The United States government has at last screwed up its courage to the extent of ordering ships that shall make 19 knots an hour. This is equivalent to being about a quarter of a century behind old Spain. The Spanish navy is now in possession of a war vessel, the Iteina licgente, that sails at the rate of 21 knots per hour. Prob ably by the time our 19 knot ships are ready, Spain and other nations will have vessels that can make 25 knots. It seems to be difficult for our navy department to keep posted as to what is being done by other naval powers. "What is the use of building antiquated, slow boats, when better and more ap proved forms are already afloat that can sail around them and run them down. The Jicinu Jlcgcntc has a dis placement of 5,000 tons, 12,000 horse power, burns 1.4. pounds of coal per hour per horsepower, and has a very formidable armament. This wonderful vessel was built in 15 months' time. The fastest tor pedo boat is also in the Spanish navy. It is named the Destructor, and runs at a speed of 22 knots or over 26 milfS per hour. Spain is rapid'y regaining her ancient prestige on the sea. Span ish steamship lines are fast being extended all over the world. Splendid Spanish steamers now ply between New York, the West Indies, and Mexico. On the Pa cific the Spanish steamers are vig orously competing for the coast trade. An Able Protector. If there is a more able protector against the incursions of disease than llostettei'cs Stomach Bitters, we have jet to learn of It. Against the periodic attacks of fever and ague it affords a sure defence, it renews waning vital ty, and counteracts the Infirm ities of age ; it prevents dvpepsia from ! coming chrot Ic, and eventually annihilates it. It ! whispered around that there is n great stir among the so called society folks. It appears that they don't agree as to who is or is not admissable into "our cir cle." They ought to be mighty careful about some of the young roosters they countenance, as well as some of the hens they are so much alarmed about. The idea of discriminating against those wom en because they have been unfortu nate. Give all a show. Tucson Arizona) Star. Aver's Sarsaparilla.
