m "She gattjf $foffcm. ASTORIA. OREGON: HUNDAY.. DECEMRFK 4. 1887 The experience of president Grevy confirms the Alta in the belief that great men should omit being parents. Most people will answer "yes" to this query of the New York corre spondent of the Boston Advertiser: "Would it not be queer if the next president of the United States were to be Eoscoe Conklxng?" Abohdishop Heiss, of Milwaukee, says that of the 8,000,000 Eoman Cath olics of the United States, 3,000,000 are Germans. Of the eleven archbish ops and sixty bishops only one arah bishop. Dr. Heiss himself, and eleven bishops are Germans. -.1.. 1 1 -.i. Marshall P. WriiDEB's latest hit is the toast which the Irishman drank to the Englishman; "Here's to you as good as you are and here's to me as bad as I am, but as good as you are and as bad as I am, Pm as good as you are as bad as I am. People are coming into Oregon at the rate of a hundred a day. Fewer of them are coming this way than is justified by our situation and advant ages. The eastern and northern part of Pacific county is filling up faster proportionately than Clatsop, and where a few yeara ago was an unbro ken wilderness is now habited by over one hundred families. Congress meets to-morrow. The president's message will be first in or der. It would, if printed, take 22 columns of The Astobiax. There was a demand in some quarters that the message bo abbreviated. How would this suit the abbreviators "Senators and Gentlemen: Having read the newspapers, you know what the country needs. Go to work. G.C. "Neveb in the history of overland travel," writes a western correspond ent of the New York Tribune, "has there been such a blockade of freight on all lines as at present The Cen tral Pacific is two weeks behind in freight shipments. The Southern Pa cific has fully one month's freight side-tracked at various points, owing to. disastrous washouts in Arizona and New Mexico, but the Atchison road is in the worst dilemma. The extraor dinary rush of people to southern California has completely paralyzed this line. They are using every loco motive to transport passengers, and freight is thus tied up all along the line. The Atchison company is feed ing hundreds of passengers at Kansas City until they can get seat3 on a west bound train. As a rule it requires three days at Kansas City before ac commodations can be secured by those ' who have tickets there." i "At tie coming convention of the national butter, egg and cheese asso ciation the members will endeavor to provide some measures-by which eggs shall be sold everywhere by the pound instead of by the dozen. It seems strange that this was not done long ago, for it is so just and fair all around that it commends itself to everybody. While to some it may appear a very small thing, it is really very impor tant and involves a great deal of money." Yes, that's so, and yet it is safe to prophecy that when the ques tion of weight or count of eggs will be discussed at the coming convention, the reasons for count will be found to overbalance the reasons for weight, and it is more than likely no conclusion will bo ar rived at So long as human nature is as it is, the consumer demanding down weight every time, no retailer wold stand any show whatever. A customer comes in, asks for a pound of eggs; the seller puts eight eggs in the scales and they weigh 14 or 15 ounces. Nobody wants to take fifteen ounces for a pound, so demands an other egg, which will make them 16 or 17 ounces and so it goes. Scooped the Esteemed Contemporaries. Gav Magee, city editor of the Times, is one of the landmarks of the Chicago press. A long time ago, before there were any telephones or patrol wagons or boxes, when reporters had to hoof it be tween stations for the police news of the night. Magee was a night reporter for one of the morning papers. Scoops counted in those days, and when a night man couldn't turn'in one or two to bis credit in as many weeks he was trans ferred. One morning, after the last batch of night items had been sent in, Magee was homeward bound when he discovered the dead body of a man in the street. He knew it was too late to get the item in the paper, and he know if he informed the police of his discovery that the afternoon paper would have the lead on the item. In those days Chicago abounded m plank sidewalks of the most miserable kind. Magee tore np one or two of the planks in the walk near by, and planted his dead man under them. Late in the day, when he came down to his work, be notified the coroner and the afternoon papers were beaten. All the patent medicines advertised In this paper, together with the choicest Eerfumery, and toilet articles, etc-can e bought at the lowest prices, at J. W. Conn's drug store, opposite Occident total After!. RIVERS AND HARBORS. Washington, Dec. 2. Representa tive Hermann, of Oregon.says that in view of the speaker's decision at the opening of the last session of con gress, declining to give Oregon a place on the committee on rivers and harbors, because senator Dolph was a member of the committee in the senate which had charge of the river andharbor bill, he would not come in rivalry with any member of the California delegation for a place on that committee, but wonld claim to to the speaker that the Pacific cojst is entitled to two members, because of the great i tretch of sea coast and many important rivers and harbors along its line. He thinks that the Pacific northwest should be represent ed on the committee, in addition to California, and