a specific gravity of 1,010 on the surface, 1.013 ten feet below, 1,011 sixteen feet below, and 1.026 twenty-two feet below. At qnarter flood, 1,094 on lho surface, 1,00S ten feel below. Comparison of the last two with the former illustrates tho increased salti ness of tho water at high tide. From May till September the water ia scarcely brackish at any stage of the tide, the mighty volume of fresh water from the Columbia sweeping back the sally tide of ocean water. Accurate knowledge of the specific gravity of the water in which a vessel it being loaded is necessary to deter mine the exact dranght of the vessel when loaded and at sea. From carefnl computation it h de duced thai at tho normal condition of the specific gravity of the water in the harbor, a vessel drawing in tho river, say, 21 feel 5 in. forward, and 21 feet 6 in. aft, will draw just 21 feet outside the bar. First Shipment of Palp. On the O. R & N. dock, yesterday afternoon, Ai. Gate3 pointed out n pile of stuff that looked a good deal like strawboard. It was the first shipment of pulp from the Young's Biver Falls pulp mill, awaiting the arrival of the Geo. 17. Elder, for car riage to San Francisco, where it will be torn up and 'shredded and made into paper. It is a dry whity brown substance, flat and fibrous, and in sheets the thickness of the cover of a book. A piece of it can be seen at The Astorian office It is made from spruce, and with a little more manipulation is capable of con version into paper the color and con sistency of that which tho reader hereof is holding in his or her lily whito hand. Mr. Elbon, who runs the business, sa3s he has splendid water power. He only uses 300 horso power, and the falls is capable of fnrnishing 2,000 horse power right along. It is within tho realms of probability that some day the eutire process will be gone through with and paper lx p. of the products of Clatsop count v But as a new and profitable prodw r( the pulp mill is a success. This gives a total of 17,750,000 feet to Willapa ana its tributaries, and does not include the output of Ihe camps which have been recently started. Among the lntter are tho camps of Soule & Woodard. Thos. Lnsk, Chapman, Sonlo and Couley, all on main river. This is a big showiug for the north part of the county in this important industry. Hi;;h I.oat a Empire.
