The astokiax guarantees to Its adTer tisers the largest circulation of any newspa per published on the Columb'a nrer. Skating at tho rink to-night. Ilwaso talks of organizing a militia company. Tub Weekly Asxobian ia published this morning. The daily mail service has been ex tended from Montesano to Hoquiam. The Baker's bay trap men will have a meeting at Ilwaoo this afternoon, to organize. A silver collar button picked up at the Telephone fire, awaits an owner at this office. A subscription of $259 by A. Booth is the latest addition to the railroad subsidy f and. The prohibition vote in the affirma tive included just one-third of the vo ters of the state. The Gen. Miles went to Tillamook yesterday noen: the Dolphin goes to Gray's harbor to-day. Tur'ieys and geese were about equally divided on Astoria Thanks giving dinner tables. San Francisco and Sacramento are going to celebrate the completion of the railroad next month. Nearly all the fishermen have re turned who been engaged at the dif ferent outside canneries this fall. Members Western Amateur band meet at seven, sharp, this evening for practice. Fines for non-attendance strictly enforced. In the police court yesterday Frank Green forfeited 810 bail deposited the day before on a charge of shooting inside the city limits. During the month of October there went eastward from San Francisco over the Southern Pacific road 1,557, 950 lbs canned salmon. The Columbia arrived from San Francisco yesterday; the Oregon sails to-day. The Charlotte Croom crossed out yesterday afternoon. A church in Portland, o n South First street, is the only church west of the Rocky mountains which has incandescent electric lights. But three days from Astoria to St Paul ! That is annihilating time and distance in comparison with the years when it was a three months' trip. In the probable event of a munici pal election on the 11th prox., city auditor Jewett is busy making out polling books for the voting pre cincts. t ii Reserved seats for tho Monte Cris to performance at the New York Nov elty store at ten o'clook this morning. The sale closes at G:30 Monday evening. The British ships Androsa and Qlencairn cleared yesterday, the for mer with 114,474 bus. wheat, worth 878,973, and the latter with 83,480 bus. wheat, worth 5S,G08. C. H. Cooper has just reoeived 300 pairs of Hanan & Son's men's fine shoes in hand sewed, machine sewed and cork sole. He is sole agent for Astoria for these fine goods. A petition is in circulation and nu merously signed by taxpayers asking that the salaries of the lady teachers in the public school for district No. One be raised ten dollars per month. i The Portland papers say "Monte Cristo" drew large audiences in that city, and that the audiences were much slewed with Mr. Horace Lew is'g preceatation of that famous char acter. The suit against Muckle Bros., of St Helens, resulted in a verdict for the government of $253. The Mist thinks that the difference between $259 and 3100,000 represents the gall of the special agent who instituted the proceedings. The Androsa and Qlencairn that cleared yesterday crossed out to sea in the afternoon. That speaks vol umes for the Columbia bar: deep sea Teasels clear with large grain eargoes and cross out on their way to their home port without an hour's deten tion. Paoific Lodge, No. 17, K. of P., elected the following officers last eve ning for the ensuing term: C. 0., J. W. Hare; V. C, Ed. Hallock; P., C. W. Fox; K. of R, and S., W. A. Sher man; M. of T., J. H. Johansen; M. of Ex., J. C. Clinton; M. at H., W. W. Belcher; trustee, 3 years, J. W. Hare. The board of directors of the Asto tia street railway company met and or ganized yesterday evening, with the following efficers: president, J. W. Conn; vice president, W. A. Sherman; treasurer, F. B. Stokes; secretary, F. W. NewelL Lumber, iron, and other material has been contracted for, and the intention is to begin work as soon b practicable, probably nbout the first of next month. Under an act passed in 1882 the state of Oregon has been endeavoring to collect from the general govern ment money to reimbarse it for ex penses incurred in raising troop3 in 1862 for the late war. It has been fonnd that the act in question is not sufficient, and special legislation will be necessar5. Senator Dolph will probably introduce a bill for tho pur pose soon after the meeting of con gress. Elijah Smith has resigned the pres idency of the Oregon & Transconti nental company, and Sidney Dillon has been chosen as his successor. It has been known for some time that radical changes in the management of the Oregon companies wero about to lip made, and the return of Henry Villard to the control of the North ern Pacific, at the recent election, was merely the prelude to his further restoration.