make his contest for a position on the committee on this ground. He proposes to see the speaker at once and present the claim of Oregon in that way. All the members of the delegation except Biggs are after a place ou the committee on rivers and harbors. Mr. Felton presented his claim to speaker Carlisle yesterdaj. Mr. Thompson and Mr. Vandever will urge their wishes before congress con venes. Mr. Biggu desires to be placed on the committee on agriculture, and in all probability his wishes will be granted. In the senate, Stanford would like to be on the committee on commerce, but Tones of Nevada, and Dolph of Oregon, are on that committee and neither of them desires to give up bis place. Stanford will be chaii man of the committee on public buildings and grounds, which will have the San Francisco postoffice site bill in charge. HooVtd-Jiosed Salmon ia the Trnciee. Fish Commissioner Sherwood came down from Truckee this morning, where be has been inspecting the lish ladders in Truckee river. He says the six ladders in tnat stream are now in good condition. Commissioner Sherwood brought down with him a 12-pound hooked-nosed sal mon, caught in the Truckee river. It is the first iish of the kind ever caught in the stream and is a great cnriosit3. The fish has a snout shaped like a hook, and by which the specimen of the finny tribe can be suspended. Sacramento Bee. KOU.V. In Astoria, at the Occident, Dec :J, 1887, In the wife of T. The War Papers and the Life of Lincoln increased its monthly edition by 100,000. The latter history having recounted the events of Lincoln's early years, and given the necessary sur vey of the political condition of the country, reaches a new period, with which his secretaries were most inti mately acquainted. Under the caption Lincoln in the War, the writers now enter on the more im portant part of their narrative, viz.: the early years of the War and President Lincoln's part therein. Supplementary War Papers, following the "battle series" by distin guished generals, will describe interest ing features of armv life. tunaelin from Libby Prison, narratives of personal ad venture, etc. lieneral bherman will write on "The Grand Strategy of the War." Kennan on Siberia. Except the Life of Lincoln and the War Articles, do more important series has ever been undertaken by The Cextuby than this of Mr. Kennan's. With the previous preparation of four years' travel and study in Itussia and Siberia, the author undertook a journey of 15.000 miles for the special investigation here required. An introduction from the Rus sian Minister of the Interior admitted him to the principal mines and prisons, where he became acquainted with some tnree nundred btate exiles Iiiberals, Ni hilists, and others and the series will be u startling as well as accurate revelation of the exile system. The manv illustra tions by the artist and photographer, Mr. George A. Frost, who accompanied the author, will add greatly to the value of ice urucies. A Novel by Eggleston with illustrations will run through the vear. Shorter iiovals will follow hr Pnfiia and Stockton. Shorter fictions will ap pear every moniu. Miscellaneous Features will comprise several illustrated articles on Ireland, by Charles De Kay; papers touching the field of the Sunday-School Lessons, illustrated by E. L. Wilson; wild Western life, by Theodore Boose volt; the English Cathedrals, by Mrs. van Rensselaer, with illustrations by Pennell; Dr. Buckley's valuable papers on Dreams, Spiritualism, and Clairvoy ance; essays in criticism, art. travel, and biography; peems: cartoons; etc. By a special offer the numbers for the past year (containing the Lincoln his tory) may bo secured with the vear's sub scription from November, 18S7, twentv four issues in all, for 6.00, or, with the last year's numbers handsomely bound, $7.50. ALLEN & LE WIS, AjE, FottlB-ldjXgT.ZViT. nrs "lordship sib rogeb. f5. xue most re- fei markable trial, perhaps, of modern times will be long re membered, andtherearenot a few people in England, as well as in this country, who believe tbat the claimant for the Tich borne estate, in that country, was none other than the cenaine Sir .Roger. There were manv things brought out in the almost fearful cross-examination to which he was subjected, and the public inquisition through which he passed in so manv varied forms of surveillance, which seemed to point unmistakably to the genuineness of his claim, and there is still very great symathy for him felt and expressed. Added to his most adventurous career before the trial, it has been scarcely less so since his defeat. He has met with many misfortunes, but none so serious as the one of which he writes in the following communication, which happily was arrested in the man ner which he describes. It will be ob served by his signature that he still holds on to the peculiarities of writing his name which called for a good deal of questioning during the trial, and, as it is for reasons best known to himself that he does so there is no reason for criticising it. One of the strong traita which won iiim so many friends and admirers was the pertinacity and good sense with which he held on to what he considered right and just, and there Li a clear manifestation of this spirit of truth fulness in the letter quoted below. It is outsioken and free from any shadow of dkguise, while it describes how readily he was relieved and spared the continu ance of perhaps a fatal malady: "115 Fourth avenue, New York, February 22, 1S37.
