SOME FIGURES.
Complete and official returns from
tho Boveral counties of the state show
that at the election on tho 8th of last
month there -were cast 47,931 votes,
about 80 per cent of tho voters in tho
state. Of theso 47,931, 19,973 voted
for the prohibition amendment to the
constitution, and 27,938 voted against
it, an adverse majority of 7,985: of the
vote, 41.7 was for the amendment:
58.3 per cent was against it
Baker county cast 1,119 vote3, 3S9
for and 730 against: G5 per cent of the
vote against and 33 per cent for;
Banton county, 1,604 vetes: 880 for,
724 against: 55 per cent for, 45 per
cent against: Clackamas, 2,088 vttes:
849, or 40 per cent, fer: 1,239, or 60
per cent, against: Clatsop, 1,569 vetes:
463, or 30 per cent, fer: 1,101, or 70
per cent, against: Columbia, 542: for,
186, or 34 per cent: against 336, or 66
per cent: Coos, 1,213: for, 56 per cent,
679; against 44 per cent, 534: Crook,
611: for, 72 per cent, 439: against, 28
per cent, 172: Curry, 249: for, 129, 52
per cent: against, 120, 48 per cent
Douglas cast 1,957 vetes: 54.5 per
oent, or 1,067 votes, were cast against,
and 890, or 45.5 per cent, were cast for
the prohibition amendment: Gilliam

In Polk 1,286 votes were cast; 60
p9r cent, 739 for; 40 per cent, 517
against; Tillamook cast 604 votes, for,

cent, 346; Umatilla, 2,412; for, 55 per
cent, 1,331; against, 43 per cent, 1,081;
Union, 1,671; for, 45.5 per cent, 739;
against, 54.5 per cent, 912; "Wallowa,
471: for, 52 per cent, 245; against 48
per cent, 226; Wasco, 2,050; for, 39
percent, 790; against, 61 per cent,
.1,260: Washington, 1,593, for, 42 per
cent, 675; against, 58 per cent, 918;
Yamhill, 2,257; for, 52.3 per cent, 1,
180; against, 47.7 per cent, 1,077.
Multnomah polled the biggest ma
jority against, and the biggest adverse
percentage; Josephine's percentage
against was 75 and Clatsop and Jack
son each 70. Linn gave the biggest
majority for tho amendment and
Crook the biggest percentage.
Outside of the counties of Multno
mah, Jackson, Clatsop, Marion and
Wasco, in which are the cities of Port
land, Astoria, East Portland, Sa
lem, Jacksonville and Tho Dalles, the
voto was just even.
Tho voto on tho proposed salary
amendment was beaten out of sight,
but 5,993 being cast for it, to 29,635
against
Tho voto on tho change of eleotion
from June to November, which was
tho least objectionable of the three,
was beaten by a narrow majority, 19,
917 for it, and 22,760 against it A
littlo advocacy on the part of the news
papers of tho state would have carried
it easily, but it was almost lost sight
of in the overshadowing presenco of
the question of the first of the three
constitutional amendments proposed.
TnE existence of a large treasury
surplus has bred a vastdeal of demor
alization in the country, but tho sad
dest consequence of all has been the
rise and growth of the idea that patri
otism, aside from wounds or disability,
must bo compensated by money. The
self-respecting soldier does not admit
that the service he gave his country,
the exposure of his life and tho sacri
fice of perhaps his best years in tho
great historic struggle, can or ought
to be compensated in dollars and
cents. But tho self-respecting soldier
is seldom or never heard from in the
pension combat He attends to
his own business and leaves all
the talking to the demagogues.
The latter have made two great dis dis
eoveries: First, that there is a sur
plus in the treasury which congress is
reluctant to diminish by a reduction
of taxes, and second, that congress
men are afraid of the "soldier vote."
These two factors are the most dan
gerous elements in the political situa
tion to-day. They point to an-eraof
unmeasured spoliation of the treasu
ryand worse than that, a debasement
of the grandest chapter of our nation
al history into an indiscriminate rush
tor money.
Me. Atkinson has estimated that
4180,000,000 have ben lowed on
western farm mortgages and that the
number of outstanding mortgages is
81,000. His returns from a great many
quarters show that tho rate of interest
has declined from 10 per centto63 and
7 per cent, and that the present
condition of tho farmers indicates
widespread and almost universal pros
perity. MekejltoiiIS is becoming a very
important manufacturing center in
tho northwest Among tho industries
are boots and shoes, clothing, paper,
glass, brick, loathor and all kinds of
planing-mill work. Tho reason is
that power is cheap, and the sur
rounding country is being built up
very rapidly. The flour and lumber
industries foot up 840,000,000 per year.

It is reported that ex-governor
Kirkwood, of Iowa, voted for the Dem
ocratic candidate for governor at the
late election, and that a large number
of Bepublicans followed his examplo.

How Portland Looks at the Besult.
California and more especially San
Francisco DroDi:e to celebrate t!i com-

lor. Portland and Oregon i asked to
join hands in this celebration and of
course they will comply with the re
quest but there is a noticeable lack of
enthusiasm, except among a few Mnall
fry speakers and lovers of cc lebrations
generally. The rail line beiuj; built
purely as a matter of business, will no
doubt be operated so as to pay dividends,
although the present owners have a
reputation for liberal treatment and for
building up sections of country they in
vade. This manner of oierating is
against early per cent,, but tells in the
long run. Of course wc shall celebrate,
but we have had that last spike driven
so oiten that it is getting to be an old
story. We will ive the Californians
some kind of a reception, :hnv them
how we get along in the rainy season
and what splendid crops are grown.
Everything done should be In the way
of ousiness, for it is business the Calt
fornians are after. They expect to in
vade some of Portland's territory and
they will make every effort tocaptuie
the southern Oregon trade. That they
will get some of It theie is no question,
for they will take surplus products in
exchange. Tride will go where it can
do best and it is believed our merrhanta
are alive to the situation and in need of
no considerable amount of advice. San
Francisco gloried in the completion of
the Northern Pacific in 1883, but the
immediate benefits were all but noth
ing. We then celebrated hugely for
three days and extravagantly. As an
eastern connection ihe C. & O.cuts only
an indirect figure and will probably be
used more as a club than otherwise. It
will have a large passenger business
the year round and good local ireights.
With its territory populated to an ex
tent that is possible and branch roads
built, the company would havo a wealth
of business. Conld the river channel
between Portland to the mouth of the
C lumbia be deepened so that vessels
could load here to '21 feet Portland and
the whole of Oregon and almost all of
Washington could affoid to pay for a
celebration lasting a full month. Brass
bands and receptions arc well enough
in their way, but cheap freights go to
make better markets lor wheat. Ore