- The present Pacific county mail fa cilities, or lack of mail facilities, illus trates what a fine thing "economy" is. The government is so "econom ical" that the government contractor is not carrying tho mail, and the Oysterville postmaster can't get any one to take hold of the temporary service authorized at the miserable figures offered. In the meantime the business interests of Astoria and vi cinity suffer, and there seems to be no redress. Now that we have a night boat it seems to The Astomax that it should carry the mail. The matter can eas ily be arranged: it will be a big con venience to Astoria merchants to get their letters nearly twelve hours in advance of the present time, and place us that much nearer the east. The attention of the mail officials is urgently directed to this matter, which rests solely with them. .Let us have our through mail by the boat that arrives from Portland in the morning. Says the Pacific Jeurnal: The Bay Center Indians are dancing for a new doctor. They began the dance Monday and will keep it up for a week. It is a curious custom and as near as learned is as follews: There are several competitors for the doc torship, and tho one who dances for one week night and day without giv ing out, and succeeds in the mean time in finding some object which has been previously hidden, is the chosen man. Ho is forthwith de clared the medicine man and the heal ing business at once turned over to him. Tho doctor now on hand is about to give out aud hence the grad uation of a new man. 'Monte Cristo." 4Monte Cristo" was given at the Academy ofMusio last evening be fore an audience rather larger than is generally expected on Monday night The scenic effects were by far the best produced on this stage this sea son. Horace Lewis is of course the central figure, and from tho begin ning to the finish he thoroughly sat isfied the audience. The first scene, perhaps suited him less than any other, but as the action ol the play progresses he seems to feel the situa tions with greater force and enters into their spirit in a manner which carries the audience with him. He is the best in the strongest parti, which is frequently not the case with otherwise fair actors. He has tho best of support and he does not fail to take advantage of them. His act ing is, perhaps, the most finished of any of the cast, and made a decided hit The support generally was good, and taken altogether, "Monte Cristo" may bo put down as one of tho suc cesses of this season. Chicago Times. With a Xudcat In Itn Month. Two codfish were caught by fisher men from Yesler's wharf yesterday, weighing ten pounds each. These fish are becoming quite common in the sound waters again. One of the cods, when caught, had a mudcat in its mouth, about two-thirds swal lowed. Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 24. K. of L. Two freight trains on the B. &0. railroad collided on a sharp curve fifteen miles from this city this morning. Both trains were completely demolished, three men were killed and five others in jured. One of the killed was Wm. Haddleman, the fireman from Wheel ing. The two others are still under the debris and their names are un known. Three of the injured engi neers Gates and GofT, and fireman McGinn may die. The blame ap parently rests with the train dis patcher. THIRTEEN A IiTJOKY NUMBER. New York, Nov. 25. A verdict was rendered in favor of Lambert & Bishop in the celebrated insurance case this morning, the jury holding that tho California Insnraice com pany has no cause for action. Why te, who confessed the crime of areon, will bo arrested. In Brief, and to The Point. Dyspepsia is dreadful. Disordered liver is miser'. Indigestion is a foe to good nature. Tho human digestive apparatus is one of the most complicated and wonderful things in existence. It is easily put out of order. Greasy food, tough food, sloppy food, bad cookery, mental worry, late hours, irregular habits, and nany other things which ought not to be, have made the American people a na tion of dyspeptics. But Green's August Flower has done a wonderful work in reforming this sad business and making the American people so healthy that they can enjoy their meals and be happy. Bemember: No happiness without health. But Green's August Flower brings health and happiness to the dyspeptic. Ask your druggist for a bottle. Seventy-five cents. Real Estate Transfers. H.
