Edison's Phonograph.
Xi"w York, Nov. 18. An i-v
hibition of Edison's perfect! :.-.
noraph was given privalriv u
this city yesterday-. Edison ex
pects to have a German patent
scon. In the old phonograph the
chief deficiencies weie the impos
sibility of making an adequate im
pression upon the tin-ioi! or wax
sheet to receive the marks of the
needle point carried by the vibrat
ing diaphragm. It was necessary
to shout against the diaphragm,
and even then the resulting sounds
were mostly earicatuies of the
original. At yesterday's test the
phonograph d'stinctly read off a
page from "Nicholas Nicklesby,'
whistled ''Yankee Doodle"' and
sang uHail Columbia." In the
former test 345 words per minute
were talked into it and they
were suicessfully recorded.
This indicates its possibility
as a. substitute for the sten
ograplry. So far as the mechan
ism of the new phonograph nviy
be desctibed at present, it consists
of a cylinder which revolves upon
itself, and also has a, side move
ment governed by a vory fine
thread, so that a. fixed pencil
would trace upon the cylinder
spiral with lines almost touching".
The motive power used is an elec
tric motor devised by Edison. The
phonographs will be sold in the
shape of small cyiinders 1 inch
in diameter and from J inch to 1
inches in length. The 1 inch
phonographs will contain J00
words or what is considered quite
sufficient for an ordinary business
letter. They will cost 15 cents a
dozen, fuli size. The phonograms
of four inches in length will eon
tain from S00 to 1,000 words, ac
cording to the rate of speed of the
speaker, and will cost about HG
cents per dozen.

last July, and Is now watite'd
to claim a 035,000 fortune left
him by his father, who died near
Kansas City. The older Ensign
was formerly captain of the ship
JBluc Jacket, and left a fortune, of
?7O,000. One-half of the money
was left to the widow and tho oth
er half to the son, in the event
that he returned to his mother and
was present at the opening of the
will, which was to occur on the
5th of Fcbt u iry next. Ti the boy
did not return to claim his inherit
ance, the 35,000 was, according
to provisions of the will, to revert
to a nephew of decedent. All ef
forts to fit d young Ensign were in
vain and nothing was heard in re
gard to him until the detectives
learned that a boy answering his
description had been living with a
man named M. E. Aermason, at
Lemoore, Tulare county, this state.
Arermaon sent the officers a piece
of'a vest worn 03 the boy, who
had previously left his employ, and
the detectives then sent him a pic
ture of the missing lad. Yester
day the detectives received a dis
patch from A'ermason. saying that
the picture was that of the boy
ho had worked for him. Further
search will immediately be made.
