I have just received the follow ing letter from the manager of H iwl &, Snort's Mihty Allied cir cus nd menagerie, which recently went into winter quarters in 2s'ev Je m': "Yours is at hand and I gladly reply. 1 am pleased lo know that uu intend wntin a book on the subject of 'The Circus and Othtr Noxious Institutions,' and I cheer fully give you all the information in my power concerning our past season. "We were somewhat unfortunate in several things, one of them be ing our elephant. Not knowing the feeling of the public on ele phants this summer, we started out with a milk-white sacred ele phant from interior India, captured at the usual great expense and ap palling sacrifice of human life. We had ouly reached Johnson's creek, O., when the white-wash began to flake and rub off, which necessi tated the application ot two coats of white paint, at considerable ex pense. This weather-cracked and blistered some, and when we reached Poseyville, Ind., the pub lic was wild for a black elephant, and it took three coats oi dark paint, applied at some expense, but fortunately no loss of life, to please 'em. When we reached Illinois, I found by keeping my finger on the public pulse, that it wanted a trick elephant, and ours was accordingly trained to stand on a barrel and kick at the clown. uThe paint was allowed to come off gradually and when we had reached the Mississippi liver our elephant showed several square yards of black, considerable white, besides a number of spots of sim ple elephant. "Our orang-outang left us at Keokuk, la., going to work on a new brick-livery stable at that place, carrying the hod. This forced me to put on his skin and grab the bars of the cage and howl for three hours per day myself. lOur mermaid was struck by lightning at Paris, Mo., and the sheet-item ripped down the back. are for this Gla GOPBS Lit L Li TJKJLS the year; the ildren should re ir children; wh ves are sure t theart and frie that are always otten as goods, and our Harry g the latest patterns, and choi made in Astoria, as we shall NG DAY of which due not "Our lion wont on a strike earh in ;he .-eion and and refused to i ar. Tiiis made it necessary foi the secretary, after he got through selling tickets, to get down behind the cage and roar for him, whilt a canvasman pried the furious beast's mouth open with a picket. This was satisfactory to the public, nut the treasurer's throat was badly calloused. "An inquisitive old gentleman at Atchison, Kas., punched off the hump of our sacred cow with an umbrella, and the audience used it for a football, completely ruining it. The buffalo in o:ir "Wild West show about the same time got so it would not run for the cowboys, and the ring master was obliged to go a head of it with an ear of corn. I soon after traded with a man from Hay creek town ship fur a buffalo with a little more spirit. 'During the seison we gave 250 performances; lied about the next performance 259 limes; num ber of spectators shot by cowboys, 19; number of cowboys injured by falling from horses, 10; number of men who attempted to ride trick mule in Missouri, 27; m all other states, 1. "We escaped without paying our license twelve times; the zebra was restriped four times; the clown attempted a new joke one time, which was met with uroans and eggs. Number of questions asked by spectators, Gi, 000,000; number of answers given, 4 ; number of answers understood, 0. The proprietors made disre spectful remarks concerning the interstate commerce law 875,000. One hundred and thirty thousand tickets were sold, 12,S00 compli mentaries issued and 118 Kansas men passed in on account of bring ing hay for the elephant. Num ber of small boys who paid, 3i; number who crawled under the tent, 138.274. Number of Iowa men who had spotted horses they wished to sell, 1,7U0. "We have gone into winter quarters here and now have our agents ransacking th known earth for curiosities. Nothing is purchased which is not warranted to howl all summer, as the treas urer and myse f do not feel that we could in justice to ourselves or the public again undertake to con- d Time time of happy member their enhusbands o do their nd re-with G. Potts, the bareback rider, and M Skinner, the human snake, are eng-ijied with a grand double im proved 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' com pany, ejeh representing Uncle Tom, Sig. Potts dying at the right of the stage in the last act as u ual, and subsequently appearing to the audience on the celestial shore, while M. Skinner recovers on the left and dances a double shuffle and retires undercover of a cloud of dust. "I think I may safely say that the prospect for next 3 ear is vpry fl.itterinir. Wc are having our bills printed with three new colors added, and will have a patent trumpet arrangement attached to the mouth of the man who sells tickets for the side show, which will double the strength of hts yell. We are hound to please the public." A Chronic Tendency Overcome. M.iny persons are overcome with a chron ic tendency tn constipation. Thev arc of bilious temperament.
